“My name? Libra or Stirling?”
“Libra. I thought most people were named after colors since the war?”
“Ah, so you must also be curious about Orion and Virgo too then?” Libra takes the girls awkward laugh as a sign that yes she had been wondering about them too. “Hmm-“ the hard wooden staff in Libras hands sweeps at the girls ankles to bowl her down, “alright then, we’ll take a little break and I’ll tell you about it.”
Since Ruby was now already on the ground, Libra joins her, sitting so she can look out over the mountains and scenery. “I know your uncle hasn’t mentioned me to you, more than a quick ‘by the way’ introduction-“
“Yeah I was-“
“I asked him not to.” Libra turns to gauge Ruby’s reaction. “Qrow and I both live dangerous lives and sometimes the less people know about them the better, even family. Anyway the reason for our names is simply because we come from a place outside the kingdoms. Caldria.”
That doesn’t seem enough explanation and Libra nods, she figured as much, “You see, Caldria wasn’t really involved with the war so much, so the idea of naming children colors in self expression didn’t really affect them. They had been doing star names for a long time before and would continue to do so.
“Old stories tell that we were named as stars so that we can serve as lights, beacons, points of hope in times where darkness covers the world. Qrow said that in his tribe children earned their names, in Caldria our names are our hopes, more accurately hopes of what we can bring to the world. My name, Libra, I was named in hopes that I could grow to become a force of balance. Orion, names so he could become great and strong, a great hunter who would fight back the monsters. Virgo, hopes for purity and grace-“
Libra snorts a laugh, “I think Cass missed the mark on that one honestly- but I digress. Sometimes we aren’t named for the constellations but their stars, my father and uncle, Castor and Pollux Stirling, twins named for stars from Gemini so they would always be together and never alone.” She humms softly, looking more at ease talking about her home than she has before.
“That doesn’t always apply though, Hunter for example. That’s more a color, and it’s not a star, but it’s a hope, maybe a curse, but that he can be strong and keep the creatures of darkness at bay. Originally I was going to name him Forrest, because that’s where I found him but Ori laughed at me.”
Ruby was in awe of the Older woman’s skill with the staff as she descended to the ground, And she remembers moments like this with her own mother both the women surely would have been great friends she thinks to herself. “I find it incredible that you found a family just by going on adventures Auntie Libra.” She was not ordinary in the least but what is normal life is but an empty canvas and it’s our job to paint the world as we see it.
The soreness of her back is something she likes the least about the training process , but knows it’s just a part of a greater whole we must keeping moving forward to become even stronger like the woman standing in front of her . It was obvious to Ruby her endless grace and sharp wit she is like the huntress outta novel’s read before even attending beacon . no wonder her Uncle Qrow fell for this woman she has this warmth that you can't help but smile at.
“You think we could go again in a minute, you got me pretty good old timer!” the young huntress gives a cheeky grin hoping that she doesn't mind the joke.
