DVD and blu-ray are really still hanging on with all their might
y'all i didn't say this was a bad thing. I'm an advocate for physically ownable media
It was recently announced that in Germany and Austria Sony is removing a lot of titles from people who purchased them digitally. More and more sites are adding in clauses stating that if the studio wants to remove the movie, they are not culpable because it’s within their rights.
Owning physical media is the only way to make sure that things aren’t taken from you. Aren’t edited without your permission.
Yeah it takes up space. Yeah it’s not as convenient. But it’s yours. And the more you use buy physical media, the more things become available.
And here’s what’s great! You can find stuff used or in like new condition for really cheap! I got my copy of Lego Batman at Walmart for $2! My copy of Tomb Raider was $3. And those were new. I got a practically unopened DVD Blu Ray combo pack for finding Nemo for $2 at a thrift store.
You can get copies of things like the Amazing Spider-Man or Knives Out on Amazon for about $10. Heck I could buy the entirety of Teen Wolf the TV show for $50.
I can watch them if the power or internet goes out. I can watch them if I’ve just moved and I have no internet yet. I can watch them if they were on a streaming site I don’t use.
And piracy is obviously a thing, but what happens when sites go down or stop carrying those things? Or they don’t have subs? Or it’s an older or rarer movie that I’m having trouble finding?
Physical media can take up space or time to get, but it’s kind of like a little treasure hunter/collection. Even if you don’t want to use physical media exclusively. I strongly suggest getting it for your favorite pieces of media. Especially because I think this issue is going to become more and more common.
