Hello - welcome to Cardiff Central - let me relieve you of your bacon sandwich or any other food you have. by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: The seagulls at Cardiff Central station have a certain air of confidence and really want you to know it's their station. On numerous occasions I've seen one seize the opportunity to relieve a passenger of their bacon roll when they unwittingly placed it on a bench.

Night time on the Coryton branch by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: Class 143 Pacer DMU 143624 stands at Coryton on 19th October 2017 ready to work the 2V55 2115 Coryton to Radyr 'City Line' service. We had gone to Coryton to see the Railhead Treatment Train but due to late running it went directly up the Rhymney Valley Line. Often criticised for their design and age, the Pacer units nevertheless continue to provide the backbone of many train services across the UK, including the south Wales Valley Lines network.
Out of the mist: Pontcanna Fields, Cardiff by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: The tree-lined path which runs from Blackweir Bridge through Pontcanna Fields is an ever changing scene. With the settled weather Cardiff has experienced for much of January there have been some misty days, when the line of trees disappears into the distance.
Dusk in the park: Blackweir Bridge, Cardiff by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: Blackweir Bridge in Cardiff - which spans the River Taff, links Blackweir Fields and Pontcanna Fields. On weekday mornings and evenings it is busy with commuting pedestrians and cyclists and dog walkers. The bridge is on my commute from Riverside to the University Hospital of Wales. I never tire of seeing the river here and its weir - the changing light and weather means that it never looks the same two days running. Tonight the calm water and clear skies made for beautiful reflection.
Concrete lines by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: A walk from Trefforest railway station to the University of South Wales' Glyntaff campus took me past and then under the flyover which carries the main A470 road along the valley. The low winter sun picked out the lines of the concrete walls.
Cardiff Central by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: Arriva Trains Wales' 1W96 1716 Cardiff Central to Holyhead waits departure time from Cardiff on 3rd January 2017. Driving van trailer (DVT) 82307 leads the train, with Class 67 locomotive 67010 at the rear. The train will reverse at Chester, with the loco leading the train for the remainder of the journey to Holyhead. Of all the trains I photograph at Cardiff Central I think this must be one of my favourites. It is nice to see loco-hauled trains, and the MkIII carriages on this service look smart - both inside and out. I have always wanted to travel First Class on this service and enjoy the cooked breakfast (soutbound) or dinner (northbound) which is cooked in the restaurant car. One day!
Cardiff Central's new Platform 8 opens by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: Class 143 Pacer DMUs 143608 and 143606 stand at Cardiff Central's new Platform 8 with the 2Y24 1246 Cardiff Central to Barry Island service today on Monday 2nd January 2017. I believe this was the first day that the platform had been used for passenger trains. it provides an additional west bound platform for Arriva Trains Wales' Valley Lines services (though it has bi-directional signalling).

Branch line diesel: rounding the curve at Reedham by Jeremy Segrott Via Flickr: Direct Rail Service (DRS) Class 37 locomotive 37419 eases its train round the 20mph speed restriction as it approaches the swing bridge over the River Yare whilst working the 2J80 1455 Norwich to Lowestoft service. The train is formed of a pair of MkII carriages, with 37419 at the front, and 37405 at the rear. Greater Anglia hires the locomotives and carriages (known as the 'short set') to cover for a shortage of DMUs. The Norwich-Lowestoft still has the feel of a traditional branch line, with its semaphore signalling and signal boxes at most stations.

A Cross Country Class 220 Voyager DEMU has just arrived at platform 3 with the 1V51 1007 Manchester Piccadilly to Bristol Temple Meads service. Further along the platform (which becomes platform 4), Great Western's Railway's 1C45 1319 departure for Exeter St Davids awaits departure time.
