An Open Letter to Tumblr about the Adult Content Ban and How it is Hurting Your Users:
Recently, Tumblr was removed from the Apple app store due to an incident involving child pornography. This incident is incredibly unfortunate, but it doesnât stand alone. Tumblr was also removed from the app store due to the large influx of porn bots and pornographic spam, users claiming to be proud to be pedophiles, blatant Nazism, racists who are not deleted for sending hate and harassing users, and more. I myself reported someone for harassing me, but because I had blocked the person and couldnât access the messages where they harassed me, they were still able to send me anonymous asks. Your support staff, with back doors to the website (presumably), claimed they could not access the messages, and I was left SOL. Many features on this website do nothing to actually protect your users from harassment, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Nazis, pedophiles, predators, porn bots, and more.Â
You claim in your statement to us that you âhave been working on these problems for a long timeâ. This is blatantly untrue. Please do not lie to us and patronize us. Weâve been here. Weâve seen you do nothing over, and over, and over again.Â
We complained to you for months and months about the rampant porn bots, and you did nothing except add a report button on mobile which only reported sensitive content or spam at best. You could have addressed this problem with an effective algorithm, but you did not. We complained to you about being harassed and sent hate speech for being LGBT+, and you did nothing. We complained to you about blogs being randomly deleted, and sometimes youâve restored them, other times you have not. We complained to you that there were people proudly claiming to be âMinor Attracted Personsâ, or pedophiles, and you did nothing. We complained to you about people proudly claiming to be white supremacists, and you did nothing. All of these things are âagainst the community guidelinesâ, and yet over and over, you have not found effective ways to handle these problems or suppress the feeling of welcome that these users claim to get here. You have had a long time to work on these problems, but you havenât addressed them. To say you have is untrue.Â
Multiple other social networking websites, such as Wordpress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and others have effectively dealt with rampant pornography, racism, pedophilia, and other problems without causing massive issues for their users who are not misusing the platform. They are continuing to find new, effective ways to deal with these issues without causing problems for their userbase as a whole. There is no reason that you are unable to do this effectively other than that you wanted to do it quickly. You have once again chosen your stock holders over your users. And we have had enough.Â
You have already started to ban âAdultâ content with a new algorithm. Here are screenshots of just a fraction of the posts you have flagged as containing adult content:
Your new system of simply tackling everything at once is not working. At all. And each of these screenshots is proof of your utter incompetence. None of these posts contain pornographic acts, âfemale nipplesâ, or any community violation of any kind.Â
We, the users, have been asking you for months to deal with these problems - particularly, the porn bots and bots that spam. In order to block a bot from a side blog, I have to do it manually, even though they are in my side blogâs feed. This is a huge issue for mobile - only users. They keep cropping up in droves, taking over our posts and tricking google into making it look like a legitimate blog linked to a pornographic website. We have complained to you for months and months now, and your solution to simply âban all adult contentâ is ineffective. I agree that children should not be able to access pornography - but this is not how you tackle a porn bot problem. Your system is utterly useless, allows for racists, pedophiles, porn bots, and Nazis to remain untouched. It also harms sex workers and real people who may use this website for some forms of adult content responsibly. Moreover, as seen above, it harms plenty of users who have in no way violated your terms of service.
If you keep this up, you threaten your website and company as a whole. Many of us are backing up our blogs and planning places to go to.Â
You already have a content filter for âsensitiveâ content (content inappropriate for younger viewers). You could have improved this, instead of attacking your entire user base. It seems to be a very lazy âsolutionâ, if you could call it one at all, and one that harms your entire userbase.
If you are going to keep this filter in place and make Tumblr, a website that has never been known for being family friendly and has never claimed to be, you are going to lose millions of your users. We are already planning our exodus. It isnât hard to follow. Censor us, and we will go somewhere else. That is not a threat. It is a promise.Â
Sincerely,Â
The users of your website.Â
@staff @support
They flagged this post immediately and Iâve submitted it for review⊠this is⊠quite a week.
