Let’s consider Endeavour

Endeavour Morse, portrayed by Shaun Evans:

* in the pilot episode, he fainted and later experienced intense emotional pain (episode 1.00 “Pilot”);

* in the first season, he was slashed with a knife with some brief aftermath (episode 1.02 ″Fugue”), then shot in the hip but not really shown or appreciabile (episode 1.04 “Home”);

* in the second season, he experienced some PTSD after episode 1.04 (thanks @alipeeps) plus been tied to a chair and beaten up with some brief aftermath, then roughly fallen from one floor to another with a brief treatment on the field (episode 2.01 “Trove" and 2.02 “Nocturne”);

* in the third season, he was hit at his head and knocked out (episode 3.02 ″Arcadia"), then hit at his face and taken hostage (episode 3.04 “Coda”);

* in the fourth season, he was drugged and experienced scary hallucinations with hospitalization (episode 4.02 ″Canticle”);

* in the fifth season, he was into an arson and almost passed out, coughing and rescued and helped walking (episode 5.02 “Cartouche”); assaulted with knife at his throat and almost choked, then under gunfire and hunted, shot and flash bloody wound at his head (episode 5.04 “Colours”);  repeatedly threatened, assaulted and almost strangled to death with a garrota, bruise on his throat, upset (episode 5.05 ″Quartet”);

Fifth season ended, let’s hope for more Morse whump in the next season! Isn’t time for Morse to be properly shot and shown detailed treatment and aftermath?

Fevers in Warm Weather Prompts

1.) Character A thinks they’re just feeling warm because of the high temperature around them but they’re really developing a fever. They only become aware that it’s a fever when they start having chills and feeling cold. (Are they alone? Why do they have a fever? From contagion? Unlucky summer cold? Are they stuck inside a building without AC? On a walk?) 2.) Character A thinks they have a fever, but Character B is convinced they’re fine and thinks they’re just being a wimp because it’s hot out and keeps brushing their complaints about feeling poorly off. (How badly does Character B feel when they find out about Character A’s fever? Are they filled with guilt? Indifference? Joy from seeing them suffer? Do they even find out at all? Does Character B only realize the problem when someone else shows up and notices Character A suffering?) 3.) Classic: Character A thinks it’s freezing out when it’s really hot, alerting Character B to how unwell they really are. (Are they in a situation where Character A can leave easily, or are they obligated to sit through an event/activity? Is Character A in denial? How Does Character B react? Do they freak out? Go mom/dad mode? Does Character A start to develop more symptoms that makes taking care of them more difficult? Delirium? More emotional than normal?) 4.) Character A tries to leave their place wearing long sleeves and jeans even though it’s sweltering out, and Character B knows immediately what’s wrong and puts them on lockdown. (Is Character B super reluctant to have to babysit Character A? Or are they super happy to get to be taking care of their vulnerable crush? Somewhere in-between? Are they siblings? Partners? Friends?)

Also “fever.” SO MUCH DISAPPOINTMENT when there’s no elevated body temperature just “oh, spring fever!” “oh, cabin fever!” NO I WANT A STORY OF ACTUAL FEVER.

Things I like

Thick scarfs, sweaters or pajamas.

Red noses.

Handkerchiefs.

Wet, desperate sneezes.

Hitching. Like several seconds of it, as it gets more desperate.

That general “sick” look, glassy eyes, messy hair. Kudos if the person attire is on wrong, missed buttons, mismatched socks.

Holding a mug/cup with two hands.

Sniffling.

Caretaking, especially when the sick person feels guilty about their partner worrying over them.

Sick person being embarrassed after sneezing. Blushing a plus.

I love a caretaker soothing a person with a terrible sore throat, or a cough, or no voice, telling them it’s okay to be quiet, the caretaker knows what they need.

”Shhh, I’m here.“

“Water? or tea? Just shake your head, don’t talk.”

“Don’t apologize, you’re making the cough worse.”

“Hush, just breathe, nice and slow, that’s it.”

before I go to sleep here are two scenarios I’ve been thinking about tonight:

- the captain of the watch of some fantasy setting town doing rounds while miserably ill in the snow and sleet, and when he stops into the pub to make sure all is well the owner forces him to sit down and have a hot cider and a bowl of soup

- someone in the forest meets up with a shady character to do some shady dealings, but then they hear someone else sneeze from behind the trees and they realize someone had been evesdropping… later around town they happen to overhear that exact same sneeze in the crowded square and manage to track down the spy by following their sneezes through the streets

nothing worse than looking for fics by typing “sick” in the search bar and having over half of them turn up with the author like “i was sick while i wrote this”!!!!!!!!!!!! ummmm thats great for you but unless the fic is all about your cold honey i dont wanna hear it!!!!

even worse: results for “ill” are 90% the writer forgetting the apostrophe in “I’ll”

or when the description is like “he was sick and tired of blah blah blah so he decided to do something about it”

Or when looking for new snz content and you get so many results of “nothing to sneeze at”…But…why isn’t it?  What if we want them to?  GIVE ME MY SNZ!

Protip: If you’re just doing a Google search, instead of just putting in “ill” put in something along the lines of (”feeling ill” OR “felt ill” OR “was ill” OR “is ill”) which will bring you things with any of those phrases that are in double-quotes, and will filter out most of the stuff with the writer just forgetting the apostrophe in “I’ll”.  It’s a lot more typing, but I’d rather type a few more words than dig through mounds of stuff that doesn’t interest me.  I’ve been doing this with most of the keywords for this stuff…put in the verbs that the words you really want are most likely to go with in the context you want to see them in, and it’ll filter out a lot of the crap that has nothing to do with the snz/i&i content.

Note: I know fic archives have different syntaxes for their searches than Google.  If you want to use the Google syntax and just want to look at AO3 or FF.Net, add “site:archiveofourown.org/works” or “site:fanfiction.net/s/” to the end of the search string in Google and it’ll restrict the search to just that site.  It won’t show you things that are locked to logged in users on AO3 (don’t know if FF.Net has anything like that) but it’ll bring up anything that’s publicly viewable.

Chills are such and underappreciated symptom tbh.

Characters shaking so bad that they end up spilling their drink all over themselves and needing somebody to hold their glass for them.

Or involuntarily waking up their sleeping partner because their teeth are chattering so much and no amount of blankets can ease their suffering.

Or snuggling up to their s/o in an attempt to steal their warmth despite being burning hot themselves.

Just. Chills.

Sickness Sentence Starters

coughing sicknario

Stoic sickie’s been coughing for days and keeps dismissing concern and sympathy. They’re finally starting to improve a little - when they start coughing the congestion starts moving at once rather than it taking long painful dry coughs before anything comes loose. Someone says they sound horrible, and the sickie rasps that they’re better, it doesn’t hurt to cough now. And the other person is like AHA so it DID hurt to cough before?

I love like… slow burn sickfics. when you know a character is getting sick but it’s not super obvious and comes on reeeal slow. every once in a while it’ll mention a cough or a headache or gradually progressing dizziness, but it’s understated and no one, including the character, thinks much of it. until you reach the point where it starts getting really bad and the character just crumples in front of everyone

Internal struggle: imagining two people together in bed, but being unable to decide whether it’s hotter if the little spoon or the big has to sneeze.

They both have their merits. Big spoon could have their nose tickled by little spoon’s hair (hottttt) and they can stifle the sneeze against little spoon’s neck/shoulder (double hottttt). However, little spoon would curl in on themselves to sneeze (awwww) and also they get to be cuddled and held which instantly frames the whole thing as h/c and/or caretaking (double awwww). So I’m just really torn on this whole thing and will have to settle for “why not both?”
