Orlando City Soccer Club Arrives
Tonight was a special night for soccer fans in Orlando. Their soccer team, Orlando City Soccer Club, was officially announced as the next expansion team to join Major League Soccer in 2015. This announcement has been rumored for awhile and was just a matter of time for a few months. They will join the league at the same time as New York City FC.
America and England Unite
This all started on the February 27, 2013 podcast where Leyton Orient owner Barry Hearn was a special guest on the podcast. He talked about Leyton Orient but also about a wide variety of topics and general life advice. Since then, Men In Blazers have become the biggest supporters of the club.
On the podcasts, it is common for Leyton Orient to be discussed in general and talk about their results. The biggest support of the Leyton Orient happens on Twitter. The Men In Blazers have 18,000 followers and are often tweeting about Leyton Orient. They send tweets out about the team's results and support the team with words of encouragement. They also interact with Barry Hearn often on Twitter.
Leyton Orient is a very small club. Most people outside of England have never heard of them. They have accepted their small club stature but still have a great fan base. It is not uncommon for people to tweet at Men In Blazers about Leyton Orient. Suddenly, this small club in England has fans in America. It is a great idea and it works because of its authenticity. When Barry Hearn is on the pod, he doesn't ask for people to buy the team's clothes or tickets. All he wants is their support. His sincerity helps attract people to the club.
It is Saturday and a big day of English soccer. Most Americans aren't paying attention. The few are though and they might just be rooting for Leyton Orient. There is nothing like a club with a stadium capacity of 9,000 with a foothold of support in a country of 300 million. Who knows, Leyton Orient might displace the Dallas Cowboys as "America's Team" in 30 years. Who knows? All we know is that Leyton Orient is playing and they have America's support.

Spurs get Spooky
Spurs TV, the club's video channel. tries to do new things to help the fans become closer to the team. In the past they have done trick shots, interviews and games between the players and coaches.
This time they got creative and set up a Halloween prank. They pretended to have players and coaches come into a Halloween decorated room to answer questions but one of their teammates was dressed up in the back of the room and came out in scared them. You don't have to be a soccer fan to enjoy a good prank.
The video has been a huge hit. It has over two million hits in six days, that's a lot of views. Tottenham has done something unique and humanized their brand extremely well. They show the less serious side of their players and create a positive feeling towards them. Everyone likes to see a good prank and some of their athletes not being stuck up.

Adding on to the Castle
Just wanted to add a photo of the front page of the Evening Chronicle which is one of the local papers that Newcastle banned.
Newcastle Closes the Castle
First, I'll give you a quick background of the club. They are one of the more heavily supported clubs in England and their fans are known for their passion. They play at St. James Park which is known to be a very tough place to play because of the fans. They care deeply about this team. In 2007, Mike Ashley bought the team and has a had rocky relationship with the fans due to his players moves and overall direction of the club. Last weekend around 500 fans marched in protest of the owner. This was not the first time that the fans have demonstrated like this and it has been much larger before. Three local papers, the Journal, Evening Chronicle and the Sunday Sun were banned because they covered the event. The papers had balanced coverage of both the fans and the club but the Newcastle hierarchy was still not happy.
By banning the papers the club has made this problem much larger than it was before. They took a small moment of news coverage and blew it up into a national story. This is a radical move and has increased fans displeasure.
In my opinion Newcastle needs to drastically change their managing style because the past six years have been a public relations nightmare. This one problem is only of the many. They need to admit that they overreacted here and reinstate the papers.
One of the reasons why Newcastle is such a special team is their fans. They are betraying what they stand for. Someone needs to tell Mike Ashley to lower the guard and re-open the drawbridge to the castle.

Setting Twitter on Fire
The game was on Sunday versus the New York Red Bulls. The Fire needed a win to host the first playoff game and a tie would mean they would be away for the first playoff game. A loss meant their season would be distinguished (last one, I promise).
First off, the Fire were constantly updating the other games in the league that mattered for playoff implications. They would end the tweet with a link to the playoff scenarios.
After that they tweeted information out about where the game could be found on television. The game was on a few different channels including the Spanish channel so it was important to let people know about that. Then they retweeted some fans getting excited for the game and a few players also. I thought their pre-match approach was done well.
Then for the game, they did something that only a few teams do. They live tweet the game from a separate account. This twitter feed (@ChiFireMatch) only live tweets about the game. A handful of teams do this and it is done so that the main Twitter feed doesn't blow up people's timelines. I think it could be useful if done right. The live tweeting was done well but I think that the main handle could have retweeted some of the major moments of the match. All that the main handle tweeted was the final score.
In the end, the Fire lost and their season was ended (resisting the urge to use another pun...). Then the Twitter feed had to deal with the disappointment with the end of the season. In this aspect, I felt like they struggled a bit. There has only been three tweets about the season being over. One was a thank you to the fans, one was a game recap and the other was a retweet from a player. I just felt like there could have been more. It was a tough way to end the season and the Twitter feed just kind of dropped off.
Overall the social media use by the Chicago Fire was good but not great. It lacked a little during the match and at the end but those are small mistakes. In the end I would give them three out of my soccer balls on my scientific rating scales.

