“Catching feelings” and colds alike, perhaps at the same time, perhaps from the same person

“Lovesick” in the truest of senses

Being plagued by the thought of someone, restless with fever through the night

Describing love as something contagious, something that spreads from one person to another just because they were close, and it affects how they feel emotionally and physically for a period of time, manifesting with different symptoms of varying intensities for different people

Something vulnerable that makes one feel fragile and exposed and strange and overwhelmed and sensitive and tender and aching and lonely and yearning for someone to be close to them

Something that’s outside of their control that they cannot simply choose to rid themselves of instantaneously, that instead demands a pitiful process of recovery involving little rituals they’ve used time and time again or that were introduced by loved ones

Heartbreak and illness both being most tolerable when bundled up in blankets, resting plenty, consuming comfort foods and drinks, having a tissue box or two at one’s side, watching comfort shows/movies, and being soothed and taken care of and supported by sympathetic loved ones

And then it can be an even truer mixture of Sick and Lovesick if this is happening when A’s with the person they love, B. While A mistakes their symptoms as butterflies, B Doesn’t and perhaps comments on it and shows concern and feels them for fever,,,,,, A might get extra flustered because wait wha did they notice how head-over-heels they are right now? And flustered from the tender forehead feeling too (rest in fucking pieces of they have the kink or a related one)

Maybe B clocks it when A doesn’t just BECAUSE A is so out of it from love and fever. Maybe it’s because B doesn’t KNOW that A loves them, so there’s no reason to misattribute it to those feelings. Orrr maybe B loves them too and is attentive enough with them to notice that they’re unwell and cares enough to confirm their suspicions and take care of them. 🥺🥺🥺

Fevers in places that are already either way too hot or way too cold for comfort 🙏

In a building or a vehicle that has the A/C cooling all the way up. Outside on a really chilly night. In a drafty house in winter. Woefully underdressed for the climate. They were already shivering a little from the fever, and they’d probably shiver a little in this situation even if they didn’t have a fever, so in combination they’re shivering enough it’s making their teeth chatter. It’s sapping every last bit of energy they had, really quickly and efficiently.

Dead of summer. Vehicle or building with broken A/C, or just A/C turned way too low. On a hike in the sun. In long sleeves or long pants when it’s too hot for something like that. Overworking and feeling way too physically warm from it. Maybe they can even tolerate the heat just fine normally, maybe they can’t, but either way it’s putting them far over the edge and it’s making them flushed and sweaty and nauseous. Just maximum possible discomfort from this fever.

Hey so I know we All Know This but I will NEVER be over a character being feverish and delirious and making No sense. I will never be over a glittery-eyed, shivering, distressed character weakly gripping another's arm and asking them questions they don't know the answer to, and probably don't mean anything at all. I will never be over characters calling out for people either long gone or right next to them, but unrecognizable in their delirium. I will never be over a character crying in frustration and fear over something in their head they can't explain to whoever is helping them, and all they can do in return is stroke their hair and shush them gently.

I pay a lot of lip service to this without ever really dwelling on it, but something I LOVE in sickfic is like the "day 0" of an illness where a character is having experiences that COULD be signs of an illness or could just be one-off biological oddities (fatigue, headache, sore throat, colder than usual, etc). I just think it's neat

Musing on this again. I especially love it when the thought "maybe I'm getting sick" just never even crosses their mind. It's a headache, or a sour stomach, or "just allergies," so they don't even think twice about powering through and going about their day. It'll be better by tomorrow, right?

This is oddly specific but I love when a caretaker is so attentive they make tea with the purpose of easing the sick one's specific symptoms:

"I made you chamomile tea. It should help you sleep."

"I hear that mint is good for nausea."

"The ginger should help boost your immune system."

"I know this one is your favourite. I hope I made it right."

"I added honey to help your sore throat."

"I figured a nice hot drink should help keep you warm."

in honor of me really not feeling well, here are some Thoughts:

• “i’m worried about your temperature.”

• “i know it hurts, but you have to let me look at it. please.”

• “i know you don’t want to, but i need you to eat something.”

• “you’re even hotter than you were last night.”

• shushing them as they try to talk/sneeze around the thermometer in their mouth

• “oh, honey. that’s a really high fever.”

shout out to "i need to sit down" btw. shout out to the whumpees who cannot catch their breath, whether panic or dread or pain or exhaustion keeps them heaving and gasping for air, who whisper "i can't" as they slump to the floor. shout out to whumpees only held up by teammates, trying their best to look strong, but reaching a point where all they can say is "down, please, let me down--". do you see the vision
