Question for the community:
Are the Highborne, Kaldorei, and Shaldorei xenophobic?
HHH.
The short answer is mostly yes.
The long answer is ‘it depends’. KAldorei were highly opposed to human and orc intervention on Kalimdor during the Third War, up until the full invasion of demonic forces. They have also opposed a lot of trade with other races, especially those more prone to violent measures, while also being violent in kind.
Tyrande for certain shows quite a bit of hesitance toward other elves, notably the Shal’dorei and Highborne over time. As does Elisande…at least at the start.
At thisp oint, Thalyssra and Tyrande have evolved to the point where they can accept some races and not accept others based on race/history alone.
Not that all elves are this way. Maiev at first showed signs of high resistance ot KAldorei interaction with the Alliance, and murdered Highborne in WOLFHEART (whether you see that as canon is up to you since its events played a minimal role in future writings) Others were more accepting, such as Shandris’ unquestionable support for the 7th Legion in the War Campaign.
So I leave it to the individual character and their own decision in order to reflect their own political affiliations with the Alliance as a whole.
Oooo, yay! Thanks for the short & long answer. I love this.
I’m really glad you mentioned the opposition to humans and orcs in the Third War, as that is where my question stemmed from initially.
I think it is really interesting how the short answer of ‘yes’ can be reflected in different characters and organizations in a variety of ways. Perhaps there is an inherent line of xenophobia in most elves, but it changes based on their individual experiences. Seems pretty believable that it might function that way.
Now, how do you think this ‘translation’ (as in movement over time or change, rather than a different meaning), might be effected by the longer lifetimes of the Kaldorei?
This is exceptionally dependent on a few factors, in my opinion.
First is exposure to other races. A lot of sociological studies show IRL that exposure to the ‘other’ often decreases the amount of avarice one might hold toward said party. You hang around humans long enough, you learn to tolerate them and even love them.
Second would likely be justification for said convictions. If you had lost multiple family members to orc/human forces, you might not be as open to political engagement with them.
Age is also relevant. My older Kaldorei (or former KAldorei) Elyza is very set in her ways….or was up until her recent storyline. She found humans and nobility to be abhorrent, and the Horde even more so.
There are likely other factors but your actions and the actions against you are the #1 factors that might change your sense of idealism regarding other races.
