Historical Preservation is Expensive
Do I wish we lived in a society where artistic and cultural preservation didn't require the patronage of the worst people ever? Of course, but this is the system we are in. We can NOT let our artistic heritage be a victim of that terrible system.
There are a lot of very good faith critiques of the Met Gala, especially this year. It makes perfect sense to boycott and take this opportunity to try and focus people's attention on labor rights or the myriad of other ways that Bezos is killing us.
That said, this event helps to pay for the Met to save artifacts all year, and helps the museum stay 'Suggested donation' to visitors. (Meaning you can get in for almost free if you get past the guilt trip at the desk). Not to mention the enormous online archive the museum maintains that can be accessed anywhere with internet
If you are someone who posts a "Met Gala = Hunger Games Capital" hot take every year, and you have none of that energy for say, the Super Bowl? You are a moron. Displays of wealth in the face of all the world's problems is fine when it's a combat game that only benefits corporate owners - but when it's for the Humanities and involves pageantry? All of the sudden the moral degradation is too much to stand. Preservation of our arts is important and deserves more thoughtful critique than this.
The MET Gala is a fundraiser for The Met. Putting on the fashion exhibition is VERY costly. Has the politics, inflation, and bullshit gotten out of hand? Yeah. To give you an idea of how much this can cost, the collection I work for has 2 gowns from 1798 & 1809 currently being conserved and had mounts made for them so displaying them wouldn’t cause further damage. They were already in a solid B shape and cost more than 50k to conserve so the public can view them for 5 months each. They will then be reboxed (archival tissue and box) for a minimum of 10 years before they’re considered to be seen again. Oh, and archival material only lasts 10 years before it has to be replaced, whether or not it’s being considered for display.
Don’t like the gala? Support local museums with a textile or fashion collection, they get fractions of the revenue or publicity, and still aim to achieve a solid fraction of what the MET does. More collections are deaccessioning their textiles because they’re costly to maintain, large and need space. However, after big names artists like Van Gogh, Botticelli or da Vinci they get the most interest in from the public. The study of clothing is an opportunity to shine light on women & minority stories as well. Don’t let the fact that some of the guests suck and have more money than any of them need take away the importance of museums and dress study.
kinda crazy how like every cult documentary is like "here's the survivors we spoke to who all have a range of different experiences, beliefs, talents, skills and stories" and all the survivors of the cult are like "i consider myself a rational person and this initially gave me a sense of community and was offering me the one thing i needed, it was a wonderful experience at first and i was surrounded by people i loved and who loved me, and by the time i realised how bad things had gotten i was in too deep and had alienated all my friends and family outside of the group and had been brainwashed over a period of time to think that any suffering was deserved and that by leaving i would be causing harm to myself and everyone i knew, and if things had been good once then maybe they would be again, and i had to believe that because i had nothing else left" and then half the reviews are people talking about how stupid cult survivors are and how they would NEVER be so dumb to join a group like this, clearly these idiots KNOWINGLY joined a cult and therefore deserved everything that happened to them, maybe if they had tried been as smart and rational as me,
