I didn't notice this video (a short film about the preference towards sons over daughters in rural Fujian, i.e. giving daughters disdainful names, denying them schooling, and forcing marriages) was made with AI until like a minute in. Apparently AI can generate Hokkien now (the video uses both accented Mandarin and Hokkien). It's also pretty consistent between shots, although I spotted some inconsistencies. The fact that it was AI was a little unexpected to me, probably because in the West, the type of person who would create this type of short film would also never use AI for it. Until now, the few AI videos I saw on Douyin were mostly meme-y videos or absurd, overly dramatic short dramas.

AI videos are labelled on Douyin, but I still haven't made a habit of checking the label immediately, so I usually only see the label after I've already noticed an AI quality to the video, although I've been tricked before (I think it was a parrot video). My point of reference for AI videos is those Youtube ads for AI vertical short dramas, though, so I'm not all that great at spotting them.

AI is viewed much more positively in China (84% of Chinese respondents agreed with "Products and services using artificial intelligence make me excited" in 2025), and in some polls, China views AI the most positively/least negatively out of all countries polled. Compare this to the West, where 30-40% of Europe and the anglosphere view AI positively. This could be partly because physical labour is still a large portion of China's workforce, or that Doubao (China's most popular AI assistant) is kinda dumb (from what I've heard), so it's less of a threat, but that's speculation. I don't live in China, so I can't say how it is IRL, but that number is definitely reflected on Douyin.

For instance, people candidly talk about their use of Doubao for anything and everything, and often use it to generate images to post in Douyin comments. People commenting under AI videos also pretty much only do so to express shock at the capabilities of AI, and I see pretty much no pushback on the actual use of AI. AI does get brought up a lot under non-AI videos, though, mostly "I can't believe it's not AI!" and the like. One comment I see a lot under process videos is: "In a time when AI is popular, there are still older generations that persevere in making things by hand."

Whenever I do see people concerned about AI, their concerns are pretty much limited to employment, the uncanniness of AI-generated content, and that the ease of generating AI content squeezes out real creators. On the other hand, comments under the video linked above talk about how OP is a talented director (prompting the AI), that the common people creating short films about social issues like this is what AI should be used for, and that "this is what high quality looks like".

I guess I don't really have an actual point, just musing on the difference between attitudes. Obviously I'm not going to post anything AI (unless it's by mistake), so this kind of lets you all get an idea of what I'm wading through here.

something I’ve noticed in fandoms lately is a lack of… object permanence? perspective? Just reacting to each episode/chapter of something as if it’s final & whatever plot line they dislike is the status quo forever? like…… have a tiny bit of patience

I kinda understand because a lot of franchises lately have ended in shoddy and poorly thought out ways, but tbh either have some faith in your fav show or just write fanfic

Tony's Chocolonely does not ensure a living wage for cocoa workers in West Africa (see 2020 report by Voice Network).

Food Empowerment Project maintains an updated list of chocolate brands they recommend based on the following standards:

transparency about the country of origin for cocoa

if sourced from Western Africa, the workers must own the companies/be in charge of the profits from their labor (this standard is because child labor and slavery have been widely documented for decades in this area)

if sourced from Brazil, the workers must own the company and/or be in charge of the profits from their labor, or the company must be going above and beyond to support the workers and their families (this standard is because "child labor and slavery only recently have been documented in cocoa in Brazil" and they are "giving Brazilian companies that are trying to address the issue by supporting the workers and their families the benefit of the doubt.")

this isn't perfect, obviously, but it is much more grounded in the rights of workers than the various certifications (e.g. Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, etc.) you'll see on product packaging

I think it should be noted that the Food Empowerment Project specifically only lists companies making "at least one vegan chocolate product" and that they only ask about the companies' vegan chocolates specifically. Their list is not an exhaustive resource for every type of chocolate.

Before I found that link I was curious as to why I didn't see any Norwegian manufacturers on their list(which makes sense now, as their chocolates are almost exclusively milk chocolate) and looked up where our companies source their chocolate from and found Nidar gets theirs from the Rainforest Alliance and Freia from Cocoa Life, both of which have been under scrutiny for not preventing child labour and not paying farmers a living wage among other things. So it appears Norwegian chocolate is out of the ethical picture.

I stated this in the comments of the post already, but it’d probably be better to add it as a reblog, so it’s more visible and doesn’t need to be restated by anyone else in the future.

So, Tony’s allied with Barry Callebut to get its cocoa. Barry Callebut is one of the biggest chocolate companies in the world, and it is unethical, obviously. This led to Tony’s revealing in February 2022 that 1701 child laborers were in their supply chain. Barry Callebut had over 21K at the time. Both of those numbers have risen, and Tony’s has outright admitted they don’t give a fuck about child labor laws when asked about it, content to let children to continue farming their cocoa instead of actually doing the activism they claim to do. About a week ago, Tony’s joined Barry, Nestle and Ferrero in pushing against the reinstatement of important EUDR deforestation legislations. Under that regulation that they pushed against, they would’ve had to be more transparent about their supply chains for their more key ingredients - So Tony’s is lobbying against the exact thing they claim to stand for. “Do it scared” “do it alone” are all great tips, but my biggest takeaway from therapy is do it messy. This is especially true if you’re getting out of a burnout, which I experience often. Literally just do it messy. You don’t need to pick the perfect trail to walk, the perfect playlist to listen to, whatever the fuck it is. You don’t need to have a meticulous to do list and wake up at the exact time you planned and drink the exact amount of water you planned to drink. Like the biggest thing for people like me to remember is sometimes it’s okay to do it messy. Put on a random yt workout and just get it done in sweats. Do 5 minutes of a daunting task and go from there. Sometimes just getting up is a win during intense burnouts or depressive funks. Literally just do it messy.
