So you know the saying ā villains are the hero of their own story ā, that made me think how the āhero(s)ā could actually be the villain but they view themself as the hero.
Anyone read The Sorcery of Thorns? š I'm only just starting but getting some darklina vibes from Elisabeth and Nathaniel āØš
@infernigf lmfao so valid honestly ā ļø i may steal this idea to save myself future torture š
I don't remember much about this book except that the libraries are cool, someone is secretly a booklouse and the main character, her love interest and his demon cat thing are perpetually two steps away from going poly together.
Girlsā night in the Grishaverse~
Iāve never drawn so much cleavage in one go, it was a fulfilling experience š
Characters are from the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo!
Grishaverse Deep Dive: The Darkling is a Character that lives in a Society.
((spoilers for ALL of the grishaverse))
Ah, yes, Shadow and Bone season 2 is gearing up, the birds are singing, I have a cup of earl grey tea before me -Ā Ā it is finally time to sit down to talk about the Darkling, and explain his tenuous relationship with the Grishaverse.
The Darkling is a character greatly contested. When simply looking at his motivations, we see a rift in the fandom. Add in his backstory and it fractures even more. When you pepper in the third ingredient of his relationship with Alina, you get an entire war. The Darkling is a divisive character. He gets under our skin and lingers for days afterwards.
I am going to take you on a deep dive of the Darklings character, and try to tease apart the problems that lie within the creation of his character. Why were so many fans betrayed by his ending? How did he muddle the messages of Shadow and Bone, and why is his ending so complicated that it satisfies very few? Today, weāre going to look atĀ The Problem of the Darking: An Essay in Six Parts.
A little history lesson;
So first, allow me to take you back in time, to 2012, when Shadow and Bone was first released.
Two years prior, The Hunger Games Trilogy had finished coming out and, in a rather stunning turn of events, shifted the popularĀ Y.A. categoryĀ from the genre ofĀ the paranormal romanceĀ (thank you, Stephanie Meyer) to the dystopian society.Ā
Now, this is not to say that there werenāt dystopian stories prior to The Hunger Games, or that there werenāt paranormal romances in the Y.A. genre afterward. Both have survived, but the boom of dystopian stories and the whimper of paranormal romance was definitely felt.

Can you imagine how much Aleksander Morozova needs a nap
You know what fucking annoys me.
Itās okay to like the Darkling as long as you remember heās a villain!
Okay, thanks for your permission, I guess?
No actually, fuck you. Iāll like characters for whatever reason I want to like them. Including finding their actions completely goddamn justifiable or, at times, wildly OOC because the author had a hard-on for turning them into a moustache-twirling villain because she realized sheād written the ship she wanted into a terrible, stupid corner.
And if you donāt like it, I guess you can block me.
Is the Goth aesthetic completely dead?
Are we no longer listening to metal and punk?
There is nothing wrong with looking at at edgelord and saying,Ā āI think I will adopt thatā.
Or empathizing with a character like Hannibal Lector.Ā Ā
Or saying Shub-Niggurath speaks to me.
Art, stories, fiction, they are meant to inspire emotions. You should never have to explain or defend those feelings.Ā Your journey with life and self expression is your own.Ā Ā
Take up the PUNK ANTHEM: SO WHAT?!Ā
I could've finished at least some of my countless WIPs, but no, this new idea popped into my head...
I just found out Mal has a tattoo that reads:
āI am become a blade"
Somebody tell me itās a lie. I donāt believe you.
Tis no lie. He gets that tattoo in R&R. It's supposed to be a riff on Oppenheimer's "I am become death" quote, but it really does not land in context. It reads much more like Mal got a drunk tattoo from someone who transcribed his mumbled request too literally and now he has a permanent regret on his back. It is a HUGE tat on his back btw.
send me a character & Iāll answer the following about them!
general opinion: fall in a hole and die | donāt like them | eh | theyāre fine I guess | like them! | love them | actual love of my lifeĀ hotness level: get away from me | meh | neutral | theoretically hot but not my type | pretty hot | gorgeous! | 10/10 would bang hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff best quality: worst quality:Ā ship them with:Ā brotp them with:Ā needs to stay away from: misc. thoughts:Ā
Another question the show made me ask was: Does Alina create nuclear fission every time she summons one of those balls of ālightā?
Where is all the energy going?
Could she be used to power things?
Oh Gosh⦠Thatās a too technical question. I think she just gathers heat and light near her in books. Maybe she curves gravity fieldsā¦. She could power up solar batteries for sure.
Ā ZoyaĀ is able to summon lighting, by the wayā¦
It was the damn special effects department that inspired this question. They really out did themselves.
Her powers are pretty, uh, shall we say, unimpressive, in the books.
But the FX team made it look like she was holding miniature stars.Ā
And what about UV radiation? Can someone get skin cancer from standing too close to her for an extended period of time while she summons?
@caprica99 @yototothelalafell you guys would probably love the fic I Don't Even Know by Ahab2631 on AO3. Right before S&B starts, Alina gets possessed by a modern day version of herself who knows what happens in the books. She is a very different person than OG Alina, forcing the story down a different path, starting by exposing her light to the Darkling before the Fold stuff happens and naming her terms for willingly working with him. The story goes some fun directions, but the reason it came to mind during this conversation is that this Alina trains her butt off and brings modern science to her approach, so she figures out how to use her powers to inflict radiation poisoning. It's last update was years ago, but what's already there is worth a read. It's also very funny at parts, like how Alina has to convince others that she's psychic to get them to follow her "intuition" because explaining that she's currently a metatexual construct would be a lost cause.
Iām reading The Tailor and thereās this line
āThe truth. Tell her where the boy is stationed.ā
āSheāll think-ā
āI know what sheāll think, Genya.ā
I feel so stupid... what will Alina think? Heās stationed far away, heās not getting her letters? Heās not dead? Heās choosing not to respond?
I feel like Iām missing something?
aksdjsdfsdfkfh i've been blessed by @kasamira !!!! šš½šāØ
I think it means Alina will think he's alive and well and stationed somewhere but is choosing not to respond to the letters because he's done with her, which is what the Darkling wants anyway because he's hoping she will give up on Mal. I think Alina was wondering if maybe Mal was injured and recovering in a hospital somewhere and therefore couldn't respond to her letters but this makes it seem like he is deliberately ignoring her.
š¤ Thank you! That was the only thing I could think of too, Iām just loving The Tailor. Weāre being drip fed Darkling backstory and he only gets more complex! Youāre answers on here are like gospel lol
@kasamira I'm glad you're liking the Tailor. I think that and Demon in the Wood are some of the best works in the Grishaverse. Genya's amazing in this story.
I finished Demon in the Woods too, and I may enjoy the Tailor but thereās no competition.
Demon in the Woods hurt my soul.
Iām gonna write meta on both but with DITW I just donāt know where to start.
Being hurt by a book is the best thing it can do. If it makes you feel something, then (most of the time) itās succeeded.
(The exception might be SaB because it made me feel a bit spiteful lol.)
The greatest crime a book can commit is inspiring ambivalence, so I'll give S&B credit for birthing a sea of salt. That's probably the most backhanded compliment I've ever given a book. š I'm glad you loved DitW and eagerly await your analysis until it disolves into crying GIFs.
