It feels more like 5 years than 1. With every book, I strive to grow as a writer by doing something different. With HUMAN AFTER ALL, everything about it was a first, including somehow writing 4 different endings. With WHISPERING OF ECHOES, I used imagery in a way I hadn't before, and it was my first short story. With THE WALLS, I wrote a flat-out page-turner, exciting story that never let the reader (or writer) breathe. In THE FATE OF LEAVES, I explored character devleopment through dialogue and subtext. And in HEART HALF BLACK, I wrote an 80 page conversation, essentially, between just two people that held the interest of the reader (and writer). Every summer since 2017, I've released a new novel, but during this 2020 summer of COVID, I'm holding off. Can't launch a novel properly, can't tour to shows and bookstores, can't do so much I normally would to make the book successful. "Done" is a good word. A happy word. A satisfying word. Finished the second draft of my next novel today. Started writing it on 12/14. Finished the first draft on 2/17. Started editing the second draft on 2/20 Finished 4/5. After a few days off, I'll start third draft before sending it to editing. Why are you/Why aren't you #SocialDistancing ? I'm curious. I am doing it. At least I'm trying really hard to only go out if necessary, and when I do, I maintain my space, 3 to 6 feet. I'm #immunocompromised. I'm doing it for me, my #family who need me, my #friends, for others in the #HighRiskCovid19 category, really for everyone. I know we won't have to do it forever, but I feel I need to for now. My #son is home from #college on an expanded #springbreak. I'm even distancing from him, not even a welcome home hug. That was hard. What about you? Where are you at with this whole thing? I'm on day 5, I think. Maybe day 6. It hasn't been bad. Historically, I haven't spent my days idly, and I'm not now either. I have things to do at the house, #chores and whatnot. #Exercise, most I can do here, or I go for a long walk. Work, of course. Doing a ton of #editing on my next #novel. I've read a bit. Haven't watched a lot of #TV or binged on Netflix or Prime, maybe I'll do that this #weekend. But, most importantly, I'm limiting #news coverage exposure to an hour a day.
