Hi, it’s me like a week later abt the winged humanoid thing. Wondering how to keep characters being able to fly when they have different body shapes/fat distribution and if it’s possible at all for them to be fat? They are all experiments and may be getting a very regulated/samey diet. Unless being able to choose their own diet is part of the stimulation to keep them happy and from going nuts in their vast but confined facility.. I don’t know I don’t know anything about science -_-. But there’s really important people in my life who are fat, and fat people are everywhere in the real world, I want them to be represented. And making it a byproduct of like some bird or new Sci-Fi body part that looks like that human fat but isn’t, or making it just feathers feels like a cop out. I could always fall back on comic book science ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

birds carry fat mostly around the breast muscles, on either side of the keel bone. So when they get more fat, it kind of bulges with a dip in the middle of the body where the keel sits.

(image description: diagrams showing the top-down view of how birds build up fat on their breast muscles. The skinnier the bird is, the more the keel bone pokes out in the middle. The fattest bird example has a soft dip in between two large breast muscles, just barely showing where the keel bone should be. end description.)
You could combine this with a humanoid belly for a little extra fat. And of course, there’s also the crop if you want some neck fat. The crop is kind of a stomach pouch up by the throat, it’s most visible in a well fed baby bird. gets quite pudgy when it’s full.
I have now doodled one of my own bird people with some good body fat as a demonstration.
