Only yesterday, the Anti-terror Bill was signed into law by the Philippine president. If the law is implemented, it practically removes people’s human rights and subjects citizens to more oppression from the government. There are already COUNTLESS forms of economic and governmental oppression present, which you can see through sources below. This law makes our present situation unbearably worse. Nobody is talking about this law on mainstream media outside of the country.

Here is a master list of sources about inequalities in the Philippines, both present and historical. All news articles are in English. Even if you are not Filipino, please still self-educate, REBLOG to spread awareness, and search up ways you can help. Sadly, I am afraid to share links to things such as petitions and donation drives because of the new law. However, I implore you to help one way or another. I know I can count on the academia community to listen and help us. Thank you.

Free Documentaries 

COVID-19 Response: The Atom Araullo Specials: COVID-19: Nang Tumigil Ang Mundo | Full Episode

This documentary is in Filipino but is still useful in understanding Philippine context during the pandemic. Please be prepared to witness the lack of government initiative and the struggles of socioeconomically disadvantaged Filipino citizens. For instance, this documentary includes how workers in the National Capital Region who live in provinces struggle to return to their homes due to poor transportation systems and abrupt government decisions. Regardless of whether or not you are able to understand the language, this documentary sufficiently showcases what is currently taking place in the Philippines in terms of the lack of medical supplies, government aid, and economic preparedness. Moreover, captured are the abuses of power due to Community Quarantine provisions (i.e. public humiliation of curfew-breakers, etc.)

Martial Law in Philippine History: BATAS MILITAR: Martial Law Under President Ferdinand E. Marcos Full Documentary

This is a historical documentary in Filipino. It aims to shed light on the Marcos Regime, wherein uncountable atrocities and abuses took place. This dictatorship is integral to learning about the previous injustices Filipino citizens suffered in the past and what the current Constitution intends to avoid from happening again. 

The Current Regime’s Extrajudicial Killings: Duterte's Drug War (full film) | FRONTLINE

This documentary is in English and has English subtitles. This is still happening today. This documentary depicts brutality on suspected drug users and seller. You will notice that those targeted are often from low socioeconomic classes. In the Philippines, the impoverished are subject to fear of being suspected as a “drug user” or “drug pusher” without their right to due process. There are more news articles on this below.

Education & Poverty (These were not made within the context of COVID-19. However, they contextualize economic inequalities in the Philippines as is, without the pandemic effects just yet. Hence, these documentaries are good for empathizing with citizens and understanding how bad economic inequality is in the Philippines.)

Some of these are old and some are new. This should be a starting point for self-education, not the whole picture. I chose these documentaries and articles based on how truthful their depiction is of Philippine issues. I do operate under limitations such as the minimal access to free documentaries and the number of news articles that are as unbiased as they can possibly get. However, I believe there are truths in these sources and it is our responsibility to digest this information as carefully as possible. I did cross-check this information from credible news sources, apart from documentaries which are highly limited as compared to news articles. As a student myself, I do not claim that these sources are perfect. I understand there are still biases and that there could be objective errors. from my previous posts, you can see i don't have a very good relationship with my mother and being 18 in my country means i'm still obligated to live with her while i'm still in school. well, i'm finishing school in just under four months and i know she wont pay for my college (despite the law literally being that she has to finance me as long as i'm in school and until i turn 26) so i'm starting to save some money up to be able to get myself through college.

should i get into the college i want, ill be able to stay with my dad and then wont have to pay for much except for my food and some utilities.

since dollars are worth a LOT more here in croatia, by donating 15, you pay for two days worth of actual good food. i have no idea how much id actually have to have to get myself through a whole year, but once i actually get through a week of living like that, ill know.

here’s to all the studyblrs and academics who have violent households. i understand quarantine makes it harder. i know it’s difficult to take aesthetic pictures. i know you can’t even plan your study days because sometimes, outbursts are so bad that you need to protect yourself. i know it’s hard to complete any studyblr challenge, most especially 100 days of productivity. i know it feels like you’re behind everyone because your life isn’t as pretty as other people’s.

