Data centers have been recorded creating constant noise at a frequency outside the human range of hearing but which still causes severe issues. This could be even worse with animals that have more sensitive hearing than humans do.

We don't need to wait years to find out these things cause real harm to the communities near them, we have proof already.

to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube

they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!

i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies

Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.

just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.

Scotland Reportback - Glasgow 25/07/2026

From outnumbering to out-organising the fascist threat in Scotland! Scottish anti-fascists and anti-racists put a lot of effort into opposing the fascist Unite The Clans gathering in Glasgow on Saturday. Yet this still wasn’t enough to block the worst of their racist and misogynistic aggression. As a movement, we significantly outnumbered the fascists at the Green, and the black bloc managed to stop the fascists attempting to reach the footbridge to a mosque while there was a family day taking place. Nonetheless, when the fascists broke off into smaller groups to begin parading around the streets of central Glasgow and harassing people after the protest, there were nowhere near enough of us prepared to oppose them.  While the black bloc went after the fascists in an attempt to prevent them from moving through the streets of Glasgow unopposed, instead of joining and strengthening our numbers, the rest of the demonstrators remained behind. As a result, the black bloc was heavily outnumbered and met with both violence from the fascists, and a police force which attempted to kettle and arrest the frontline anti-fascists instead of going after the violent racist mob raging through the streets of Glasgow.  As much as Saturday further proved that the police won’t be there to protect our communities from spreading fascist violence - which disproportionately targets black and brown members of our communities - it also showed that we need more people willing to commit to taking direct action together. If, like us, you witnessed the harassment and violence that were common sights in Glasgow yesterday, consider forming an affinity group with a trusted group of friends to strengthen your capacity for future action!  Before any protest, share your contact info, any legal and medical issues you might have with each other, and what to do in case of arrest. Have each other’s backs when you’re out in the streets and travel together. Ask yourselves what action is needed to stop the far-right, and what actions you are prepared to take. Diversity within our movement is a strength. Disabled and elderly activists, or those not able to risk arrest can be involved in many different direct action strategies. For more pointers on how to create affinity groups, see the links in the comments. There are plenty of other ways to build capacity for action too, like participating in active bystanders trainings and know your rights & legal observer workshops being run across various Scottish cities. Whilst there are positives to take away from Saturday’s action - and we came away heartened by all of the support we received from ordinary Glaswegians - we feel that, as a movement, we must be better prepared to act and build our collective capacity to ensure that scenes like those witnessed at the weekend are not repeated on the streets of our cities. Nae Pasaran!

So every year, my aquarium does a captive lobster hatchery project (hence all the loblings). The reason we’re doing it is because in the wild, loblings only have a 1 in 25,000 chance of surviving their larval phase. They’re plankton as babies and everything eats them. Additionally, as the Gulf of Maine warms, they are having even lower survival rates because the blooms of copepods they feed on as babies are happening earlier in the year, and they’re missing it.

Obviously, the goal of this experiment is to grow the lobsters until they’re big enough to settle to the seabed and then release them, because they have a much higher likelihood of surviving to adulthood when they’re able to hide. Ideally, captive lobster hatcheries can boost the wild population and keep things stable, so we don’t have a major crash in a decade or two.

The first year we tried this was pretty bad. We had a lot of eggs, but very few babies. It turned out that the CO2 levels in the building spiked as more guests visited throughout the summer, and that settled into the water and threw off the pH and caused a chemical reaction that prevented a lot of the eggs from hatching. I think we ended up releasing three baby lobsters (which is still better than their wild survival rate but not great).

The second year was a little better. We added a de-gasser to the aquarium and got a ton of larval lobsters, but right as they were settling to the bottom we had a disease outbreak that killed most of them. We ended up releasing four babies at the end of the season.

But this year? Oh boy. We have so many lobsters that we had to release the first round early (usually we wait till September or October so guests can see them). We just released a total of FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FIVE baby lobsters, and we still have over a hundred who haven’t settled to the bottom yet. I genuinely don’t even have words to explain how cool this is. OVER FIVE HUNDRED. We just added hundreds of lobsters to the wild population that wouldn’t have been there otherwise.

We're doing the same in Whitby, England, and there's a little aquarium attached and it ROCKS. Huge recommend to anyone in England looking for a little fun in the town that made Dracula.

They have a bunch of very happy "berried hens" (i.e. mother lobsters covered in eggs), a set of (essentially) aquatic centrifuges that rock the baby lobsters around to help build their strength against the currents, and a GIANT 35-year-old blue lobster named MELVIN who wanders around in a big tank living his best life, with a couple of sharks for room-mates.

It's a MARVELLOUS time and they're on course to release 100,000 lobster babies a year!
