Since English isn't your first language you may not know this, but in the U.S. (and possibly some other places) the word "jap" is a racial slur. Just fyi. If you need to shorten 'Japan' or 'Japanese' you might consider using "JPN" instead.

Excuse you, but everyone I know calls the japs, japs. If Americans feel especially guilty for dropping atomic bombs on Japanese people and holding them in concentration camps, it’s not the rest of the world’s fault, and definitely not a slur anywhere but in America. As fandom celebrates the engagement between Yuuri Katsuki and Viktor Nikiforov, somewhere between worlds, Yuuri Shibuya is feeling suddenly insignificant, as if this other Yuuri has usurped his throne and far surpassed his legacy.

“Woah, hold on,” he says.  “I’ve been engaged to Wolfram since the first light novel was released in 2000, and now these guys come along and try to upstage us??  Wow, rude.”

People are having none of it.

“But you proposed by mistake,” they say.

“But you aren’t really in love with Wolfram,” they say.

Yuuri ignores the first comment because he can’t really deny it, and also engagement rings in Barcelona are a lot more romantic than a slap across the face over the dinner table, so he knows he’s already lost there.  Instead, he focuses on the whole “in love” thing, because he doesn’t think anyone else has any business trying to determine how he feels one way or the other.  Also, baseball season ended weeks ago, so he’s feeling a bit pent up competitively, and this seems like a great opportunity for some good old-fashioned sportsmanship or something, even if he feels more defensive than sportsman-like at the moment.

He considers going over everything he and Wolfram have ever done for one another.  That whole “I’ll fall with you” thing still has to carry some weight, doesn’t it?  Then he calls to mind every instance in which he ever waxed poetic about Wolfram over the span of seventeen novels, but he knows it’ll take too long to cover it all.  He starts mumbling something about “the sun” and “looks like an angel” and ends up going on another mental tangent about how Wolfram’s the most beautiful person he’s ever met, but because it happens in his head, no one hears a word of it.

Wolfram comes to the rescue.

“You know what we have that Viktuuri doesn’t have?” Wolfram says.

“What?” Yuuri wonders.

Wolfram’s answering grin is wide with pride.  “A daughter,” he says.

Yes.  Yes!!  That’s it, Yuuri thinks.  He and Wolfram have Greta, and no matter how much fandom might like to pretend Yuri Plisetsky is Viktuuri’s son, they have no official adoption papers to make that situation anything more than a silly delusion.

“What would I do without you, Wolfram?” Yuuri asks.

“Still come in first place instead of fourth, because as much as I hate to admit it, you don’t really need me to take care of you, even if you are an idiot.”

Yuuri and Wolfram high five one another and go have a picnic with their legally adopted daughter.

The next day, the kingdom’s newspaper runs an article about how they’re more in love than ever.

Wolfram smirks and dangles a marriage contract in Yuuri’s face.

Yuuri knows he doesn’t need to sign it to prove anything.

(Somewhere in the depths of the internet, a small but annoyingly loud part of fandom suddenly rises up and says, “But wait. Even if Wolfram still looks and acts really young, he’s actually 66 years older than Yuuri, so that’s pedophilia.”

It’s actually not pedophilia, because neither of them are pre-pubescent kids, and humans and demons age at such different rates that Earthen standards don’t really apply in the Great Demon Kingdom, but this small and annoyingly loud part of the fandom doesn’t care about accuracy. They grasp their pitchforks and begin their war anew.)

There was something about this time of year that brought people together. Sure, Christmas played a part in that, and so did New Years. Maybe the cold weather also had a role in bringing people closer so that they could give and take warmth.

The idea of Greta writing a story as a present really got me (i’m doing the same for my sister this year hahaha), and when talking about Wolfram’s present,  i loved the quotes

It fit nicely, like it belonged there. No, it did belong there.

I can imagine Wolfram spending too much time in choosing what kid of gift would be the most fitting, first, and then an equal (if not longer) amount of time choosing the perfect necklace.  The fact that even the box was fancy gave you a lot of bonus points!!

You’ve really nail all the presents, imo. Conrart’s gift is so—well, Conrart, and the Wolfram Display of Jealousy would totally happen! Poor Gwen can’s still knit for saving his life )’: , and i’m such a fan of Chérie&Miko friendship! Wolfram and Yuuri wearing matching nightgowns is so ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), and Wolf getting angry in his mother behalf is just love <3.

Then shit happens because, you know, this is Earth and we’re pretty good at that =.=, and i love that is Yuuri the one who gets all confrontational (and admits that he was once like them), whereas Wolf’s just so used to it that he doesn’t care anymore.

