“I do feel as if I should be at least wearing a wool dress” she agreed. “It’s all a matter of adjustment. I should be used to it by now, I’ve been here a bit over a year.”

He sat back in the chair sipping on his coffee and having a good time just relaxing and narrating exciting tales of all the trouble he nearly got into but managed to slip away. He was grinning to himself about something when her question gets him to raise a brow. Sitting up straight he leans forth, blinking innocently “ I’m doing great Em, you already asked me that remember?” he teased lightly. He figured she may be asking that due to how he had constantly been checking his phone or his nervous habit of nibbling at his dry lips. Clearly, he had not been subtle enough and Emma had caught on. “ Really, you worry so damn much. your poor future husband and kids” he tsks, light-heartedly poking fun while he watched her worried face intently.
Emma offered her friend a small smile. The perfectionist was a detail-oriented person. She’d picked up on his little actions that showed that things might not be as he was trying to make them. But he was good at pretending, she would give him that. “You underestimate me, truly. I’m a worrier. It’s what I do. I’m best prepared for the worst case scenario.” The best case scenario kind of scared her, but she left that out. “But we’re not talking about me right now.” She was mess with her own problems. Everyone else’s she could handle just fine. “What’s got you rudely checking your phone every two minutes?” she posed the question as a tease, but the genuine worry was there.

Emma was sitting outside, scribbling away on pieces of looseleaf. Sketching had become a way of helping her clear her head, but she’d left her sketchbook at home. So she was making do with what she had. But a strong gust of wind whisked her paper away fro her, smacking it right into someone’s face. “Goodness!” she said, jumping up to collect the sheets. “I’m so sorry!”

“I’m sorry to hear it,” Emma frowned. She didn’t speak to her parents as much as she should these days, but they were mostly easygoing pople. “Guilty as charged,” she smiled. “And you’re Evie?”

“i. hate. hot. chocolate.” she said wondering why she was here in the first place. “jesus fuckin- just one sip so this can be over with.” she didn’t care how many people claimed this was the best hot chocolate she hated it and always will. carmen took a sip of the hot liquid drink and when she did she spit the drink right back into her cup. “now i’m pissed because my tongue is burning.”
Emma chuckled at Carmen’s antics as she sipped her own drink. She personally was a huge fan of the stuff, loving every sip of her caramel flavored treat. “Why would you even order it, then? They have so many other drinks here. I didn’t force you, dear.” She’d perhaps highly suggested it, but would never force.

‘ yes mother – ’ the blonde chimed into the phone, a sigh falling from her lips. ‘ i’ll do better. ’ she promised quietly, eyes flickering to see the person near her. she dropped her voice to a lower octave. ‘ i’ll do better. ’ she repeated. ‘ i gotta go. ’ she whispered as she hung up and pushed a hand through her hair, eyes glancing to the other once more. ‘ the holidays, am i right? parents are always…a little more stress cases. ’
Emma offered the girl a sympathetic smile. “This time of year does seem to make people...their least pleasant at times. Try not to hold any stock in it.”

Jax tries to shove down every memory of them being together. But they always bubbled to the surface, like a slow torture as they passed behind his dark eyes. From pulling her close under the sheets, pressing kisses to her forehead and slipping his hand into hers. Now he’s stiff shoulders, makes sure there’s plenty of distance and sharpens his words. Jax is rarely soft and when he notices himself becoming such in the company of another he shuts it down. Caring, love, they both make you weak. He can’t be weak. Weakness took his parents, it won’t take him too. ‘I’ve been great. Never better.’ He’s almost tempted not to ask her the same, pretend he doesn’t care but he slips up and the question leaves his lips before he can shut it down. ‘And you?’
Emma swallowed the part of her that wanted to cry when he said he’d never been better. He had to know he was killing her by saying this. And that hurt even more. The knowledge that even if he hadn’t meant to hurt her when they split, he was willingly hurting her now. She crossed her arms over her chest as if to protect herself. “I’ve been okay,” she replied. “Things have been...quiet.”

This was weird. In the sense it had been a while since they’d crossed paths and no touching or smiling happening. It was as if what connected them before had been cut and Jax knew he was the asshole holding the scissors. He did this. And for the love of- did she have to be so nice? He just wanted her to scream at him, maybe a slap to the face. But this is what drew him in originally anyway. ‘I’m being perfectly fucking civil.’ He crosses his arms like a stroppy child.
Emma hated this. She wanted to jump into the nearest body of water and swim far away. How could it be that this man, a person she had loved and given everything she had to offer, could be talking to her like this? Like they’d never been soft together. Like he’d never cared. And she wanted to hate him for that. But she couldn’t. As unkind as he was being now, she knew he was capable of it. “Sure, Jax,” she said softly. “Have you been alright?”

Emma winced at that. It stung hen he said it. She didn’t hate him for how things ended. She knew she could be a lot to handle, but she really hadn’t thought she’d been so terrible. But perhaps she had. She’d, naively, thought they could be cordial. “It wasn’t on mine either,” she replied softly. “But I’d appreciate it if you could at least be civil, Jax.”

“I believe that,” she mused. “I just think it’s so picturesque. Perhaps that’s lame of me, but it simply isn’t the same.”

Hannah had just finished ordering her coffee and she was struggling to get the coins from the cashier. Maybe if they handed her her change instead of placing it on the table, she would have gotten them faster. She could sense the impatience of the line behind her as she grabbed the coins. And in a sense of urgency, she quickly left the counter and bumped into someone, her coins spilling down the floor. “Shit.” The curse would go for both her clumsiness and the now falling coins on the floor. “Really sorry.”
Emma was waiting around for her tea, not in any particular sort of rush. She enjoyed the coffee shop atmosphere and looked forward to some relaxing time with a book. She was taken out of her thoughts a bit when a girl bumped into her, crashing coins to the ground. But she offered her a smile, kneeling down to help her collect the money. “It’s no problem at all, dear Don’t feret for a moment.”

“Don’t let anyone round here hearing you say that, they’re all bitter about that magical storm that blew in.” The girl laughed a little, after spending a few winters in Russia, she would have given anything for a simple weekend of snow, “You’re in California now, the only snow you’ll see is that fake bubble stuff.”
Emma chuckled at the response. “Fair point,” she agreed. “It’s been a strange adjustment to make, but then again, I’ve never spent all that much time in the snow anyway. I just think it’s nice to look at.”
Emma was sat in a coffee shop with her friend, sipping gently at her green tea. Jayce seemed to be going through a tough time, and the inner mother in her couldn’t let that go. She wanted him to know that he wasn’t alone.
“How have you been doing, dear?” she asked, worry stitched into her expression. “I’m sorry I’ve been so absent as of late, I got busy. But I’m here now.”
