I know some of you are into yawning. But have you really thought about how close it is to sneezing?

There's the catalyst. Being tired, being rundown, maybe even sick. You're body is being pushed to a limit.

Then there's the trigger. An itch in the ears, a tingle that tempts your reflexes, your body wants to shrug off the exhaustion, like a chill when it's cold.

The reaction happens. Your lungs take a big, satisfying gulp of air, and it wants to push that itch out, scratch, and massage at that place between the ears. Its the only way to reach it. Eyes water, nostrils flare, the face crumples with it as you can't help but Yaawn wide.

And best of all? It's contagious. Someone else sees it, and they feel that itch too, and no matter how hard they try to ignore it, just the idea of getting to scratch themselves makes their own nose start to flare and their jaw start to quiver open.

They can try to stifle. How horribly unsatisfying it is, how silly someone looks as their watery eyes squint and their lips part just enough to see the tips of their teeth before they swallow it back. They're so obviously exhausted, they just can't help but yawn...

someone getting watery-eyed and sniffly as soon as they go anywhere old. Libraries, antique shops, secondhand stores. Guaranteed one sneeze after ten minutes of rummaging. Even just looking at dusty old books or cobwebbed clocks gets their nose twitching.

Hm character with magnetic or lightning or electricity powers getting sick and that manifests as them becoming magnetized. Perhaps an android or robot or Warforged character even. Just thinkin about it.

A has been left home sick in bed all day nursing a truly ghastly deep-winter head cold. their dog has barely left their side, very dutifully looking after them and giving them all the cuddles they could need in the absence of their partner, B, who’d left for work early that morning.

B, however, comes home that evening to find A laid up in the midst of what looks like a mountain of soggy, thoroughly used tissues, sneezing their head off, cheeks red and wind-bitten, looking chilled to the bone and sounding 10x worse than when they’d left them.

the dog had heard their key turn in the door and had ran to greet them, tail wagging. their fur is wet and slightly matted with what B must assume to be the pouring rain they’d just hauled ass between the car and the front door to get out of as quickly as possible.

when A’s done with their fit, they look up at B, vaguely guilty. B lets out a little long-suffering disapproving huff.

B had told them earlier not to bother; they’d walk him/her themselves when they got home.

A swears it wasn’t raining when they left, they were feeling a little bit better, and it was only meant to be a quick jaunt to tide the poor thing over after being cooped up all day. he/she was going stir crazy and starting to get antsy and—

A’s interrupted by another damp, miserable sneeze.

Anyway you folks do you know what's hot? Hitches that catch. All sorts of marvellous hd-! and hhit...! and h'gh!! sounds. Like yes gasping and panting is choice already but just that extra extra audibly desperate edge telling you that someone is really really ready to explode.

I just think its really need to see a stoic character teetering on the edge of their breaking point. The team watches them creep closer and closer to losing it, but they never fully take the plunge, pushing their limits further and further. The team wonders if they even CAN get the character to open up to them.

And when they do break, its catastrophic.

When people say “I’ve been fighting a cold all week”/“I’ve been trying not to get sick all week” as a means of announcing their efforts have failed… that is hot.

I still go feral over the whole concept of two characters in a library sitting across from each other, one blows dust off an old book, and the dust clous just cartoonishly settles under the others nose

More and more dust visibly getting sucked in with every irritated sniffle, the one with the book nervously telling them to keep it down and keep it in

We all love the trope of lone traveller seeking shelter in bad weather from a secluded cabin or small house, and they're also sick with a cold, fever.

But every now and then I toy with the idea that it's the host who is sick. Providing shelter, perhaps somewhat suspicious, or perhaps annoyed by the uninvited guest, but doing the right thing anyway... but also they also have a cold or such coming and the guest ends up trying their forehead, finding it warm.

Looks like the traveller, or someone on the run, something like that, needs to take care of their host.

Thinking about a character living alone, and illness making it hit home just how desperately lonely they feel. Just absolutely aching for company to take the edge off the misery... Instead, they're just by themself, making their congestion worse by crying, and there's not even anyone they can ask to pick upmore tissues

Okay but this is giving me ideas....imagine this character, miserable and rapidly running out of tissues, orders a bunch of cold supplies on a delivery app. And when they go to answer the door for the delivery, standing there all red-nosed and leaky-faced, that the person doing the delivery is someone they've recently been on a few dates with....or an old colleague they had a crush on... and maybe that delivery person is like "oh gosh, you don't look so good...do you want some company?"

feeling feral abt thermometers today.

🌡️ someone doing back-to-back readings with an oral thermometer because there's no way the first one was correct (it was).

🌡️ Person One using an infrared forehead scanning thermometer on Person Two, who's fallen asleep at their desk/sitting up/on the couch. Person Two basically never naps during the day unless something is wrong.

🌡️ someone desperately hoping that the thermometer says they have a fever. Having an actual tangible illness is the only way they can justify feeling so awful and wanting a day off. Maybe they try to fudge the numbers on the reading.
