LinkedIn's search feature is not the best. Circumvent it by using Google to search. Simply go to Google, type your search terms and then follow with site:linkedin.com. For example, "real estate attorney jobs chicago site:linkedin.com" Voila. Enjoy.

as well. The beauty of LinkedIn is that it allows the employer and/or recruiter to find you instead of the other way around. By keeping a high profile, you will be noticed and contacted sooner rather than later. You keep a high profile by being active, joining groups and getting involved in discussions. Joining relevant groups on LinkedIn allows you to extend your personal brand and also reach out to more people as you can contact any group member directly. Groups are useful for news postings, discussion boards, updates in general, networking, questions and answers and so forth. So what groups should a job seeker join? Well, recruiters trawl a lot of groups but as a rule of thumb you want to go for the big and established ones. You can join up to 50 groups and it’s all free. These are the LinkedIn groups you have to join (all clickable links): 1. A Job Needed – A Job Posted The title says it all, claims to be fastest growing, and the most productive group in the career and recruitment segment. About 9k members at the moment. 2. Career Change Central A group for job changers and people in career transition to meet in a central place with recruiters, hiring managers, and career coaches. Has racked up 11k members. 3. CareerLink Network Takes a more holistic approach to your career and life, helping you with spiritual and personal growth. This group has just south of 8k members. 4. Corporate Recruiters A group for corporate, on in-house if you will, recruiters. Joining this will hopefully get you in direct contact with companies. The group has 33k members. 5. Executive Suite A massive group connecting executives and recruiters mainly in the US. It has its own newsletter and now has over 168k members. 6. Job Openings, Job Leads and Job Connections Another group with a self explanatory title. Over 77k member at the moment. 7. Jobs Alert Provides career opportunities at middle and senior level of management in companies across the globe. Focussed on India, the UK and the US. Just shy of 6k members. 8. Linked:HR A group for managers, corporate recruiters, headhunters, HR folks and now you. Claims to be the biggest HR group on LinkedIn and the most active for discussions. This group has a whopping 211k members so I am inclined to believe that. 9. Personal Branding Network A group by my buddy Dan Schwabel about how to use your brand for your job search and career in general. The smallest group on this list with just under 3k members. 10. Positive Thinkers A group for optimistic people who believe in the power of positive thinking and concentrate on the good rather than the bad. Obviously very useful when looking for jobs in this day and age, the group is pushing 5k members. Don't Ask for a Job

One of the BEST pieces of advice I received at the beginning of my journey was to not ask for a job-- instead ask for names. People tend to clam up and shut down when someone is asking for a job. However, even the busiest among us can toss a name and phone number to someone. Networking with people we don't know can be awkward, but if success in each of these interactions is defined as simply sharing a name and phone number or two-- everyone is likely to come out ahead. I have found people to be very friendly and helpful and almost eager to give ideas and contact names. Just make it clear that you aren't desperate and don't be selfish. Offer to help them with whatever names or contacts they need as well and keep "paying it forward."

Power of Positive Energy

As we go through life we encounter energy-givers and energy-drainers everywhere we go. Increasingly I am attracted to those who give off an air of positivity as they encounter life’s challenges. What is the difference between those people who encounter a set of challenges and collapse in defeat and those who are energized and stiffen their backs and draw energy to conquer the obstacles before them? Perspective.

I try to continually wash my mind with perspective that everything I encounter is not an accident and it is not a random set of events. I wash my mind with the knowledge that God is in control of even the smallest and most seemingly random occurrences. That all of these random events are working together as part of a fabric and plan that is far above anything I can imagine because it is bigger than just me. I definitely play a role and am very interested in my piece of the puzzle, but look to God as my sovereign Lord. He is the Creator and sustainer of life.

The Lord foils the plans of the nation; He thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever, the purposes of His heart through all generations. Psalm 33:10-11.

When I go through life, I am attracted to those who have a positive spirit and who assume positive outcomes and who exude positive energy. I have both exemplified this standard at times and have been the antithesis to my shame. In every instance, perspective made the difference. Where was I placing my focus? When focused upward – everything makes sense as I see how the pieces fit together and my role in the puzzle and I strive to perform my role excellently with boldness. When focused down – I become introverted, self-protective, distrusting and exhausted. Thankfully, God knows who we are and is patient with us.

