The thing was, Lambert didn’t mean to overhear anything. He tried to tune out noises (especially talking) as a general rule, because first of all a man could go insane listening to every tap and creak in the world around him, and second of all most people were really fucking boring to listen to. But sometimes something random registered. Like when you were walking down the hallway minding your own business thinking up the end to a dirty limerick, and there was a noise coming out of a closet that should be empty. And it didn’t sound like a draft or rats (the two most common noises in this crumbling shithole). In fact, it sounded like a human bard. Maybe one who knew about mutated witcher ears and was trying his best to be quiet by hiding behind four inches of wooden door—

Lambert knew he should keep walking and let Jaskier have some privacy, but something in the tone of the bard’s voice had him opening the door without making the conscious decision to.

“Crying all by yourself, songbird?”

“Oh, fuck me,” Jaskier said.

this is my worm brain talking but yennefer and jaskier are so guinevere and lancelot coded to me just… two people who are both bound to and both in love with different people but are still so hopelessly devoted to each other, lancelot feeling like he’s betraying arthur by falling in love with guinevere while still loving arthur with all his heart and being ready to fall on the sword for him, guinevere knowing that hers and arthur’s is the great love story while still falling in love with lancelot in spite of that, the shame, never being sure where you’re standing in comprising to the other, just slightly toying that line of infidelity and betrayal with a connection that was born out of pure love and understanding of the other person, the knowledge that all of this will end in pain and grief and you will not escape your destiny
