Actually, I had a post that discusses this in the works already, so I’ll address it here:

You can’t condemn Dabi killing 30 people and in the same breath say that Hawks had no choice in killing Twice or that he did it for the “greater good.” And if you do, ask yourself why? Why does Twice’s life not matter?

I want everyone who makes the claim that “Hawks killing Twice to prevent even more destruction and loss of innocent life” to really, truly understand what that means. Because the point is right there in that sentence – Prevent.

When you say “prevent” you’re admitting that Hawks killed Twice for a crime he had yet to commit. He acted as judge, jury and executioner before the trial could ever commence. Twice was guilty of other crimes, many others, but he was killed for the sole possibility of what he might do with his quirk. Hawks states this point-blank.

You can dance around the truth with discussions of heroes vs villains, altruism vs utilitarianism, whatever you want. Here is the heart of the matter:

Twice was killed because his quirk was deemed too dangerous should he utilize its full potential against the heroes. Twice was born with this quirk. So Twice was killed for the sheer, simple fact that he existed.

If you don’t think that’s wrong, I don’t know what to tell you. And would you agree if we applied this logic to other characters?

Toga has proven that in a pinch Ochako’s quirk can be used to kill multiple people at once with hardly any effort at all. Controlling gravity with a mere touch can be incredibly deadly. Should the heroes kill her to prevent her from ever using it in this way? No?

So why kill Twice?

Eraserhead can cancel out other quirks. If he ever turned against the heroes, even if only temporarily, it would be very difficult for anyone to stop him because of his advantage against other quirks. Do they kill him to prevent this? No?

So why kill Twice?

Shinsou can use mind-control and spoke at length about how the fear of his quirk has made people avoid him, even though he’s never given anyone reason to be afraid. But what if he did decide to use it against people? Or what if he was forced to? Do they kill him to prevent this possibility? No?

So why kill Twice?

Furthermore, the “greater good” is a nebulous, subjective thing that holds no argumentative value when you can apply it to literally any character. You could say, “Well, yes, Dabi has killed 30 people, but that was so the reveal that he was Endeavor’s son and the product of his abuse would more impactful on the public. This impact forces the public to think more critically about the hero system and how flawed it is. Society has to institute massive reforms to placate the growing criticism and calls for action. Reforms prevent the creation of more villains and begin to rehabilitate existing ones so this lowers the chance of recidivism. His actions, while heinous, lead to a better outcome for society as a whole. So it’s sad but in the long run it was better for everyone else and it actually protected more innocent people, so it’s okay he killed those 30 people.”

Would you excuse it then? No?

Then why jump through mental hoops to excuse Hawks for the murder of Twice? Heroes aren’t supposed to kill people in BNHA, period. The manga has established this since day one. So if Hawks kills Twice, but you say that’s justified, then what you’re actually saying is his life had no value.

And Toga is right to be afraid! Justifying the death of Twice is a slippery slope. You say, “Well, he was a criminal.” But how do you define a criminal? Who gets to decide who’s a criminal and who is not? In the BNHA universe, hell, you’re a criminal for using your quirk in public without permission from the government. Which the kids in Class-A did to rescue Bakugo! Do they deserve to be stripped of their rights?

What if you have a dangerous quirk? There’s plenty of heroes and civilians that do. One mistake or wrong move and they could end up like these people:

…or should we not consider them people, because of the abilities they inherited at birth?

My final note is at the end of the day, this is a story and the characters are not real. Who you root for is your prerogative! You can like Hawks and not really care for Twice, so his death doesn’t bother you. You can like Dabi and have no connection to the nameless, non-characters he killed and thus not particularly care that he did so. Nothing is wrong with preferences and nobody has any control over who/what resonates with you on a personal level.

But what you can’t do is twist the narrative to make it seem as though this character did nothing wrong, when they absolutely did. You can’t claim that Dabi/Toga/Shigaraki should be punished for their crimes while heroes like Hawks should be absolved, when there is no difference. None.
