Kaleidoscopic Reflections
Summary: Naminé reflects on her bonds with her friends as well as how Sora’s disappearance impacts them all. Written for Naminé Day 2026. Gen, Friendship, Introspection, Reflection, Character Study, Grief, Light Angst, Hope. 1,141 words.
🌊 🎨 💫
Life was like a kaleidoscope, Naminé decided. Always changing and shifting thanks to her own choices as well as the choices of others. A mosaic of memories of all different shapes and sizes and colors that reflected the people around her, the people who had shaped her, even as she reflected something new and different back to the worlds. Something uniquely Naminé.
She was Kairi and yet she wasn’t. Kairi was the light to her shadow, the Other to her Nobody, the princess to her witch. They were the same yet different, mirror images of each other, imperfect reflections, seen through a glass darkly. United in their existences always lingering along the edges, divided once more by Sora’s Keyblade.
Now they were unique people. Separate existences. Individual identities. Friends.

Naminé Day 2026
Summary: The sky is beautiful, the atmosphere is peaceful, and Naminé can’t help but pout.
OR: Naminé has artist block and Riku finds a solution for that problem.
🎨🎨🎨
THE SKY IS BEAUTIFUL, THE ATMOSPHERE IS PEACEFUL, AND NAMINÉ CAN’T HELP BUT POUT.
The expression comes to her instinctively, perhaps a leftover of Kairi as she always tended to pout whenever she didn’t get her way. Naminé pouts, and keeps pouting because no matter how beautiful the day is, there is nothing for her to sketch.
It feels a little childish, sulking because she can’t find anything to draw, but could she really be blamed? It certainly isn’t the fault of Twilight Town, picturesque as it always is, with it’s perpetual sun that never sets, the high clock tower where she has spent many days gazing upwards and downwards with Roxas and Xion and Lea.
The alleyways lit by the lamp poles, where she would walk around and gossip with Olette, eating sea salt ice cream with Hayner and Pence and letting it drip down her sticky fingers from the summer air.
No, it definitely isn’t the fault of Twilight Town, a town which has quickly become her new home, full of wonderful memories and wonderful people and so much color.
No, this falls on her because she’s the one who has practically drawn everything about Twilight Town. Roxas, Xion and Lea sitting in the clock tower while eating ice cream? Done, the very first drawing she’d done since settling in town.
Roxas and Hayner locked in a Struggle match? Of course, who do you take her for? Those boys are passionate about the sport, she needed to draw them at least once in their natural habitat.
Olette posing with the sunset in the background? The moment was too beautiful to not immortalize it, Naminé’s inner artist commanded her to draw it.
Hayner and Pence sitting in the tram while talking? Naminé is a firm believer in the mundane moments, of course she had to draw it.
So maybe she has a problem, but who’s going to say anything to her? It’s not her fault that she’s drawn every inch of Twilight Town in her sketchbook, her home is too beautiful to not do so in the first place.
As it stands, she really wants to draw but there’s nothing more to draw when it comes to Twilight Town. And so here she is, walking around just to give herself something to do, pouting the entire time because apparently she can’t control her expressions anymore when she’s upset.
Truly, what’s a girl to do?
“Well now, someone isn’t in a good mood.”
Perking up at the familiar, dearly missed voice, Naminé turns to look at her silver-haired friend, leaning against a wall like he’s some cool protagonist of a book.
Or maybe he’s just imitating Leon, you never really know with Riku.
Nevertheless, her voice is warm as she greets him, “Riku!”
Something that Naminé found out about herself is how physically affectionate she could get once she truly got to know a person, which is why she wastes no time in speeding up to Riku and pulling him into a hug, wrapping her arms around his shoulders.
Riku lets out a huff, part surprise part amusement, and wraps his arms around her waist accordingly, now very much so used to her hugs and affection that spills out like ink.
She briefly remembers those times when Riku would tense at a touch, would hesitate to touch anyone, so used to thinking that his hands could only hurt and taint and damage. It’s taken him a long road to get to where he is, and she will forever be proud of him.
They separate, and Naminé can’t help but beam upwards at him, her bad mood dissipating. She can’t help it, she’s in the presence of a dear friend after all, her lack of drawing inspiration can wait a few moments or a few hours.
