I feel like I've really captured their essence

It feels like a lot of people attribute Scott's contribution towards Pyro's downwards spiral to active attempts to "make him worse" or shape him into some sort of ideal vampire. When, more objectively, Scott's major contribution to Pyro's downwards spiral is through pervasive apathy. Initially, with his apathy towards Pyro's personal autonomy by turning him without consent. Then, apathy in Pyro's possible hardships with his new vampirism, treating him as an equal ally (and thus expecting him to act that way) right out of the gate. Followed by apathy towards Pyro's feelings to things such as a cure and only caring how it affected their allyship and goals. And finally, apathy towards Pyro's obvious signs of instability and lack of place within the group (alongside general apathy to the point of blindness towards the emotional unraveling of the core vampire group). In fact, Scott only lifts his apathy towards Pyro after Avid dies (one of the signs that he's starting to exchange apathy for feeling and investment) when he tells Pyro that he understands him, relates to him, sees him and is proud of him. But by then, it's far too late and Pyro has already dug his bloody pit into a grave. But that pit was the thing that finally made Scott drop the apathy which Pyro tried to claw through for so much of the series...

(All of which is not exactly better than active malice, but it is a profound aspect of Scott's character arc. Aka Scott's fatal flaw throughout the whole series is his apathy. Thus, him losing someone he cares about (Avid) to a product of his apathy (Pyro) is his narrative consequence for his fatal flaw. Which is why Scott lives at the end of the series; because he discards his fatal flaw and embraces the opposite of apathy: feelings and investment.)
