not to hop in on the Hottest Discourse but:
age gaps aren’t inherently bad between adults, but they are incredibly suspect in instances where one party has significantly more agency and experience due to their age. a thirty year old dating a forty year old, for instance, isn’t all that big a deal. but an eighteen year old should be VERY suspicious of a thirty year old wanting to get with them. they’ve had twelve years to establish themselves as an adult. an eighteen year old has had maybe a few months to do so.
i’m saying this as a person who briefly dated a thirty year old at age 19 (it wasn’t good lol), and also as a person with happily married parents who have a 12 year age gap. the difference is that my mom was in her thirties when she met my dad; she’d had plenty of time to find a career and a name for herself in the world.
stay safe, love urself, try to make good decisions but don’t beat yourself up if you’ve ever been the victim of an unbalanced or abusive relationship
I need yall to understand that healthy 30 year olds look at 19-year-olds and see kids. Not in a demeaning way – but in a way that automatically removes that 19-year-old from romantic consideration. And even if you “look very mature for your age,” a healthy 30 year old will learn you are 19 and back out of that crush at 90 mph no matter how good your contour game is.

Republican lawmaker who dared AOC to come visit coal miners in his constituency gets scared, withdraws offer
Late last month, Rep. Andy Barr [R-KY] “invited” Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to visit the coal miners in his Appalachian district, by way of rebuttal to her brilliant response to the charge that the Green New Deal was a rich, city-person’s luxury, taking no account of working, poor and rural people.
AOC took him up on the invitation, saying “It’s a complete injustice the cancer levels that a lot of these communities are confronting. We have to plan a future for all of our communities, no matter what. Failure to plan is planning to fail and I feel like we’ve been failing Appalachian communities for a very long time and it’s time to turn that ship around.”
Now, Barr has rescinded the invitation, blaming it on her defense of Rep Ilhan Omar, who has been smeared by Republicans and establishment Democrats with the racist slur that she supports Islamic terror. Barr said he was dismayed by her “lack of civility.”
In response, AOC tweeted: “GOP’s getting scared that up close, their constituents will realize I’m fighting harder for their healthcare than their own Reps .”

The one detail that seems to be left out of all these headlines, which is perhaps the most important in understanding Barr’s decision, is that there are no coal miners in his district. He made up complaints from people that don’t exist, then panicked when AOC agreed to meet them.

Some of you hear, “Black women have done the majority of the work both fighting against sexism and racism,” and think, “Black women will liberate us all, and we don’t have to do anything!” instead of, “We need to step up our game so that Black women, some of the most vulnerable people when it comes to racism and sexism (as well as related problems like gentrification), aren’t having to put themselves on the front lines.”

[ID: Cartoon of a light-skinned blind person with sunglasses, a white cane, and a yellow service dog standing next to a sign that says “IMPORTANT NOTICE” in bold red letters. Under this is a wall of black text on a white background, reading:
“I wanted to make people aware... guide dogs haven’t been trained in social distancing and queuing to get in a shop. If you see a guide dog heading straight for the shop door and not joining the queue, that is what they have been trained to do. They’re not being rude or intentionally queue jumping. Also, if you see them walking down the street, remember, they haven’t been trained to social distance, so it is up to us, the sighted people, to give them space. Hope that helps my many guide dog owner friends in these really difficult and challenging times.”

i just wanna say that slurs don’t just “slip out” when they aren’t part of your everyday vocabulary. the worst thing ive ever had slip out at an inappropriate time was an “oh fuck” when i messed up in art class, because i don’t use violent slurs that i have no right to say.
just remember that the next time your friend, or some youtuber, yells out a racist slur when he gets beat at a video game. it’s not the kind of thing that comes out by accident when you never use it usually.

I didn’t wanna have to make another donation post; but my doctors, my partner, and myself all think it would be too risky for me to find work right now. (I have various lung issues and chronic conditions as well as some other un-diagnosed issues like fainting spells, etc.)
Also, feel free to comment if you have good advice about starting to tutor online, because it may be helpful for me once my supplemental unemployment ends, but currently I can’t without losing benefits. ( getting disability would ruin my ability to save money, and is horribly difficult to get on, also )
My partner and I just had to take on huge expenses to move to the city where they have better paying work for her (and myself once things are less dangerous). So, any help is greatly appreciated!!!
( any dumb replies (esp from terfs), etc. get the block… )

COVID-19 has been confirmed to have been diagnosed with two students in my college. I’m living off campus; but for my safety I really cannot work besides online..
I think we need to apply this to older movies as well:
The homophobic gag in that rom com,
the racist side character in that coming of age story,
don’t just brush it of as a product of the time, acknowledge that it was bad then and remains a terrible aspect of the film today

“ young women’s criticism of the (violent) misogyny in “classic” lit should be taken 100% seriously. if a teen girl says the rapey overtones of 1984 ruin the whole book for her, she’s not less intellectual. this goes double for girls refusing to read classics that are misogynistic”]