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. For He knows how we are formed; He remembers we are but dust. Psalm 103:13-14.

Keep looking up.

Networking can be awkward, especially when you're sitting down for a one-on-one meeting. But with a little planning and preparation, you can make the most of it. Here are a few smart strategies to get you started.

Exercise and job searching

In the course of announcing my job search to trusted friends and co-workers, I was surprised at the number of people that suggested I make sure to exercise daily. Surprised for two reasons: 1) people rarely intentionally check in on each other to make sure those we care about are getting sufficient exercise; and 2) special attention seemed to be placed on the need to be sure and get enough exercise while searching for work. This got me thinking.

There have been numerous articles lately connecting lack of exercise and overwork as being the bane of the American worker. Whether the lack of exercise is compared to cigarette smoking or other extreme comparisons, no one denies its importance to our regular health – and yet – how many of us actually exercise consistently?

Before my wife and I got married nearly eight years ago, we made a pact to remain active and not allow ourselves to “spread.” We agreed to eat healthy and exercise for the rest of our lives. I cannot count the number of times that pact has helped us to stay the course.

Eating healthy and exercise was always a natural part of my life growing up. According to my wife, my experience was not normal. I had two parents who were avid exercisers in various forms. My father was a runner until his feet couldn’t take it anymore and he switched to cycling. My mother switched from various forms of exercise depending on the people she was associating with, but never stopped moving, stretching and strength training. We always ate very healthy growing up with an emphasis on vegetables and meat as a side item.

Given this background, I have always enjoyed eating healthy and exercising with my two favorite activities being cycling and strength-training. In my job search, I decided to take the admonition to exercise seriously and have attempted to do so daily along with my list of activities that directly support job searching. So far, the benefits I have noticed are:

Fresh air in my lungs and a clear head

Ideas for new things to try in my searches

Breaking up the day

Energy Energy Energy

Reminder of the long-term investment in my body and mind to be healthy

So, whether you are job searching while employed or job searching full-time. Make the effort to get out and sweat. Your body and your job search will thank you.

Don't go it alone

Even if you are networking and working your system, searching for a job can be a long process. Get some friends and family together and form a group that you can bounce ideas off of, be accountable for your daily/weekly goals and be encouraged. We aren't mean to live this life alone, so don't! Get a group of people together and go for it!

Have a daily plan

Get an overall plan together and then execute on the plan. I will share more of what my daily routine entails in future posts. But as the article I just posted said, don't just wander aimlessly. I'm a statistics nerd, so I have my list of To Dos and then go down the list checking items off as I go. I'm recording what I've done each week and am adjusting my priorities as I go to make sure my strategies are diverse, effective and likely to lead to future success.

Track every application

Whenever you apply for a job, track the basic information on the job. The majority of companies have an impersonal job application process, so you may not have the name of a person to do follow-up, but if you do by all means record it. Even if you have no personal contact information, record the basics of the job and keep networking. You may have an internal contact later and it will be useful to have the job details to get a referral.

The job search process can be challenging for many and with so many avenues to explore, it may be difficult to figure out which direction to go. However, there are certainly some habits that make the job search process more difficult than necessary. Here are seven habits I have noticed with job seekers struggling with their job search. 1. Demonstrates a Lack of Focus. Do you know what you are looking for or are you indecisive about your career path? If so, you may want to make some decisions about the career you would like to focus on. It does not mean that you have to choose just one type of job, but you do need to establish area(s) of focus before proceeding with your job search. This allows you to maximize your time and energy towards a specific goal. 2. Takes a One-Size-Fits-All Approach. Does your job search strategy lack variety? Is your resume posted on just one or two job boards or are you using the same resume for each position that you apply [...]

Aggregate and Follow

To make your search most-efficient, find job aggregation sites that comb company websites and list jobs. The paid sites work best and are worth the money. If you have specific companies you are targeting, follow them on LinkedIn and get their job postings.
