My high school has newspaper stands that just lie empty for half the month, what texts would you suggest printing out and filling them with?

Probably a zine of some sort? I’m not the best mod to ask abt this to be honest. 

Any of our followers have any suggestions?

So you can totally fill the stands with some common zines that are available at zine events. If you go to a zine event yourself you might be able to pick a few up for free because these ones are usually just given out or if you can afford it you can print them out yourself.

If you’d like to see a bigger list of zines you can print out here’s a page with a list of them and here’s another page with even more. Some of them might not be accepted in a high school stand, depending on how your school is, but I’m including it in case you’d like to check them out for yourself or if you go to zine events and want to hand them out. 

I’d also suggest looking to see if you have any zine distros near you and maybe you can see some stuff there you’d like to share. Or you could even start a zine of your own if none of this appeals to you.

Um..what happened to the salad?

okay so in egyptian mythology there’s these two gods, set and horus. set is known for kind of being a horrible dick (real chaos god hours tbh) and he and horus fight in the most ridiculous ways over who’s going to be king of the gods. at one point, this turned into a competition of ‘who can get whose jizz into the other and be declared king’ (the basic premise of this is that, if you have another dude’s jizz in you, that means he’s dominated you, you’re not king material) . SO ANYWAY this leads to set banging horus at one point, and set’s all smug because he’s like ‘oh my jizz totally got in horus’s butt, i’m gonna be the next king’ BUT horus was a sneaky sun god and caught set’s jizz in his hand and washed it away

later on, set is making himself a nice salad to munch on, and i guess when he’s got his back turned or something horus comes up and is like ‘PAYBACK TIME BITCH’ and adds his very own ranch dressing recipe to set’s salad, and i guess set is an idiot because he just chows on down like his salad doesn’t taste suspiciously of spooge

all of which leads up to the moment when set’s like ‘hey everyone guess who got his semen in horus, THIS GUY!! haha so am i king now or what.’ BUT when he calls upon his lil spermies to prove that they’re in horus’s butt, they aren’t there, because horus washed them away! and then horus is like ‘yeah bitches guess who REALLY got his jizz in who, HEY SPERM WHERE ARE YOU’ and his sperm are like ‘HEY HORUS WE’RE HERE IN SET’S STOMACH’

set whined a whole bunch about it though so finally he and horus agree on a boat race to determine who’s going to be king, except the boats are made of fucking rocks. horus kind of cheats though and brings in a wooden boat painted to look like a rock so of course he wins and for some reason set’s fine with that.

anyway the moral of the story is, cheating is wrong, especially when it comes to jizzing in somebody else, unless your name is horus in which case do whatever you want

The woman teaching our tutorials seems really nice. She did her PhD on the fluidity of sex and gender and looked at science fiction.. which sounds really interesting. Unfortunately, her terminology is still stuck in the 70s and 80s.. she uses 'female genitalia' and the whole 'born in the wrong body' discourse around transness, and she described Raewyn Connell as a 'transsexual' instead of a trans woman.. probably because Connell's work uses the term often, but Connell was writing in an age where that was the term used. She (the teacher) then went on to use 'transsexual' and 'transgender' interchangably. I find that a whole lot of academics seem to have discourse and thinking that ceased evolving when they finished their PhD.. to the extent that you could probably pick the exact moment they published from listening to them speak. I see this especially with queer theory, and especially the discourse around transness.. which seems to move and evolve at the speed of light. I also think that theory has moved away from academia and into social media, especially twitter.. which is interesting af to watch because it means that we're in a position where academics are not only no longer the elite when it comes to this stuff, but they are very much out of the loop.

A new semester means more group icebreakers..

The icebreaker question for our tutorial was 'what did you want to be when you were growing up, is this that?', and I had to go first. Me: I wanted to be a cop, because my dad is a cop.. but I've come full circle and now I'm actually a police abolitionist. I'm doing this degree because I want to get involved in activism and look at alternatives to the police force and how we can shut it down. Everyone who goes after me: I want to be a cop, I've always wanted to be a cop. The last woman in the class: I don't want to be a cop.. I want to get into juvenile justice and work with youth in detention. Me: ... *sigh*

I really want to do well in my classes this fall so  I decided to make a printable classroom information sheet that will help me (and you) stay organized and prepared for class this fall. This info sheet is ideal for a college student but it can really work for anyone.

- THE BASICS: a space for you to jot down important class info such as your professors email and his office hours (and other stuff)

- A MATERIAL LIST

- ABSENCES TRACKER: you will know exactly what you missed and what day to make up *** I got this clever idea from @ljstudies!

- KEY ASSIGNMENTS/EXAMS/FINALS: your own personal syllabus

- EXTRA CREDIT: I thought that this was a nice section to add in because sometimes we forget about some amazing opportunities that could really help us in the long run!! (I especially added this in for younger students since extra cred is more common among secondary schools)
