     THE GREEN TECHNICIAN  grinned to the blue gem- whom she had only met once before outside of the fusion garnet. “ i’m happy for you both. garnet is such a together gem, so there is no doubt this will strengthen the bond you both have. but can i ask you something ? ”

     “ what is marry ? ”

“ well, when you LOVE someone a lot and you feel you can spend the rest of your life together, you ask them to marry you. it’s a human ritual thing to legally identify that the two are going to be together forever! ”

     Gloved hand made contact with her burning cheek, though it was not nearly as painful as the sight of tears under icy blue bangs. Guilt welled up in the heat, and she buried her face in Sapphires chest.

      Hearing it from Sapphire herself - it was still hard to believe. A ruby, unlike any other ruby, worthy of such affection? The concept is foreign, yet she can’t find herself loving anyone else as much as Sapphire. How do you unlearn something programmed into your very being?

     “   I’m sorry - I love you too! I just… I’ve never thought of myself as anything. And I feel like you deserve something.   ”

     she had no idea what it meant to have self esteem issues. sapphire loved herself and at one point who she once was. she takes ruby’s hand and linked her fingers through it before kissing the cheek she slapped. she didn’t mean to . . . she was just angry in that moment.

       ❝ i am not sure how it feels to have self loathe but ruby, sapphires are known for their visions. i’m known for my future vision and believe me, i never saw us being together coming. ❞

     she pressed her lips on ruby’s passionately. ❝ and it’s something I’d never want to lose. you’re not back on homeworld anymore   -   you’re free to be who you want to be. you’re free to love yourself and if you can’t, i’ll be there to help you. even if it takes thousands of more years . . . ruby i can’t lose you. ❞

It wasn’t often that Steven didn’t quite know what to say, but he’d found himself facing one of those moments head on. He’d known Sapphire wanted some time alone, but - he was worried, and Ruby even more so… He just.. wanted to make sure she was okay, even if he was the last person she wanted to see right now.

“S-Sapphire?” A pause. “Are.. are you doing okay?”

    Being with Steven managed to keep her calm. She pressed her hands together, inhaling deeply. Sapphire moved closer to him before placing a hand gently on his cheek.  ❝ I’m feeling really . . . angry. I’d be yelling right now but - ❞

    She gave a light laugh.

     ❝ I’m with you. ❞

    SHE laughed- nervous laughter- as tears speckled her eyes. A bad habit. She had been shell-shocked by the news, but by the stars she had to focus on Sapphire before freaking out. She was the only reason Ruby hadn’t devolved to a flaming mess just yet.

     Fists clenched, she looked down at her tense fingers as her voice choked. “I-I’m so confused right now Sapphire but- I know one thing more than I know anything else, and you know what that is?” 

     Her face cracked into a shaky smile. “It’s that I love you. I love you more than anything in this universe and- and nothing about Rose could ever change that. I fell in love with you before her. It’s the most real thing I’ve ever felt.” Tears streamed down her cheeks now, her voice wavering as she goes on.

           Sapphire visibly relaxed. And she didn’t hesitate to throw her arms around Ruby and hold her in a tight embrace. At least ONE of her thoughts quelled and Ruby’s warmth (literally and figuratively) was enough to melt her frost. She parted her bangs to take a good look at her girlfriend.  ❝   Oh, Ruby. Forgive me. . . I’m sorry I yelled at you and -  ❞

           She pressed her lips against Ruby’s tenderly. She was so very sorry. And she knew Ruby would know. Her arms never left Ruby’s shoulders when she pulled away from her. ❝    I love you, too. I never once regretted anything, either. I just . . . I needed to hear the truth or some kind of truth. I just didn’t want US to be . . .   ❞

          Sapphire shook her head, not wanting to finish her thoughts. Her lone eye cast down before she rested her head one Ruby’s shoulder. ❝  Just hold me, please   -   ❞  A slight pause.     ❝  What about the Crystal Gems?  How do you think Garnet even feels about this all?  ❞

            Her arms quickly unfolded at the mention of Pink Diamond, as if her body was preemptively preparing to silence her if she attempted to speak further on the situation. In her panic and want to explain herself, Pearl was unable to find something clever to say to find her way around the spell that was placed upon her those years ago.