If you believe these words, reblog it, please. I want this to be right in their face because I couldnât email them directly.Â
please listen to this poor man losing his shit as he reads an article blaming millenials for killing the mayonnaise industry that was written by a babyboomer upset people donât want to eat her bland salads anymore
PLEASE TURN THE SOUND ON
OH MY GOD
you can find me on bdsmlr, twitter, sharesome and ph as cutekinkyqueerÂ
im also on mewe mewe.com/i/queerkid
staff saying âfemale presenting nipplesâ & then clearing out the top surgery tag for trans men is so sus đ€Ș
like i already knew that meant women and trans men, because why not be transphobic amidst all this other stuff, but also wild because their little footnote said that these images in âmedical settingsâ or specifically about top surgery wouldnât be affected. and yet. they just cannot pass up opportunities to oppress LGBT expression.
REBLOG IF NAZIS OFFEND YOU MORE THAN NIPPLES.
oh god what is going on now
guys calm down, you can still draw fictional people naked
#just not fucking.#I can live with that.#honestly this is slightly irritating but not âTHE SKY IS FALLINGâ
Yyyyyeah except theyâve already:
purged the âchronic painâ tag
purged the âtop surgeryâ tag
made âtransâ tag inaccessible to non-functional
deleted a bunch of chronic illness blogs
deleted a bunch of chronic pain and chronic illness posts from blogs theyâve left (like mine)
This isnât just about âoh no you canât look at people fucking anymoreâ (even though lots of sex workers are losing their means of supporting themselves). This goes a lot further, with a lot more chilling effects.Â
The sexualizing of things like âtop surgeryâ or declaring all âtransâ tagged things to be ⊠sexual⊠is really, REALLY fucked up. Never mind the fact that âchronic painâ had NOTHING to do with sexiness, and weâve been given no explanation as to why disabled people were considered acceptable collateral damage.
ALSO I had a post flagged earlier today for a cartoon picture of Mario in a bathing suit. Mario, from Super Mario Brothers.Â
Someone else reported a picture of a cartoon scorpion with a hard hat on being flagged as pornography. Tagging things as âqueerâ or âgayâ gets them flagged NSFW. (Hey, guess what Iâd been tagging my t-shirts, because theyâre pride stuff? Oh right. Queer. Gay. Pride.)
This is a fucking problem, letâs not blow it off.
I know some people are too young (or simply werenât involved in fandom back then) to remember what went down with livejournal and a couple of other sites âback in the dayâ, but it all started out as âitâs okay, weâre just removing the nasty pornâ, and then âokay well, just make sure you put your porn behind a cut, no, wait jk you need to host it externally, a link is fine, maybeâ and pretty much devolved swiftly into âactually sweety, LGBT content is inherently NSFW by default because it might make the kiddies gay if we expose them to it, so yâall need to leave now byyyeeeeâ.
LikeâŠthat happened. And it took nearly a decade for the fandom spaces to recover and stabilize and to get to the point where LGBT content creators could host their content without being told âyouâre not welcome hereâ and Iâm just sitting here, watching as youtube demonetizes LGBT content creators, and Facebook flags up LGBT ads as âinappropriateâ and now tumblr is going through the queer and gay tags and just mass blanketing it as inappropriate, while actual pornbots and nazis wind up in my recommended feed.
Like I am uncomfortable yâall. I am looking around at everything Iâve built and all the friends Iâve made and I know weâre all looking for the next safe space to jump to while hoping we donât lose each other overnight like âthe olden daysâ where youâd wake up and your fave blogger was just gone.
And usually it was because theyâd drawn or written something as simple yet explicit as a kiss. It was just the wrong kind of kiss.
So yea, the sky is not falling, but the ice under our feet sure is making worrying sounds.
If you think this is going anywhere but down, youâre lying to yourself. Ever since Yahoo bought out Tumblr theyâve been waiting to do this. Itâs never been a question of if, itâs only been a question of when.
And they just gave us the answer: now.
Female, presenting nipples.
I tried to resist reblogging this but I failed
Staff: Weâre getting rid of all adult content on Dec. 17th to combat illegal content!
Everyone: You do realize this ban only hurts the people producing legal content, right? Like, those small pages posting illegal stuff never tag their pages appropriately, and donât care about having to remake a new blog if theirs gets nuked because they can just make a new burner account to post that stuff again.
Staff: âŠ
Everyone: The only adult content that will likely be spreading around would be the illegal content, since you are strong-arming the legally-abiding and responsible adult content creators who take care to tag and label their content and not post anything thatâs god damn illegal.