ST. ANTHONY PARISH NEEDS HELP RAISING FUNDS FOR "SAVE THE STEEPLE" CAMPAIGN
The steeple entrance of St. Anthony's was closed two years ago as a result of falling masonry and cracks were noticed. The bells have been silenced since last year. The 145 year old church is need of money for repairs.
Pujara Wirth Torke Inc., an engineering firm from Elk Grove has inspected the steeple over the summer. They said that the steeple is in serious need of repair. Krause Konstruction from Coon Valley, Wisconsin has been retained for the project and will permanently repair and stabilize the entire tower and steeple. The steeple roof will also be reshingled as a part of the project.
A campaign was put together and began on October 14, 2012 to raise the necessary $280,000 by the end of 2012. In just six weeks time a total over $115,00 has been raised with the majority coming from parishioner contributions.
The parish has also raised money through an organ concert in October. There is a St. Anthony's Chili Night planned for December 1st. St. Anthony keepsake calendars and notecards also will be available for sale. Some businesses in the Menomonee Falls community have been contacted and have pledged their support for the project.

Marquette Video Possibilities
1. One story that can be told is the creation of the lacrosse program with the overcoming the monster style. Starting a Division 1 sports program from scratch can be difficult and becoming competitive is even harder. The story can be told in a documentary style. First would be the hiring of the coaches. Then the problems that arise could be highlighted. This would include trying to recruit players to come to a new program. Then early season struggles can be shown and the growing pains of a new program. To finish it off, the first few wins can be highlighted and how the team comes together. It would draw interest because people love sports and they also love an underdog.
2. Another video idea is to use the men's basketball team and the quest style. It could be pitched as their quest to improve on their Sweet 16 appearance even though they lost two players to the NBA. The video can take an inside look at everyday lives of the players at practice and on the road. Most people at school follow the basketball team and would love an inside look at the team. It would be a good example of a quest because people are not expecting them to do good so it will be a challenge for them to match last year's performance.
3. The journey and return idea could be used to highlight the study abroad program. A specific student can be followed for this. They can be profiled before they leave for study abroad. Then the student can be followed while abroad. After the student can reflect on the experience and adjusting back to America. The story can affect two different audiences. One would be a potential study abroad student. The other angle is just a human interest story of someone who has to adjust to a foreign culture on their own.
These are just three stories out of the many possible ones that can be done Marquette. The stories can reach different audiences and help spread the message of Marquette. I also want to thank Dave Murphy for visiting our class.
Career Tips from Two Great Professionals
1. The first thing I learned from them were interview tips. Arlene suggested asking tough questions and being one step ahead. Mary said to do research before hand to determine what you do not know about the company and ask good questions. Answering questions well is important to an interview but everyone knows that. Asking questions can help set you apart from the other candidates. This comes from their advice of being one step ahead and doing research. Anything that can set me apart from another candidate is a good thing.
2. Another thing I learned from the two speakers are good qualities that an intern should have. Mary Henige told us to be self-driven, a problem solver, and resourceful. Arlene McCrehan said to be hard working, know the company's goals, and make the insignificant tasks significant. These things are very important to know because interns can lead to a job offer. People do not get a lot of internship opportunities so when someone gets one, it is important to act the right way to take advantage of it.
3. The third thing I learned was maybe the most important thing, how to actually go about getting a job. Arlene recommended that we be persistent and to network as much as possible. Mary had many tips that include using LinkedIn, volunteering to do something that might spark someone's interest, connect with alumni, join professional groups, and dress professionally. These are all great tips to know and can make a difference. None of the tips are ground-breaking stuff that we have not heard before but they still help. Every little bit that you do helps. Especially with times being time, every little bit of advice helps.
The visits by Mary Henige and Arlene McCrehan to my ADPR 2200 class were a great learning experience. Both were great to ask questions to and they were open to sharing stories with us. I would like to thank them for taking time to talk to us and giving us some useful advice for the future.
Vist to the Milwaukee Public Market
1. The first non-food place I visited was the used books for sale section. This was located at the top of the stairwell in a small corner. There was two carts full of used books available for just $1. The sale of the books benefited the Milwaukee Public Library. One of the coolest things about it was that there was no one working it. You are supposed to put your money in a box there so the whole thing is on the honor system. There was also a table next to the books full of information about the market and Milwaukee tourist information. I just thought that the honor system of paying and the ability to buy old books was cool.
2. The next place I visited was the Culinary Toolbox which was a part of the Spice House. The Culinary Toolbox was full of everything that a kitchen would need. There was spatulas, rollers, and every kind of little knick knack that you could think of. The cashier there told me that the manager likes to call it the "gadget area". According to the cashier the most popular type of customer is a tourist. She said they like to pick up things and play with them. There are locals that come to shop there but they mostly buy a small particular thing. I found the Culinary Toolbox to be a neat little shop with everything that someone would need in a kitchen.
3. The last place I went to was called the Brew City which was being worked by George. The Brew City is a tourist shop full of funny t-shirts and a wide variety of souvenirs. George told me that Brew City is family owned and has been around since 1987. The shirts are made down the block and there are a few other shops around the city. According to George, Brew City likes to stay up with current events in their shirts. Some popular past shirts have been the Packers-Seahawks game and the Ryan Braun steroid controversy. Most of the customers are tourists though and around half of the people that come to the stand ask about where the bathroom is or where they can get a beer. The stand was a cool tourist stand with catchy shirt slogans and nice souvenirs.
The Milwaukee Public Market has much more than just food to offer. It is a great place to walk around if you are not hungry or if you need to kill some time. You can either get something to read, update your kitchen, or get a great souvenir.
Stories and Lessons from Jim Nelson
1. The first lesson I learned from Jim Nelson is to immerse yourself in the area that you want to work in. One way to do this is to read everything that you can on the field. An option is to read a trade publication from the specific field. Then another thing if you wanted to write for the newspaper would be to read the newspaper daily. There is something you can read for every field. This can help you prepare you for your future career by having knowledge of what is happening in the field. It could also help you in a job interview. Another way it can help you is to decide if the field is actually right for you.
2. The second thing I learned was that in a smaller company you get to do everything. Jim told many stories and some of them were about his time working for smaller papers. At a smaller company Jim said that one of the things he enjoyed was that he got to do everything. He was not held to just one small position in the company. I consider this useful information as a young person who is beginning to think about what I want to do after college. Many people just think to go for the large companies because that is where the money is at. The thing is that I always want to like my job which might mean doing a wide variety of things. Jim's advice definitely has given me something to think about.
3. The last thing I learned from Jim was about interviewing. His first tip was about being professional while interviewing. This means if you are going to an interview and not going to take the job that you should let the employer know. You should not go into the interview and not take it seriously because you are not going to take it. His other piece of advice was to research the person who is interviewing you before the interview. This can be helpful because it can help you prepare for the interview. Also in some interviews there is a part where you can ask the person who is interviewing you questions. If you have done research, you can ask them good questions that will impress them and help set you apart from the other candidates.
Jim was full of great stories and advice when he came to visit my class. I know I speak on behalf of my class when I say thank you for coming to my class. I left class with some great stories and a bunch of useful advice that I can use in the future.
Photography Tips
Everyone thinks that with a digital camera, they are as good as anyone at taking pictures. This trend has now continued with Instagram. In truth, there are few people who are actually good photographers. One of them is Ben Smidt who works at Marquette University. He visited my ADPR 2200 class and helped give us tips for a photography assignment and then came back to our class to give us more lessons. My whole class learned a lot but here are just three things that I learned.

