thinking about Howl’s Moving Castle again and watching the movie after reading the book rlly made the book so much funnier bc the movie is like:

Howl, in Patrick Bateman’s voice: “Hello sweetheart, darling, love of my life, how are you on this fine day? I am going to take you to a beautiful field of flowers before we inevitably have to return to The Plot so that we may further develop our fated romance that you began years ago and just don’t know yet”

Sophie, internally monologuing: “Wow he is so Handsome and Noble, truly the perfect man. I am so glad that this horrible curse led me to be able to know him and his cool moving castle and sentient fire and apprentice, who are my best friends now <3”

Calcifer and Markl, nodding along: “yes we are the best friends and are also in the room”

And then the book is like:

Sophie, angrily hurling things at Howl: “YOU INSOLENT, FICKLE, HEARTLESS EXCUSE FOR A WIZARD DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW STUPID WHAT YOU JUST DID WAS?! WE COULD HAVE DIED!!”

Picturing a "survived the Waylon Place... HOWEVER" scenario where the way Max fell and how far he fell down would've made it a lethal fall instead of a fatal one. On the way to the hospital his heart stops and he's dead for several minutes. They manage to revive him, he takes some time to heal and eventually comes back to school a few weeks later.

Everything seems fine for a while but weird shit keeps happening. Max is always disappearing from classes, things are getting destroyed, more reports of people getting injured or killed on the news. The group get a text from Max to meet him and they're convinced he's finally gonna let them have it for the prank but they get there and he's sitting down with bloodshot eyes, downs a beer in one go and is like, "so do you guys remember danny phantom"
