Hey gamers! Say you are in a fandom for a game where the protagonist model is customizable but the default preset (Jane Shepard in Mass Effect, Garrett/Marian Hawke in DA2, the white Dragonborn Dark Urge in BG3) is commonly featured in marketing as shorthand for the player, and very widely used by fans in their playthroughs and transformative works. The preset has become so mainstream that a lot of fans approach this iteration of the protagonist as a canon character, on the same level as NPCs.

Now imagine that a fellow fan has decided to actually make use of the customization options available to them, and their protagonist now has features that differ wildly from the default preset.

Does it feel to you like they are replacing a canon character with an OC/Mary Sue?

#in instances like that the character itself still has variations that are chosen by the player #so i dont think it really matters -what- the character looks like #bc shepard is still shepard no matter what they look like or what their name is #if the devs wanted a canon character the options wouldn't be available as they are and options are meant to be picked #having nice default options is great for people who dont really care about customization and having options is great for people who do #especially when a game depends on variety and branching narratives

One thing I have been known to complain about re: red carpet fashion is monochrome looks made with very plain fabric, and how I would like them so much more if they had some interesting texture. Well, some people did listen to me!
