one of the reasons i felt like everybody was losing their minds over Black Annabeth Chase was that percabeth has long since been regarded in a lot of reader's minds as "couple goals". In the OG series, their romance is a big important part of the storyline, the resolution and the buildup absolutely adorable and heart-warming. however their relationship, while cute, isn't unlike one you would find in everyday rom-coms and movies. they fit the narrative (at the risk of sounding biased, they exceed it) but they're not anything crazy. I mean dark haired white boy falls in love with blonde white girl has been done so often i can think of several examples. it's everybody's standard for love, it's what we've been fed forever. and now for once in your white life, in mainstream media the big amazing main love story that makes everybody go crazy isn't going to be about you, someone like you, or someone to project onto. it's mindblowing, it's crazy, it's about damn time. it's not often that this occurs and couples with black women often don't get the same hype as those without but now little black girls get more than throwaway love stories in mainstream media and aren't cast aside as the best friend whose life revolves around the mc. this time the main love story is going to be about a black girl who has someone who adores her. in a society that raves about how undesirable black women are and constantly berates them, this could be so many little girls' safe place. that exceeds your love for percy jackson and your picture perfect couple. that exceeds your self-justified need to be centered in every story.

note : rick riordan isn't doing anything crazy. he's simply reflecting. there was a total of (1) named black character in the first series. beckendorf was a throwaway that he put no effort into. for a camp supposedly, at that time, known to us to be the only safe haven for demigods, you're telling me there was one black person significant enough to be named and involved?

part of the reason why annabeth chase being black is important is because this will show a black girl having a mental disorder and learning difficulties- and she won't be demonized for it. no one is gonna make her feel like a bad person or a burden for having them. no one will tell her that she doesn't have them or "can't possibly be ADHD." shit like that is so important.