And the fact that he puts himself between Yuuri and the others so his fiancé couldn’t get hurt is asfadadadass, even if he doesn’t know any martial arts ^^.

Wolfram is so mature when he says

“It doesn’t bother me.” Wolfram said, easily. “People will talk, but it doesn’t matter to me because they don’t matter to me.”

but then, after his whole life in the court, he must be so used to gossip...

and the final line,

The burden of his anger just melted away and gave way to the warmth that only eating a delectable Christmas cake in the company of loved ones could bring.

Hai Red! I was wondering why some people write Yuri and others YuUri (the good folks in my opinion) so what's the real one @.@

Hi there! Well, probably a japanese translator can explain this better, but from what I know there are no official rules about the romanization of japanese language. In the case of the name Yuuri, the sound of the U is double, so if it’s a japanese name it should be like Yuuri, Yûri, Yūri. I’ve seen many ways to mark the long vowel in translations, in english or in spanish, they change them from time to time but usually they use the U to mark that double sound: uu or ou (pronounced “oo”). Some other times, and for different words, they don’t add anything to mark the long sound.

Yuri sounds more like a foreign name. In the case of this series, Yuri would be the original mazoku word Conrart used in the first place, the word meaning July. I think that was taken from german, there were many times they hinted a lot of cultural stuff from the mazokus was related to germany. Even Murata used that excuse to lie to Yuuri about why he was able to speak the language of the other world, so we’re assuming that the mazoku language sounds like german, but that doesn’t necesary means they’re the same.

Also, in japanese they use kanjis and katakana (with a dash in the middle, that can be understood as a long sound if I’m not incorrect) to write Yuuri’s name. I’ve also seen one artbook description and some official japanese stuff in romanji with only one U, but the’re are very few cases they write japanese names like that. When I had to decide along with other translators what to do with that we discarded these romanizations, because it’s still a japanese name and we also thought about the correlation with the word Yuri=July. In the case of other character names, originally foreign names, we needed the official romanizations so we crosschecked all official sources and picked them from there. There’s a list on baka tsuki with names and words we use to keep consistent the texts, but all the novels aren’t all proofread so you’ll see many variables here and there xD

If I’m not mistaken, they all are valid, but use different romanization:

Yūri — Hepburn romanization

Yûri — Nihon-shiki romanization

Yuuri — JLS romanization

The Hepburn one is the most used “officially”, but I think that, as writing the macron ( ¯ ) is quite difficult, people tend to use de JLS. (*)

As always, Wikipedia is your friend hahaha.

(*) I, for example, always use Yūri when writing fics, but Yuuri when talking about him online.

Friendly reminder that even though Yuuri will wax poetic about how beautiful Wolfram is, Yuuri is also very clear in stating that there is absolutely nothing feminine about Wolfram’s face/general appearance at all.

I think that now that people are reading the novels, fanfic writers are doing it less. I’d like to blame the anime for making Wolf look so feminine in fanfics, but even the anime showed him to be strong and absolutely not feminine (when he wasn’t in his night clothes), and Yuuri probably wore as many dresses as Wolf tbh.

I think it was all plane stereotyping inherited from Japanese fans (known to like easily identifiable uke/seme ) which was passed on to fans worldwide.

I haven’t read a single conyuu fanfic, but I’m guessing in them Yuuri is also shown to be a lot more feminine than he actually is. 

Just take a quick look at covers of maruma doujinshis everywhere and you’ll see what I mean.

It’s funny, because maruma’s author, Takabayashi sensei, expressed herself against this type of stereotyping, the whole uke/seme brainwash that most Japanese fans have (and by extension worldwide fans had, at least until a few years ago) .

The reason for this type of stereotyping, if anyone is actually reading my comment this far, is that Japanese people NEED to stereotype and classify everything. You need to be in a little box with a little label or they simply don’t know what to do with you. Since the traditional idea of a couple in most societies has been for millennia male/female, someone in the homosexual relationship had to “play the part of” the other gender.

Stereotyping like this comes, of course, from being completely ignorant about same sex relationships (which is really no one’s fault, because sex is not a matter you discuss anywhere in Japan). 

Hopefully fans worldwide can stop stereotyping in fanfics based on old-fashioned ideas.

Aww shit, you’ve brought up my pet peeve psychotic hatred: the uke/seme dynamic.  You’re not supposed to say its name.  It’s like Voldemort XD 

But yeah, I get what you mean.  I can’t even look at the Owari no Seraph fandom lately.  Even in No.6 they made Nezumi feminine in the anime and they even put him in drag which was something that Nezumi was very careful to hide from Shion in the novels.  They also turned Shion into an albino (completely unrelated, but it also makes me angry).  Uhh, but I’m not sure if you even know what I’m talking about, so…. moving on!

