狛枝凪斗の25年間

Tamadeko’s complete 123 page illustration log on Pixiv is the single most beautiful piece of fanwork for Komaeda that I’ve ever seen.

It’s called "The 25 Years of Komaeda Nagito" and as the title suggests, it follows Komaeda’s life; from beginning to end.

It does take some liberties near the middle to the end, where Komaeda and Hinata are involved romantically. But I’m absolutely positive that any fan of Komaeda will be just as affected by the bittersweet story Tamadeko has worked so hard to create. 

Words aren’t nearly enough to describe how heartrendingly gorgeous this work is, so I ask that you check it out for yourselves. It honestly took my breath away.

Hands shook violently in front of his face, vision blurred by the amount of tears running down his face. He had relapsed again, this time ruining everything he held dear to his chest. There was no reset game and there was no do-over's. There was only real life and everything he did wrong was coming to his face.

In front of him laid Kirigiri, one eye half open and blood pooled around her body, their bodies to be excat. He couldn't even tell where it was coming from, his fingers trying to grab her arm to find a pulse, to prove to himself she wasn't dead yet. Maybe if he found Tsumiki in time he could save her.

"No, no, you're going to be okay!" He tries to tell her, tell himself maybe. He isn't ready to cope with this, he thought if he relapsed again it would be like the first time. Controlled. Queit. Childish. Not murderous and violent. 

He tried to talk to her, feeling the beat in her arm go steady. How? How was this happening? This was all a dream right, looking down at himself. Blood covered his shirt and pants, hands even stained red now. He couldn't live with this.

"Kyo? Kyo...wake up! You can't die yet, not like this, please no." He tried to say, words getting lost to himself as sobs drowned out his voice.

Uncertainty clouded her mind as he finally spoke, little notches and falters in his words and her actions as she processed each one gradually. Silence blanketed it’s cold atmosphere between them, a softening of her expression to lose it’s sad smile akin to his own. Green, no hints of red texture within his eyes signalling to her that Kamukura wasn’t on the verge of re-appearing at such an inconvenient time. It was Hinata she was speaking to, no more, no less.

And like her, his pride and nature to want to be independent had forced the six month separation. Perhaps it was mildly her own fault, rushing to help him at his beck and call. Regardless of it being a part of her job, the way he worded it made it sound as though the constant help rendered him as u s e l e s s . Overly d e p e n d e n t . A t o d d l e r . And she herself was one of the main causes. Not that if she ever mentioned it, he’d allow her to think.

"But, it’s just your birthday. I’d never forget it." "I felt bad hiding from you without a full reason. I just…didn’t know how to tell you." "But Happy Birthday, I hope you still love me as much as I love you."

Weakness and hate filled her mind, only directed towards herself. She felt weak for giving in so easily, and hate for what she about to do. But at the same time, on the opposite side of the spectrum, she wanted to. Even if it was to only reaffirm her own thoughts and to settle his worries. It was an excessive measure of something she understood, and probably would have (regrettably) done in the same situation. Perhaps then, their roles would have been switched, and he’d be the one reprimanding her.

Tugging him down to her level by his tie once more, though far gentler than the previous attempt, she pressed her lips softly against his own. Slowly, her hands moved from his tie and joined each other around his neck, holding that position for just another moment before her lips finally departed from his.

Fingers pulling at his tie again, he almost put up his hands in defense of her actions. He didn't expect to feel lips pressing to his own, a sense of warmth flooding through his chest evenly as he realized shes not that mad and it made him flutter on the inside. 

Her choice to forgive him quickly was one he valued, breathing out excess air through his nose, a practice he had formed from kissing her when she came through, Six months later couldn't make him forget. But it could make him forget the way she smelled, like home. Like the way being n o r m a l  might have tasted if it could be made into a taste. Every part of her body was something that could explain how helpless he really was.

And how perfect she made him feel.

His hands found her waist, settling on them in a way that made him nervous he was going to fast for being gone for six months. But she pulled away slowly and he looked down at her. His green eyes blinking slowly, before he kissed her forehead softly.

"I would hope. Getting a boyfriend for a birthday present does seem like a pretty big deal to me." He tried to laugh a little, holding her cheeks with his hands.

"I made you a cake too...If you want that."

  — Expecting a reply from the brunet that did not come, Komaeda blinked. Honestly, Hinata was very predictable and so he expected him to brush off his comment about him not being able to ‘play’ nurse. He must have not know that if he had done it, then Komaeda might have really been the last person to see him alive. Besides, he didn’t want to see Hinata-kun’s blood. Even back at the hospital, he had turn his head every time the nurses took blood from him.

   But now he knew that it wasn’t his problem anymore. As of now, it became the real nurses’ problem. He dialed the emergency number and asked for an ambulance. "I doubt you’d want me to be the last person to see you alive, Hinata-kun." 

   Doubt. Why did he use that word? "You’ll be fine, Hinata-kun. From someone who’s spent a great part of his life in a hospital, I can assure you that they always do a remarkable job." No. Not really. Not always. They couldn’t fix him. But he was cursed. Hinata-kun wasn’t. "Huh?" he blinked, taking in consideration Hinata’s terrified face. "Or could it be you’re scared of hospitals?"

Hinata tensed up, looking like he might just run away and leave, he might just do it. He wasn't ready to go back to a hospital, a room with white sheets and the smell of antiseptic that would burn his nostrils. He went through it once and the idea of doing it again was scary. Glancing at Komeda, he chewed his lip, shaking his head.

"It'd be better than a doctor seeing me as the last person alive." He mumbles, now trying to once again hide his fear. It was better that way, maybe if he didn't act as scared he wouldn't be anymore. Maybe.

At the comment, he nodded, taking his words into consideration. The question threw him off guard though, making him turn his head in shame. "Maybe? Maybe. I just don't like them, I get..bad memories for them I guess." He mutters quietly, pushing himself up a little, before realizing that was stupid. "Help me up, I think I'm losing feeling in my leg." He adds on, loosening the knot on his thigh. He didn't return the jacket though, still keeping it near him.
