I think my favorite thing about iwtv/vampire chronicles is just how insane every is about each other. Louis is a sad goth girl who falls fast and hard for a blaring red flag so he marries lestat after watching him kill two priests and then yearns for him despite their marriage being a total dumpster fire. He sees Armand kill a girl on stage and thinks. Oh that's cruel and evil (affectionate). Finds out he killed his daughter and stays in a fucked up bdsm marriage for another 70 years. Armand wants to consume Lestat soooo bad. He also hates him so bad. But he cut off his lover's hands for him <3. But he also threw him off a tower. Lestat thinks Armand is batshit insane and a menace but also like. It's Armand his theatre friend Armand, his beloved (beloathed<3) Armand. Both of them stalk Louis bc his jewel-like sorrow and tumultuous, powerful love has bewitched them body and soul.

can’t believe i have to say this because i assumed that the inherent complexity of asoiaf meant that its fanbase would be at least marginally intelligent, but grrm using words like “boy”, “pet”, and “whore” to describe satin’s relationship to jon through the eyes of the other brothers of the nights watch is them expressing their opinion of how satin got his position of stewardship, that he slept his way up the ranks because that’s all he’s good for and all he knows how to do. it’s an observation of the preconceived biases that persist within the brotherhood despite the fact that they’re supposed to shed their previous identities upon joining the night’s watch and build their new reputations purely based on merit. jon echoing these words is a further recognition of the hypocrisy of the other members of the night’s watch and an acknowledgement of all the shit that satin goes through, rather than an appropriation of them.

like, can you not identify the very clear power imbalance here? they aren’t being used as pet names to fit some degradation kink, they’re literally used to degrade. it’s the brothers refusing to acknowledge satin’s potential strengths because of their prejudices whilst ignoring the fact that, hey, they’re all at the wall, all of them have done bad shit. but at least they’re not like this pretty boy, flouncing north from his whorehouse to seduce his way into the lap of luxury, right?
