Lunar Apollon and Solar Artemis
So it is possible that Apollon had lunar aspects and Artemis had solar ones. I think this is kinda neat and I wanted to share it with y’all. Lunar Apollon Apollon has the epithet noumenios which means of the new moon. “ Apollo who sometimes in called Noumenios, “He of the New Moon” (Works and Days 770). “ (Graff 17) This could refer to the Noumenia festival or it could refer to the new moon or both of the two. Otherwise I wanted to mention it because it is really cool. Also in the Homeric Hymn to Artemis (Hymn 9) he is mentioned as god of the silver bow. Solar Artemis
Artemis does not have a direct reference to the sun but she does have the epithet “phosphoros” which means bringer of light and her bow is mentioned as being golden. “ [1] I sing of Artemis, whose shafts are of gold, who cheers on the hounds, the pure maiden, shooter of stags, who delights in archery, own sister to Apollo with the golden sword. Over the shadowy hills and windy peaks she draws her golden bow “ (Homeric Hymn 23 To Artemis) “[1] Muse, sing of Artemis, sister of the Far-shooter, the virgin who delights in arrows, who was fostered with Apollo. She waters her horses from Meles deep in reeds, and swiftly drives her all-golden chariot through Smyrna to vine-clad Claros where Apollo, god of the silver bow, sits waiting for the far-shooting goddess who delights in arrows. And so hail to you, Artemis, in my song and to all goddesses as well. Of you first I sing and with you I begin; now that I have begun with you, I will turn to another song.“ (Homeric Hymn 9 To Artemis) Under the tab is my works cited and all of the sources I consulted but did not quote, if you want me to send them to you, my asks are open