                             ❝ She w- mmmmmppppphhhhhh – ❞

            She tries to explain herself in haste; causing her hands forcefully slam against her mouth with a sharp clapping sound. Her speech becomes muffled, her upper teeth clamping down on her lower lip as she screws her eyes shut as she desperately tries to pry her hands from her mouth. She knew it must have hurt Sapphire not knowing the truth – but coming first hand from Pearl; this was not a secret that you would want to be stuck with for thousands of years. The guilt and grief had completely ravaged any sane part of her that remained after the war.

     Sapphire turned her gaze away from her when Pearl was unable to speak. She wanted to put herself in her shoes and try to see things from her perspective but she was unable to do that. Her arms curl around her middle and dig into her arms, mimicking Pearl a few second ago. Then she . . . laughed. She had no clue why she was laughing and she wasn’t laughing at Pearl.

     The whole situation messed with her anxiety, her thoughts and everything around her. The mere thought that not even Pearl, the gem who has been by her side regardless when she was Garnet or not couldn’t talk to her. But she couldn’t stop laughing. But she got it, she totally got why she couldn’t talk     (    she didn’t but she sure as heck is going to say something before she does something rash . . .    )    why Pearl wouldn’t tell her.

       With her back turned, she swung her hands dramatically in the air as she spoke.

               ❝ This . . . this is amazing, Pearl! Everything that’s happened up to here is just wonderful! We’ve fought along side each other, faced hardships   -   we went through so much together and yet with this . . . this whole  FIASCO  -  ❞

   She inhaled sharply before slamming a hand to her mouth, her laughter abruptly ending. So far, she must have sounded like a fool laughing her gem off. Then she returned to being angry. Her feelings, her emotions were all over the place. 

               ❝ You - ❞ her lips moved but no words came out. Tears began to leak out of her eye and her hands trembled. There had to be some kind of trust between them all in order to be a perfectly healthy . . . team. Or have a healthy friendship as Steven called it. No . . . It couldn’t be. The air swirled around her as her eye widened behind her bang.   (   let it be a lie. let this be a lie. Sapphire can let this one slide.   )     ❝ Y - You! ❞

                         ❝   YOU DON’T   T R U S T   ME!   ❞

      A simple, silent nod. She canted her head to the side, causing her bangs to sway away from her lone eye. Sapphire can give her that chance to speak. If she had been silenced all these years, then she should be better than her    (  Rose  )   and let her talk.

      She was angry, hurt. She didn't know what to feel at all. She had seen Ruby angry at one point, and wanted her to think rationally, take things slow. The tables were turned. She was the one screaming and stomping and carrying on. But this had to be justified, right?

           The lithe gem could feel the anxiety clawing at her chest, her small frame feeling all the more vulnerable under the blue gem’s gaze. Her arms folded over themselves, fingers digging into her pale skin. She had wanted to tell Sapphire the truth for thousands of years… She wanted to tell her and the others so badly. But she wasn’t physically capable of doing so.

           Being the only gem who knew the truth besides Rose drove her mad; even more so now that Rose was gone. She was left as the last one in the universe who knew the truth. Who knew who Rose truly was, and the ugly false persona that she wore up until her death.

                         ❝ Sapphire, I’ve wanted to tell you for so long… But there 

                            is only so much that I can say to you. There are certain 

                            things that I can’t explain to you. No matter how much 

                            I want to. Rose never wanted you to know. She never

                            wanted this to hurt anyone. ❞

            Large tears currently clouded her vision, seeping out from the corners of her eyes and quickly running down her face as they built up.

      A faint smile formed on her lips. Could she even begin to believe her? Sapphire was beginning to have regrets joining the Crystal Gems. Everything she believed in, everything she had come to know     S H A T T E R E D    like PINK DIAMOND herself. Her little hands formed into fists as she spoke and, slowly, crystalline ice formed around her as she gritted her teeth. She had never felt so angered in her life.

     She was so used to thinking calmly and rationally, that this threw her off guard. A guttural growl escaped her lips as she could feel the rage within her forming. If she thought RUBY was frightening, then Pearl had a storm coming.

                ❝ Both you AND Rose   -   PINK DIAMOND   -   had thousands of years to speak up. And yet the both of you kept us, me in the dark. I betrayed my own diamond for the both of you and you’re telling me that she never wanted to hurt anyone? I’M A RENEGADE PEARL!! Just what the heck was her plan anyway? ❞

  She threw her hands up in the air, snowflakes swirling around her. She went against everything she stood for in the name of what, really? She knew, deep down, she should be so callous towards Pearl because she too was a victim but what really ate at her the most was that she knew while Sapphire herself was kept in the dark.
