If sexual activity between same-gender people became illegal, the police would be the ones enforcing those laws.

That's why police are not welcome at Pride. Pride is for unconditional supporters, not for those who would become enemies as soon as they're ordered to.

This take bugs me.

It’s ahistoric and misrepresents the functions of the police and pride.

Pride started as a protest against police violence. Not a “we support queer people” gathering, but a “we’re going to be loud and inconvenient and harder to kill” riot.

The police are always enemies of queer people because police are military forces that authorized and encouraged to commit violence against people in order to strengthen the state. They are fond of killing people, especially black and brown people, especially disabled people, and especially queers. As long as the police exist, queers are not safe.

The police do not simply carry out the law. The police elect to use parts of the law in order to reinforce police power. They do this strategically, with knowledge of how public sentiment will either explicitly or tacitly support their violence. They selectively enforce laws against certain populations as part of the normal operations of capitalism, both strengthening their force and helping to redistribute wealth to the wealthy. They also break laws with style, making little effort to conceal their crimes, because they have effectively convinced white people that they are necessary for their safety.

When police raided queer bars in the US, it was typically to extort money from owners and blackmail wealthy patrons. They were not acting as unwitting foot soldiers to carry out the law. Instead they were operating with knowledge that they could line their coffees and extend their power by exploiting people’s fear of being raped, murdered, and blackmailed.

When sodomy laws were struck down and public sentiment was seemingly less tolerant of homophobia, this didn’t transform the police. You’re right that the police would have more tools to kills and maim if those laws are reconstituted, but they’re killing and maiming us now. That’s what they’re supposed to do.

Another 751 unmarked graves were found at a Saskatchewan residential school.

Seven hundred fifty one.

This school, The Marieval Indian Residential School, operated from 1899 to 1997.

It was one of the last residential schools to close in Canada. One of more than 130.

In case you didn’t know, residential schools were created to “cleanse” the people of Canada. These schools operated from 1831, when the Mohawk Institute Residential School opened, to 1996, when residential schools were finally outlawed.

That is 166 years of cultural genocide.

An estimated 150 000 children attended these schools, and an estimated 6 000 children died at these schools (current records of death are incomplete)

These children were beaten, sexually abused, even experimented on. They were treated like prisoners, like they were sub-human.

A child’s likelihood of dying in a residential school was one in twenty-five. In comparison, a Canadian World War 2 soldier’s odds of dying were one in twenty-six.

I am not Indigenous. I cannot pretend to know how painful this may be. But what I can do is speak out. This inhumane treatment of citizens of Canada must be condemned.

The government of Canada, and The Catholic Church, must. make. reparations.
