A lot of the modern health mania out there would have everyone believe that the only way to be healthy is to give up carbs completely like on the Atkins diet, but we know that this is just not true, much less realistic! Our modern life is saturated in carbohydrates, and completely eliminating them from our diets is not only challenging in terms of finding yummy foods to fill us up, but it’s also expensive as well.
Of course, it’s true that carbohydrates break down into sugars and can mess with insulin levels. The more simple the carbs, the more starchy they are (bread/cakes/sugary foods), the more they mess with metabolism and blood sugar.
But not all carbs are bad as the Atkins diet might suggest. For example, grains like quinoa are known to have anti-inflammatory properties, fiber, and protein, not to mention amino acids - all really good for your health.
As a mother of 3, it would be a nightmare to rid my home of all bread, snacks, etc, and I’m certainly not alone. Healthy eating is important for the entire family, but we all can’t afford to fill children on more expensive foodstuffs, when snacks that are based in carbs are filling and less expensive. So what can we do?
The truth is, some people are very sensitive to carbs and others are not so much. It’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve, and make healthier choices about carbs rather than become super strict and embark on a diet you may not stick with.
It is a good idea to research which carbs are actively health-promoting, and which ones are not. Good ones should be: complex (not simple sugars, not sweets or processed foods), ancient grains, all vegetables, and fruits. If you consume these along with healthy proteins and healthy fats like olive oil and avocado, you are already improving your healthy dramatically.