“I see that you’re no longer feeling down,” Riku blinks down at her, a bit surprised at how happier she looks now.
“I just don’t have anything to sketch here in Twilight Town,” Naminé lightly shrugs, feeling her smile shrink a little. No matter that she can push it aside for Riku, it still frustrates her that there’s nothing to draw for her here.
Riku stares at her for a moment, seemingly in thought, before a smirk crosses his lips.
“You’re in luck then. Pack your stuff, we’re going on a field trip.”
He leaves her there, gaping, presumably to get his gummi ship ready for the unexpected field trip he just unloaded on her.
“A field trip? To where? Riku!”
Regardless of the calls of his name, he continued walking away, leaving her to huff in exasperation.
“That boy…”
She refused to acknowledge the smile curling her lips upwards, refusing to give in.
.
.
.
Dropping down into the ocean had been a terrifying experience, and she felt no shame in glaring at Riku for it.
Said boy stared at her sheepishly, looking unfairly pretty with his green merman tail and long silver hair floating in the water. Seriously, how was he so pretty?
She now understands Kairi’s frustration.
But Naminé forgot her anger quickly, once she noticed her surroundings.
Atlantica was beautiful; a bustling underwater city that boasted pretty corals and seashells that she knows Xion would’ve gushed over had she been here.
Green columns of marble lined the place in a circle, and the palace glowed resplendently. The fish casually swam around, and the people under the sea went about their everyday lives, paying no attention to the newcomers.
Naminé herself had to admire her own tail; a beautiful pearly white with scales that reflected the rainbow when the light hit them in the surface. Her top half was decorated with two white seashells, and while she had been embarrassed at first when first seeing how she looked like, Riku made sure to tell her there was nothing she should be embarrassed about.
Truly, what would she do without him.
Seeing all this beauty surrounding her, Naminé’s hands itched with the familiar feeling of needing to draw, to capture the environment and bring it to life in her sketchbook.
And that’s when she realized it.
“Riku.”
Her deadpanned voice drew his attention, and he turned to look at her with a confused look, taking his eyes away from the sea anemone he had been looking at.
“We’re underwater. Which means I can’t use my sketchbook.”
Riku opened his mouth, as if he was about to retort something back, before his eyes flashed with realization and he closed it.
“So I may have miscalculated.”
Naminé sighed and rubbed her temple, that earlier exasperation coming back.
Riku really had no room to talk whenever he called Sora a dork, they were both dorks and this is just one of the latest reasons of him proving it to her.
“We’ll pick your art supplies from the gummi ship and you can draw from memory in the surface.”
It was the best he could offer, and he knew it too, by the guilty look on his face. Letting out another quiet sigh, Naminé smiled and nodded her head.
She was honestly grateful he took the time out of his day to bring her to a new place, a world she had only ever seen through Sora’s memories.
He had found a solution to her artist block, and even now gave her a suggestion on what to do as she couldn’t draw while underwater.
Truly, what would she do without him. She never wanted to find out.
They swam towards the surface, laughing and talking the entire way, content to just spend time together.
Naminé couldn’t have asked for a better day, and she knew she had Riku to thank for that. And so she would, by gifting him the picture she had drawn that day.
A picture of them both, swimming in the water with the castle in the background, the pretty corals and colorful reefs gracing the below.
No more did she need to insert herself in fake memories, nor did she need to replace someone else. This picture proves that Naminé is real, that she exists in other people’s heart, and that she matters to someone enough that they will take her to another world to help her draw something different.
Yes, it was a good day, and one Naminé will treasure for the rest of her life.

A/N: Happy @namineday 2026 everyone! I had to think for a while on what I wanted to write for this sweet girl, but since it it's MerMay I knew I needed to write something that had to do with mermaids, so why not Atlantica? I also really wanted to convey the positive changes Naminé has undergone and experienced since this does take post-KH3 and KH4, everyone is happy and there's nothing to worry about anymore 🥳.
I also hope you all enjoyed Naminé and Riku's friendship, they're both so dear to me and I really hope we get to see more friendship moments between them in the later series. That's all for today, I hope you all have a great day and keep on enjoying more Naminé 🎨🤍!
