Does anyone else with autism literally not know what sensory things are bothering them unless they somehow find out or make a sustained effort to know what it is?

Like, I see all these posts that will be like “i can’t x because the light is too loud” or “my scalp hurts” or something, and that’s fine because those are the reasons that these feelings are happening, but oftentimes when I’m in a situation I have just mentally unconsciously blocked out whatever it is, like say it’s a repetitive buzzing from a light, i’ll just be PISSED and I won’t know why, and then i’ll realize i’m pissed, and then maybe I’ll step too close and hear the light buzzing and be like “OH”.

Like I feel like I’m never right away conscious of what’s bothering me, or even that something IS bothering me, I just start acting out for what feels like no reason.

Like, it genuinely took me YEARS to realize that why i’m so uncomfortable in certain places is because of how loud fluorescent lights are. (like, I know they light a space well, but I can’t be the only one that is bothered by such loud appliances, I feel like a know many neurotypical people who should also be upset over a buzzing light. why did we, as a society, decide to install vibrating lights everywhere?)

i don’t see enough of this on tumblr but it’s ok to have a great relationship with your family. i love going home. i love going to the grocery store with my dad on a saturday morning. i love driving aimlessly with my sister. i love calling my mom after work. i love waking up in my childhood bed. i love making pancakes while everyone is asleep. i love sending memes to the family group chat and having to mansplain them to my parents. i love watching hallmark movies together. i love surprising them with little gifts and treats. i love calling my parents when i have good news. i love my dads cryptic texts. i love having 5 hour phone calls with my sister. i love asking my mom how to get rid of stains. i love it.

Because AO3 is that site. Because AO3 was that site long before you decided AO3 was better than the sites you bullied us off of before, and I can promise you if someone somehow comes up with a fanfic site you like better specifically for the 'gross stuff' you'll try to bully us off that too so you can benefit from it.

AO3's specific core purpose is to preserve fanfiction, yes, but it was also instigated as a host site for the fanfiction that kept getting yeeted off other platforms like Wattpad. Its designed to preserve all fanfiction, not just the fanfiction you, personally, think is 'allowed' to be written.

AO3 is the site for all the gross stuff the freaks make. We've been there just as long as you. We've been funding it just as long as you have. AO3 has specifically said you have a place here. The timeline was literally:

Wattpad/FF.net/LiveJournal purge fanfics > AO3 is born > The people who's fics got purged moved over to AO3 > AO3 gains popularity as the best functioning site > The people who pushed for the fics to be purged off Wattpad move to AO3 > The same people try to push for AO3 to purge fics.

AO3's source coding is open-access. You go make a polished, strict, rigid site where nothing 'icky' is allowed. You go make a site where you can control what is hosted. We already have our space.
