I'm typing up a new intro post now that we've gained more followers!

Basic info

My name is Angel, I'm 25, bi, and I have been obsessed with animals since I was very young

What'll you find on this blog?

All sorts of critters I happen to find in my area/reblogs about critters!

You'll also occasionally find plants and fungus and basically anything relating to nature!

I own a few trail cams and have them set up on my property so there will be a lot of posts about that too!

I also love doing critter facts, so feel free to send in an ask and I'll write up a little fact post about them!

There will occasionally be pictures of animal bones, but everything will be tagged accordingly.

Also feel free to submit facts, anything you might need an ID for, or just any neat critters you happen to spot!

What tags will you find?

To my followers who are afraid of spiders, don't worry, all bugs will be tagged with what type of bug they are and the over arching tag of "insects". This rule will also apply to snakes and the like!

All posts involving facts for an animal will be tagged as "fact post"

I do sometimes post/reblog prehistoric critters which will get the base tag of "prehistoric"

This blog will be safe for work, unless there is mention of any sort of mating/reproduction, but it'll only be in text. If there is some off chance I show an image it'll be tagged as "nsft" since tagging nsfw can get your blog flagged.

I don't tend to tag for swears, and while I usually keep my language more on the clean side, sometimes reblogs will have swears in them and I can't do much about that.

I also do like posting bones from my collection! If it's just cleaned bones I won't tag as dead animal, instead it'll be tagged as "bones". Anything that has any bits left over or not decomposed (or posts involving them) will be tagged as ”dead animal”. If I deem it as extremely graphic, I will mark it as mature, hide it under a read more, and tell you plain as day that it's a graphic image.

Asks will be tagged as "ask, answered, anon/the blog that asked the question" they will also be tagged as "not an animal post" if they don't fit the category!

If you do need anything else tagged, feel free to let me know!

Now for the DNI

This blog is a safe space for queer people, and all POC's, I will not tolerate any hate, you will be blocked immediately.

All iconless blogs, even if you post content, you will be blocked and reported. It's too difficult for me to differentiate between you and a bot, so change your icon.

A few final words

While I do usually post what the critter is, I am still only a hobbyist when it comes to plants/animals, and have been corrected before, and I'm sure I'll be corrected again.

Never ingest anything unless you've done your own research and are 100% certain on what it is. Even then I don't recommend it unless you're trained in whatever the thing is.

Never interact with/pick up any critters unless you know how to handle them. I'm not just talking about spiders and snakes, I mean everything, big and small. The only exception is if it's in immediate danger, and even then I recommend calling your local DEM or the equivalent of it depending on where you live.

And last, but certainly not least, I highly recommend checking out inaturalist! Here's a post that goes more in depth, but it's basically a site/app where you post an animal you've found and people help ID it! It also helps collect data for scientists and is even partnered with National Geographic, California Academy of Science, and the WWF!

Fishing cats are stocky, muscular nocturnal predators about twice the size of a domestic cat. Little studied and rarely seen, fishing cats lurk near the muddy shores oxbow lakes, mangrove swamps, and tidal creeks in South and South East Asia where they dine on fish and crabs (or, failing that, anything smaller than them). The fishing cat is a fast and powerful swimmer and even has webbed paws!

Sadly, fishing cats are now endangered and the global population may have declined by around 30% in the years 2010–2015. The destruction of wetlands and persecution by local farmers and fisherman have driven them to extinction in many regions.

Did you know that the Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is a beautiful insect native to parts of China and Vietnam but has invasively spread to the US, Korea, and Japan?

These voracious eaters will feast on all sorts of plants, crops and trees included, leaving a waste product that inhibits photosynthesis and they drink the sap of their host.

In their native range their numbers are kept in check by parasitic wasps but as an invasive species they are incredibly destructive and have no natural predators.

It is important to report sightings to a local agency to help preserve our local ecosystems.

Yeah it could be one of those services (rangers or forestry), could be a nearby university, or you could reach out to the city/regional governments who should also have some sort of division or at least contacts that can help.

Hello all, an unfortunate update with life

So my dad is dying of lung cancer, and essentially his dying wish to me was to take in his two cats. I said yes, because of course he has no one else and I'm not letting them go to a pound.

Problem is I already have five (about to be six) cats and two dogs and unless we can finish the basement before my dad passes I don't know how we can handle 8 cats.

I want to say it would be easy but the house is old and a lot of the basement needs rewiring and we just don't have the money to do it quickly

As a kid you see seahorses in cartoons as actual underwater horses for the fish people to ride on and it makes u never really realize how fucking weird seahorses actually are. Forget the horse part and just look at this fish. It’s a serpentine type fish like an eel, with a tube shaped body, but it’s stuck in a stiff C shape and can mostly only articulate its head and tail. So it swims standing upright. With its weird tiny hummingbird fins. Is this weird to anyone else

it's also kind of hard to get until you see it but they are literally just barely wrapped around their skeletons. there is no extra meat there.

a tiny bony as hell animal with a prehensile tail that is incapable of swimming like other fish (so they cling to seaweed and coral). they can do mpreg. some of them are ambush predators. nobody does this like them

If you read ecology books printed in the 70s and 80s, they were absolutely convinced that whales and tigers would not survive the century. There's a whole plot in Star Trek about how whales are extinct actually. Here in Argentina, we were sure that yaguaretés would have gone extinct. It was thought that rainforests would be forever lost, because there was no way that such complex ecosystems would be restored.

Now, you can go to Península Valdés and find that the whale population there is growing year after year, people can see them from their windows. In Iberá, where yaguaretés were extinct for over 70 years, there's now a population of 35 and growing, after being reintroduced just five years ago. As for rainforests?

We've becoming very, very good on restoring them. Natural environments, when given space and time to heal, can return to that they were. And after all, all natural enviroments are managed by human societies. It is up to us to implement a good management, un buen gobierno.

I firmly believe our children and grandchildren will see a restoration of Earth like never before.

Millions of people are working on this. You can learn about it, perhaps even become one of them. Or be a pointless doomer in my ask box. Your choice.
