I honestly am on cloud nine. I mean like this was my saving grace after coming back from California last year, so I mean it’s just a safe time to be me, you know? What about you any big gay plans?

I’m glad! And yeah, I remember that. You deserve lots of love and happiness, so yeah, go celebrate you and whatnot! Me? No, no, I’m just going to sit at home and watch Rent or something. Force Steven to tango with me, that sort of thing. Although, I think Steven might go to Pride. His moms want him to send pictures.

Father’s Day weekend was supposed to be one of those times of the year where she was able to sit down on the couch with her father and have a drink with him while listening to old rock and blues music. Instead, here she was, staring–no, glaring–down an aisle of new sci-fi books, attempting to bring herself into a better mood, which, unsurprisingly, was not quite working in the slightest. Her father had never side-stepped this weekend of theirs together but he supposedly had a business trip while Alex, her brother, had told her that it was due to a woman. Disgruntled and thoroughly unimpressed by the titles, she randomly picked up one of the books, flipped through it in a matter of seconds, shoved it back on the shelf, and stalked over to the romance section of the bookstore.

Darcy sighed at the pile of books before her, knowing that she’d have to put them all back if she wanted to eat this month. Or, most of them back. She got up and headed first to the fantasy section, and nearly crashed into a familiar face. “Heather,” she said, “um, hey. Fancy seeing you here.” She felt flustered as her books fell from her arms. “Just holding these for a friend,” she muttered sarcastically.

❛ Oh, mine too. I’d seen shows in Belfast and on the West End, but Wicked was the first I saw on Broadway –– had t’beg my family to come to New York and see the show. Made me realize that theatre was definitely something I wanted to do, y’know? ‘Course, my story’s hardly unique. Half the city wants to be on Broadway because of one show or another.  ❜

Have they come back to New York now that you’re in it? And maybe not unique, but it’s a pretty good success story. Especially coming from the West End - makes you special.

“Yeah, you can.” Gia smiled up at the girl, knowing she was harmless. “Really? Well we’re lucky that you choose the stage instead of the stars. Ah, you know those dry spells is just a sign that God is creating something amazing for you.” She slipped beneath the girl’s arm, holding her up. “Well I promise you I will not feel you up and the next time some random guy does it, you shove your foot right up their ass, okay? If not for you, do it for me.”

“Technically the stage didn’t choose me back. Which is why I’m on crew. And I don’t think I believe in God.” She accepted support from the stranger, figuring it was the right call. She recognized the woman. Gia, from Hamilton with Evie. “Good,” Darcy said when she said she wouldn’t touch her, “because if you did I’d have to reject you and then I would have to find another way home aside from the pretty actress.”

Hmm. Other friends? What are those? Oh yeah, that’s right! Willa is our friend! Maybe also Ava and Andie? You could invite your Rachel.

No, no, Rachel would try to sleep with Andie and that wouldn’t be fun for anyone because who knows if we’d have to share a tent and I don’ wanna see that.

Gia sighed gently, knowing feel well this wasn’t going to be an easy one and done kind of right. “And the lights. They say you can see the lights of Broadway from space.” She smiled at the woman, rummaging through her bag for one of the small bottles of water she’d stashed there. “So–where do you live? I mean that with a curious mind not creepy–at all.”

“You can?” Darcy said. That would be amazing. “When I was little I wanted to be an astronaut,” she mused, “Before I discovered theatre. And these days I just want to be employed. You know how’t goes.” She giggled and stumbled a little. “I live in the Village, and it’s okay if you mean it creepy. Already had one guy try to feel me up tonight. Gotsa, gotta stop drinking, but I tell myself that all the time.”

No, not right now. We could plan it out though. It would be fun. And is there? I didn’t know, but I guess maybe if I was a lesbian I might be able to keep a girlfriend.

You wound me, Albright. But yeah we’ll go camping. See if some of our other friends want to come too. Do we have other friends? No Nora. Ooh, ooh! Willa!

One of the worst things about this city is the fact that you can’t see the stars. It’s a big change. If you wanna see stars, real stars, we should go camping or something, somewhere where night is night. It’s just not the same in the city that never sleeps.

Steven, are you asking me on an impromptu camping trip? Because I hear there’s a stereotype about lesbians and camping. People might think you’re a lesbian.

Well, lucky for me, I don’t have to greet a hundred adoring fans outside the theater every night like some big name actors do, so I can sometimes actually get a good night’s sleep, so long as all the props are set correctly.

Well, I did apply to work crew there at one point, so I do completely get the appeal in being a part of the biggest gateway Broadway show since Phantom. I mean, I seriously get it. It’s the dream. It’s being a part of what get so many people hooked in theatre. Inspiring all those young girls - Wicked was the first show I ever saw on Broadway. It changed my life.