As someone who read a crapton of Conyuu, I can attest that yes, Yuuri gets a little girly in a lot of those - to the point where he’s a bit OC.  Although considering that Conrad has very firmly cemented their relationship as father/son in canon, all Conyuu is a bit OC.  The fact that Julia comes up a lot in those fics doesn’t help all that much.  But, I get the feeling that a lot of Conyuu is more of a way for some fanfic writers to covertly self-insert themselves into a story via Yuuri so I think some of the girlish-ness comes from that more so than a stereotype.  Gwenyuu though, omfg.  I’ve read a total of 1 fanfic that didn’t make me want to murder someone and it was a general friendship fic that was mislabeled Gwenyuu.  

Back on track, I don’t think the Voldemort thing originated in Japan.  It was just kind of floating around in the world and Japan just so happened to give it a name that caught on with fangirls.  ‘So who’s the woman?’ was something I heard waaay before anime was popular in the US.  And great, now I’m thinking about how much GwenGun creeps me the fuck out….  Actually any story with Gunter in a serious romantic role creeps me out, now that I think of it.  It’s so unnatural….

As a last note, there is another Japanese stereotype that I wish would die in a fire: okama that just can’t stop sexually harassing everything with a dick.  Just stop.  Please.  Now.  

And omg, I apologize to everyone for this gigantic wall of text.

I also don’t agree with the stereotypes in yaoi manga.

In maruma you’ll not see anything feminine about Yuu or Wolf. They bring up the topic about “who’s the wife/who’s gonna wear the dress” from time to time, and there were some jokes about mpreg (confirmed being impossible, even in that other world), but that’s it.

Since we’re talking specifically about Wolf, there’s a quote from Yuuri I want to drop here. He starts talking about Wolf and the following description is for Saralegui.

Novel 9, chapter 6:

Wolfram is a pretty boy just like an angel, his blonde hair and emerald eyes the color of the bottom of a lake would never give anyone a feminine impression, even those beautiful lips he inherited from his mother only prove to bring out his strong personality. Lord von Bielefeld is like the sunlight, making people want to run together with him, making it hard not to notice him.

As for the third guest soaking in the pool beside me, he’s like the gently dark moonlight, if you ask whether he has the beauty of a young girl… Actually, just observing him for ten or twenty seconds will refute that conclusion. But everything about him has an aura of neutrality, and none of the roughness of a man.

For example, his fingers. Those slender fingers are elegant in shape, and the fingernails he holds out even have a light shade of pink, the type that wouldn’t look at all out of place holding a cocktail glass with the pinky sticking out. Those hands of his have never held a bat, oh, wait, I correct myself in my mind, they’ve never held a sword.

Sara is more on the androgynous side, but even being like that you can notice he’s a guy after looking well at him. Wolfram will never make you doubt, not by his appearance, not by his personality either. I think beside Josak in drag, or in some cases Sara (and Yelshi?), you can’t confuse any male char in this series with a woman.

Oh and we saw Sara paint his nails with polish, drop Marie Antoinette comments and also use a silk negligee with transparent parts that made Yuuri comment in an ambiguous way (meaning he hates it or likes to see it). Sara’s the most natural-feminine char so far xD

I mean, in the descriptions I’ve seen so far for him they called him mostly

“an angel”.

Both descriptions have something in common, they both describe images of androgynous people. An angel is actually supposed to not have gender, and chorus boys are typically prepubescent, where sexual dimorphism is not as noticeable. 

So, I think something is lost in the translation Wolfrm/androgynous boy and gets labelled as Wolfram/feminine,  due to the misconception of ours where a boy who is not masculine is right away feminine.

Also, the adjectives used to describe him, as pretty/beautiful, are usually associated to girls (guys are usually “handsome”, “good-looking”).

And finally, and although I get why fans wouldn’t like that, I think Wolfram himself has total disregard for  masculine-feminine the stereotypes? I remember a time when he found Gwendal cross-dressed (?) and he commented something like “whatever floats your boat” (not in that words lol) in the sense that he didn’t care about it.

And there was also this time that stick to me in which the novel said that Wolfram didn’t have a lot of girl suitors because he didn’t slow down when he was walking along them or something like that (I think it was a scene in which He and Gisella are looking for Ulrike?)

So he just... doesn’t care about that?
