A Serious Topic: Emotional Abuse
Emotional abuse is hard to understand, many people might think that being emotionally abused, just means you get called bad names. That’s just the tip of the ice berg.
The symptoms of psychological (emotional) abuse:
- Feeling unnecessarily ridiculed and judged
- Feeling belittled infront of others
- Sujected to extreme displays of anger, often blown out of proportion.
- Not allowed to choose your own friends, or criticized by your choices.
- Poor sense of self-worth and self-respect
- Disturbed or prevented sleep
In some cases, the abuser may be unaware of the effect they have on you, like in the case of parents or other family members. The abuser usually fits a certain type of personality. They are often someone with control issues, and are most likely short tempered. They are verbal aggressors, who often yell, swear, and insult the victim.
Like physical and sexual abuse, emotional abuse can leave scars. Children between the ages of 4-7 who are emotionally abused, are more likely than others to develop mental illnesses, social and anxiety disorders, such as low self-esteem, paranoia, depression, etc. Emotional abuse can also turn into self-harm, in children as young as 12.
