Remembering when I recommended one of my friends RGU and she said “I basically already know what the plot is” and then I asked her “do you know about all the incest?” and she was super surprised.

I find it strange how this shows reputation among more general audiences is “sword lesbian show” when in actuality it’s “allegorical deconstruction of patriarchy, gender roles, sexual violence, and incestuous abuse show also featuring sword lesbians”. Like when I watched it I sort of knew what was coming, but I was still completely caught off guard by how much it got under my skin. It’s strange that this show doesn’t really have a reputation for being super fucked up when other shows like Madoka Magica do have that reputation but are significantly less disturbing.

Its not only among general audience but among creators too. Almost always creators who reference utena do either a sword pull or lesbians and they call it a day. Its like Utena is only that to them. I dare to say that sword pulls and lesbians are secondary. Utena is first and foremost story about escaping abuse

The sword pull can be viewed as an allegory for perpetuating the cycle of abuse too. Removing a part of what makes the person you supposedly hold dear to use for your own benefit. Which is ironic because Utena only starts fighting to protect Anthy in the first place, so this adds even more layers of hypocrisy to her actions.

Yeah, the sword pull looks very cool and iconic and all, but in the story it is heavily associated with having control over another person and often has a negative context with all the unhealthy relationships going on in this show. It often represents the duelists' power over Anthy in a very dehumanizing way. And in the Black Rose arc, the sword pulls have a strong sexual assault subtext. One could read some of the sword pulls more positively than others, but I'd say they're not generally treated as a good thing.

In the movie it's treated as positive character development when Utena refuses to pull Anthy's sword.
