I remember watching the behind the scenes on this show. The creator of the show said that they got so much fan mail saying this show was the most realistic hospital show.
My parents both worked in the medical profession my whole life, and when I was watching them come home, I could see echoes of what this show did. All other medical shows were so much about the drama. This one nailed it. It nailed the good, the bad, and everything in between.
Also, I read that Scrubs was more medically accurate than House, Grey’s Anatomy, and every other medical show on TV

Take Me Home, Country Roads by John Denver except it’s playing from your neighbor’s radio that you can hear from your back porch, which you sit out on to relax in spite of the loud buzzing from the lightbulb and the hoards of moths that flock to it on summer evenings like this.
This reminds me of sitting on my parents’ back porch back home while our record player is spinning inside.

Some poor nurse somehow accidentally paged every. single. resident. in our program, all ninety something of us, this afternoon to ask about her patient’s diet order.
At first I didn’t realize why she sounded so flustered when I returned the page. Then, as I listened to 8 of my colleagues call the page back over the course of the afternoon, I realized that poor woman has probably had to field 50+ phonecalls about this.
I once paged EVERY SINGLE PAGER IN THE HOSPITAL by mistake, at like 11 night, instead of the doc I wanted. The Doc is super cool and we are bros and this page said something along the lines of
“Whats the dealio with our bro with sepsis”
I eventually just quit picking up the phone

On my old ward the nurse in charge managed to trigger a major incident by test bleeping herself
I forgot the word “aneurysm” yesterday when trying to answer my attending’s question about Kawasaki disease and coronary arteries, so instead I just said “CORONARY...” and made my arms round like I was holding a beach ball while making an inflating noise with my mouth. It got a few laughs but they totally got what I was going for.
Thank the lord I’m on pediatrics right now.

Single doctor culture is…
Joking with your doctor friends about wanting to be with a rich partner so you don’t have to work silly shifts any more (but really, so you don’t have to worry about becoming baknrupt if you have to take time out for sick leave or burnout). Or wanting a house-husband/wife to do everything for you (but really so you can do your job without also having to do most of the housework, particularly if you are a woman).
But in reality having to be both of those people for yourself, because you are in charge of your own life, wherever the hell it is heading.
Single doctor culture is…
Staying past your shift whether it is to get the work done, do something a little extra mile, or to catch up with colleagues and then wondering on your late drive home whether you would be better at leaving if you had to optimize time with a significant other.
I feel this, too. Perhaps colleagues with kids or a partner are more focused on getting home in time, because the stakes are higher for them.

Trying to be honest with dates about the limitations of your work and lifestyle without sounding like a total downer.
Because the best way to attract people who accept you for you is to be the best version of yourself, but also being open about your life.

Reflecting on prior people you dated (can you even call them exes?) and second-guessing if it was the lack of spark that made you end it or was it because it was intern year and you had just come off a long stretch of nights.
Alternatively, thinking about “exes” and wondering if those incompatibilities were REALLY such dealbreakers because what’s so wrong with settling anyway…
(You have just enough free time for these thoughts. The blessing in disguise is your next shift is about to start so you’re too busy to actually go down that road.)
Single doctor culture is…
…realising it’s that much harder to date when you work unsociable hours, because sometimes you really are too busy and tired for it. But also knowing people in medicine who were dumped because “you always had to work”, and really hoping that doesn’t happen to you. Trying patiently to explain to people who clearly have all their evenings free that actually, you will probably work late, or actually, you have nights, or actually, you booked a meetup with medic friends like 3 months ago. It can be hard to explain just how difficult your timetable is, sometimes.
Also, not even knowing what is appropriate date conversation with non-medics any more. For Pete’s sake, I’ve mentioned dead bodies so many times on recent dates that it’s become an in-joke at this point.
Trying to work out if it’s better to date other doctors (but risk your timetables always clashing, and your conversation always being about work), or non-medics (and dealing with people who just don’t get how intense your life really is); and realising there is no easy answer. The right person can be either. Single doctor culture is also wishing that it’d be nice if the right person came along a little quicker, because this is exhausting, you have way too many other things to do, and there are so many people out there who are patently not it.
Single med student culture is…
trying to meet someone, while also wondering if there’s any point to dating when you will likely be moving to a different state for residency in a little over a year and unless you meet mr. right RIGHT now, knowing no one will actually follow you/make it work long distance when you haven’t been dating that long
This. Since my job involves rotating hospitals every year (usually differnt towns or at least different ends of London) and theoretically having to move to different parts of the country if you don’t get in where you want for the next step of the training. Literally having to factor in moving around and whether it’s worth getting to know someone if you’re going to have to move, and how likely they might be to actually want to keep anything going.

Don’t date men who dont do housework/chores until they’re asked.
By that I mean: it is not your responsibility alone to keep track of and manage the household labour and chores.
Do not date someone who expects you to tally and distribute tasks like they’re a child getting chores from their parents.
You should never feel like the parent nagging for chores to be done before playtime in an adult partnership.
