Worked my way through Futurama Fox era and my takeaway is that Fry chases after Leela because he subconsciously knows she is unattainable and he convinced himself he's in love with her because he doesn't know how to face his repressed gay feelings for Bender.

Fry being like "maybe I should look for love closer to home" and then turning to Leela and Amy instead of the guy who started a robot uprising because Fry didn't pay enough attention to him (selling his own child in the process) and then not only dragged an eldritch being back from another dimension to get Fry back but did the whole thing with a pirate theme to impress him. The guy whom Fry clearly missed in so called "heaven" because he immediately went behind Yvo's back to contact him. He really is the dumbest boy on earth...
