“Andrew Hussie is sexist/ableist/etc”
I just know I’m going to get hate for this but here’s my oPINION
Ok consider this, Andrew Hussie is writing a story.
He’s writing a comic, a piece of fiction, not meant to be taken seriously. Mituna has a form of mental illness, Meulin is deaf, etc yes we get it he has introduced characters with disabilities. This is not a problem. He is not, in any way, saying that these people are laughable. “Haha, Mituna has mental retardation, let’s laugh at him!”. No. Mituna is Mituna. Mituna does not stand for every person with mental retardation, he stands for Mituna. That’s like saying that if Andrew released a canonically black character, that character would automatically stand for black people everywhere and Andrew’s opinion on them. This is not the case. Mituna is one character and one character is all he represents.
Cronus is a bully to him. Not because he’s mentally unstable, but because Cronus is Cronus. The point of his character is exactly that, a bully. He is not Andrew’s embodied opinion on those with mental illness. An author is not his characters, an author simply creates characters. Imagine a story in which everyone was nice to aeveryone. That’d be pretty boring because it is unrealistic. Andrew is presenting to us a realistic depiction of real life. There are bullies, bullies pick on those who are not what would be deemed “normal”. That’s how life works.
As for the “an author is not his characters” comment, let’s examine some other works of fiction. Take The Lion King for example. Scar is an arrogant, self centered murderer who kills Mufasa because of his own selfish intentions. The writers of the movie are not murderers who kill their brothers in order to take their places. The writers of the movie are WRITERS who create characters in order to give their story depth and to make it more interesting, not to display their world views. If the writers took Scar’s side on the matter and said that what he did was good, then a problem arises.
Andrew did not in any way say that Cronus was a good guy. I don’t even think he had anything to say at all on Cronus.
As for the people being personally butthurt by the disabled trolls or Kankri, grow up. That’s how the world works, there are people who are disabled or suffer from anything of the sort. You claim that you want to be treated like everyone else. You know what “everyone else” puts up with? Jokes. Jokes are made about EVERYONE. Name one type of person, a white person, a black person, a blind person, a rich person, ANYTHING. I’m sure someone can tell you a commonly used stereotype or some sort of joke about them. You know why? Because that’s life. Everyone makes fun of everyone. FUN. Here you are, being treated like everyone else, and it’s not enough. Do you want to be looked at as a delicate piece of china that nobody can ever dare to bring up in conversation or do you want to be accepted as a part of the world?
I’ll admit, some things can be offensive and sometimes people take things too far and say things in bad taste. I am in no way saying that it’s ok to make fun of people because IT ISN’T. Nobody should be made fun of ever, but if you are, you deal with it. That’s what happens in the real world.
In short, stop calling Andrew out for writing characters into his story that are not perfect, accepting human beings. He’s writing a story with realistic characters and should not be held accountable for anything. He has done nothing wrong.