Staff: âŠ
Everyone: Thatâs also assuming that there wonât be people that just continue posting adult content, either with censor bars or cuts to bypass the adult content check, or by just posting whatever anyway and not caring.
Staff: âŠ
Everyone: None if this even addresses the racism problems that people did have, including the adult bloggers you are now getting rid of. You canât just get rid of text posts or images of disgusting rheotoric unless thereâs a nipple in the mix, yeah?
Staff: âŠ
Everyone: Speaking of which, this new plan of yours still requires moderation, which is seemingly the main responsibility you are actively dodging with this adult content ban measure.
Staff: âŠ
Everyone: So now, basically nothing will have changed except for all the responsible adult content creators being gone that made up a decent number of your most active and loyal users, some of the most active critics and filters of racist content users being banned, and the only people being left posting illegal content or blatantly breaking your rules to post legal adult content to spite you.
How did you think this was going to pan out?
Staff: ⊠but we said no adult content tho.
Ko-Fi isnât allowing NSFW either
This might be old news to you, but I was surprised to see my page had been paused and is under review because of my sexually-explicit content.
https://ko-fi.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360007937553-Illegal-Adult-and-NSFW-Content
Iâve been pretty vocal about this before, but itâs worth stating again:
Any platform that uses PayPal or Stripe as payment processors are not porn/lewd content friendly whatsoever. PayPal can (and will) freeze your whole ass account and deny you access to your money. This has mainly been used to target sex workers but Iâve been seeing an uptick in artists getting hit too.
The real gag will be tumblr doing all this and still not getting back on the App Store
According to tumblrâs pre-existing filters this image is nsfw so i cannot wait to see what gets banned when they do this site-wide
Ha ha, no, of course not.
Yahoo is a notorious repeat offender. Yahoo is the reason the âif youâre not paying money for a service, then youâre not a customer, youâre the product.â saying exists.
Here is some fully general advice: If youâre the user of a free-to-use website, and you learn that itâs being bought by a large company, then this is always, and forever, bad news. If itâs not an acquihire, then itâs something worse. Youâre not a customer, youâre the product.
If weâre lucky, this will be a Livejournal-style buyout, where the site just gradually disintegrates over the course of several years. If weâre unlucky, then itâll be a Posterous-style buyout, and Tumblr will be shut down when Yahoo goes bankrupt in six months. It is vanishingly unlikely that being owned by Yahoo will benefit Tumblr users at all.
Predictions:
More ads. Karp has a weirdly principled dislike of ads, for a guy running a free social network. Marissa Mayer is unencumbered by morals, here. If you spend a billion dollars on something, youâre gonna want a return on income.
NSFW content is probably going to be banned, or heavily restricted. (As in, âverify your age by giving us a credit card numberâ) Ad networks hate and fear porn, and Yahoo is going to run more ads. No other Yahoo property allows NSFW content, for precisely this reason.
They might try to restrict fan content, due to copyright/CP concerns, as Livejournal did; they might not.
Dogs and cats living together. Mass hysteria!
I called it, five years in advance.
The prophecy was right there and we all ignored it.
Flags
I have had 3 mineral posts flagged as adult content today. They contained a tourmaline, a muscovite, and a galena. On Friday I had 3 fossil posts flagged as adult content, including a fossil fish, a fossil tooth from a mastodon, and a Tyrannosaur vertebrae. Iâve submitted appeals for each. This has been getting worse over the past month, apparently most of geology content is now only for adults.Â
Apparently you canât get your rocks off on Tumblr anymore.Â
i am contractually obligated to congratulate you on this reply
Students, you have NO IDEA how high that bar is.Â
fuck dude, thereâs sure not
This. This is whatâs getting thrown out with the almighty Tumblr algorithm: expressions of love. Expressions of affection and acceptance and hope. Positive reflections of what two people in love look like, regardless of who they are or who they love. Itâs taken years for me to accept who I am, in large part because I went through my childhood not seeing people like me; 19 years I told myself I was different, and for that I was ashamed of myself. Not everyone is fortunate enough to escape to a physical place where they are accepted. But we had this community we built here. Visibility matters. Seeing yourself in the light matters. And now, as a result of years of inaction and ambivalence about REAL issues, we - our community, our expression, our pride - are being pushed back to the shadows.
We are not explicit.
This is literally pissing me off
