I'm sorry but the delena hate is so forced. Damon obviously didn't like Elena in s1 because she looks like Katherine and Damon was inlove with Katherine but when him and Elena got to know each other better he realised she was nice and stuff like that and when Katherine came back and told Damon that she never loved him he started to like Elena and got closer with her and he waited for her to get over Stefan and waited for her to like him back and then they were the best couple Elena literally went on drugs when she thought he was dead to hallucinate him back anyways this is why delena will ALWAYS be better than stelena

I think about Damon force-feeding Elena his blood in season 2 so she doesn't die-die, and I get it. Not only because she could've died for real and he wasn't willing to risk it, but because the one time he left her alone after meeting her she did almost die and would've hadn't Stefan intervined. I think Damon thinks about how he could've stopped the accident and save Elena and her parents a lot.

1.18 After Stefan loses control and vamps out at an...inopportune moment, we cut to Elena answering the Gilbert home front door: “Oh good," she says, sounding relieved, "you’re here.”  “You ask, I come,” Damon tells her, “I’m easy like that.” She puts a finger to her lips and indicates that Jeremy is within earshot, and starts to head upstairs. Damon raises his voice: “No, Elena, I will not go to your bedroom with you!” Jeremy just rolls his eyes. Damon enters Elena's bedroom and says, “Ahhh, just like I remembered.” “Stop messing around,” Elena tells him. He flops onto her bed and starts playing with her teddy bear. They talk about Stefan. “He’s not himself, Damon,” Elena says.  “Well, maybe the problem is he’s spent too long not being himself,” Damon says, then fishes a bra out of Elena’s drawer and adds “Ooooh.” She snatches it away from him, says seriously, “Please don’t make me sorry for asking you.” “It is what it is, Elena,” Damon answers, now stealing a photo from her mirror frame. “The Stefan you know is good behavior Stefan. Reign it in Stefan.  Fight against his nature to an annoyingly obsessive level…Stefan. But if you think there’s not another part to this, then you have not been paying attention.”  She steps in close, takes her picture back. “He’s not you,” Elena tells him, “not even close.” “Well he doesn’t wanna be me,” Damon counters, “that doesn’t mean deep down that he’s not.” 

1.13 After Damon's impromptu dinner party with Jenna and the Gilberts, Damon and Elena are cleaning up in the kitchen and Damon stops in the middle of the floor so that Elena runs right into him. “Don’t do that,” Elena says. “What?” says Damon, innocent.  “You know what, that move was deliberate!” “Well, yeah, I was deliberately trying to get to the - sink!” She just rolls her eyes. “Speaking of Stefan,” Damon says nonsensically, “where is he? He’s missing family night, which I am enjoying immensely.” Elena just sighs. Damon asks, “Is it real?” “Is what real?” she asks. “This renewed sense of brotherhood. Can I trust him?” “Yes, you can trust him,” Elena says.  Damon vamp-speeds over to her, she turns to face him and he repeats intently, “Can I trust him?” “I’m wearing vervain, Damon, it’s not going to work,” she says. “I’m not compelling you!” says Damon, “I just want you to answer me, honestly.” “Of course you can,” Elena says. “There was a time when I trusted him more than anyone,” he tells Elena. “Trust breeds trust,” says Elena, “you have to give it to get it.” “Are you lecturing me?” he asks. “Do you need to be lectured?” she counters. “I just want her back, I'm sure you can understand that,” Damon says. “I can understand that you would do anything for her,” Elena answers. “Then you understand what I will do if anyone gets in my way,” Damon tells her.

1.14 With the help of two Bennet witches, the tomb is finally open. Damon grabs Elena and pulls her in with him so they’ll have to let him back out, but Elena says that she gets it, and agrees to go with him freely. But of course, Grams and Bonnie have set up the spell so humans can get in and out, but all vampires are trapped inside. Damon goes off to look for Katherine, Elena gets fed on by a tomb vamp and Stefan rushes in to save her. Elena convinces Bonnie and Grams that they have to actually open the tomb, they have to get Stefan out—and they have to get Damon out too. “We promised him, both of us,” she says to Stefan. So the witches start actually trying to dismantle the spell, and Stefan goes to find Damon and pull him out. Damon, meanwhile, has looked all over and hasn’t found Katherine. He’s on the edge of a breakdown, repeating “She’s not here, she’s not here, she’s not here.”  Stefan appears and tries to tell him that he has to get out of the tomb before he’s trapped there forever, but Damon won’t hear him. “It’s not worth spending all of eternity in here, she’s not worth it!” Stefan shouts.  Damon tears out of his grasp and says “No!” But then Elena says his name: “Damon!” She went back for him, and now she looks at him and says, “Please.” And that’s enough: he pulls himself together and follows her out of the tomb. Outside, she walks up to him and hugs him, says “I’m sorry.”

1.11 Georgia is in the rearview, and Elena asks Damon, “So, why did you bring me with you?” He answers, “Well, you’re not the worst company in the world, Elena. You should give yourself more credit.” She kind of rolls her eyes and says, “Seriously.” Damon says, “I dunno. You were there in the road, all damsel-in-distress-like…and I knew it’d piss off Stefan.” Elena smiles. “And,” he says, with a grin, “you’re not the worst company in the world, Elena.” She tells him, “I used to be more fun.” He says, reassuringly, “You did okay.” After a beat, she points out: “I saved your life.” “I know,” he says. She smiles smugly and says, “And don’t you forget it.”

We didn’t see the true beauty of Damon and Elena till Season 6. They matured and got through so much shit together by this point. And when Damon wanted to be human with her really nailed the growth of their relationship. Him desiring the chance to grow old with Elena was very tender, especially how they presented it. He knows that there’s a chance they might not work as humans, but that doesn’t matter. Because the smallest chance they will is still more than enough he could ever ask for.

It’s hard to see something like this and then still wonder “Why do people like Delena?”.