Herb Lowe Shares His Experience
My ADPR 2200 class was lucky enough to have Herb Lowe who is currently a professor at Marquette University while working on a Master's Degree. Mr. Lowe has an impressive work history that includes being an executive board member of the National Association of Black Journalists. He also runs a great blog that can be found here. He came to visit my class and talk about writing a news story. It was a great experience where I learned several lessons. Below are just three of the many lessons that can be taken from his blog pots.
David Bornstein Brings Solution Journalism to Marquette
The world we live in is filled with terrible stories and few answers. David visited promoting the idea of solutions journalism. This is the idea when there is a bad problem, reporting should be done on what can be done to fix the problem. If reporting just focuses on the problems, nothing will get solved. Solutions journalism is that notion that writing about solutions to problems is better than just writing about the problems.
Through behavioral science, Bornstein showcased the positive effects of solutions journalism. He said that when stories show people that change is possible, they can become inspired. Another positive from solutions journalism is that people like when change is mapped out for them and helps them reach their aspirations. One of the reasons that Bornstein decided to visit Marquette is that he believes in young people. He talked about how it is important for young aspiring journalists to learn about solutions journalism.
David Bornstein is a former New York Times journalist and an author. He specializes in social innovation and has written a book called " How to Change the World: Social Entrepreneus and the Power of New Ideas" which was called a "bible" in its field by the New York Times. He was introduced by Lori Bergen who is the dean of the College of Communications and senior Kevin Griffin. Bornstein was at Marquette as a participant in the Burleigh Media Ethics Lecture who is annual event named after William R. Burleigh who was the former CEO and president of E.W. Scripps Company.