i see you, i’m here for you, and i care about you. regardless of how ugly our study spaces are, no matter how much time and energy is taken by trying to protect ourselves and other people, we are still academics who deserve to pursue education within the limits we face. 

it’s okay to be stressed, scared, and unproductive. it’s okay to have the ugliest study area in the world or even no designated area at all. you are strong and these circumstances don’t define how smart you are.

you are an academic. you deserve love. i am so proud of you. keep going

Informant. Set a checklist of going through the blm tags all of these sites every day: twitter, Tumblr, instagram, tiktok, reddit. Crosspost as many things onto all of them as possible, and encourage people to share. If you can't do all of that, scroll through the blm tiktok tag and download and repost as many videos as you can onto other sites.

POOR PEOPLE

Donate. You don't have money? Have this and this playing in the background constantly, but don't skip a single ad. By watching these, the ad revenue is supporting bail funds and protesters. Everyone should at the very least do this.

HACKERS

Doxx accounts that spit neo nazi or kkk propoganda. Get real names if you can.

THERAPISTS:

If you're a professional therapist or somebody who's gone to therapy and already recovered from depression, anxiety, or another mental illness, you may be very suited to be able to make sure to prevent Nazi or KKK propaganda from affecting children. Talk to minors that have concerning offensive jokes on their blog, make sure they're okay, and gently explain to them that their actions are wrong. Do not: I repeat, do not do this for full-blown nazis, and never do it in a public post. Do it in dms. If you let them speak publicly that's just sharing their propaganda.

BLM JOBS AND TIPS FOR LIVE PROTESTORS:

All protesters:

Keep this site bookmarked. It shows local protests.

Undercover cops wear neutral clothes. Grey white and black. Look for cuffs in the back pocket.

WEAR A MASK. Have fun with it, too. A lot of field medics have been wearing a homemade plague doctor mask, and a lot of the offense team has been wearing black spiked ones. Make your own with it's own pretty design from this sewing template that's been proven to be more effective than mass-produced masks, because there's a pocket in it where you can put a replaceable filter in it.

If gas gets thrown, don't panic. You can do two things: take the gas canister, put a traffic cone over it, and pour water on it until it's extinguished. Or put it in a larger container full of water, and put the lid on loosely. Don't put it on tight, or the container will explode. Alternatively, if you're wearing protective gear, put the lid on tight and throw back it at the police.

Guards:

Keep the cops away from the sign holders and medics at all costs. Keep to the front lines, and make sure you're well equipped to handle gas. See this post for good gas equipment. Wear padded leather clothes with spikes to keep you safe. Make sure most of your skin is covered, unless you're white. Leave some arm or leg or (non-eye nose or mouth, just cheeks or forehead) face skin uncovered. It will be your greatest weapon:

If you're white and see a lot of black protesters being hurt, jump on front of them and yell "white shield!" Other white protesters will join you, and the police will not hurt you as bad as they'll hurt black protesters.

Do NOT. Throw any bricks. Police have been planting pallets of bricks near protests. Instead, bring glue, cement, or tape, and attach the bricks to the ground in the middle of roads. This prevents police from being able to drive on them. Get creative, make little stone henges and tents for the best effects. Stone henge: two vertical bricks placed an inch away from each other, stack one horizontal brick on top. Tent: two vertical bricks leaning against each other.

Do NOT wear swimming goggles, if you get punched your eyes are going to pop out of your sockets. Use science goggles instead.

Medics:

check out this and this post. It'll show you what stuff to bring and what to do if someone gets gassed. This is a really good and more in depth pdf for riot medics. Try wearing clothes that indicate you're a medic without making yourself a target for police.

Picketers:

Keep to the center of the formation. Keep yourself safe. Come in a group if you can. If you are not in a group: don't be a picketer. Live stream, film, or take photos of the entire event for the history books. If we lose, the cops will NOT get to say that they were the good guys.

i’ve been thinking quite a lot recently and i kind of realized for the first time that a lot of dead poets society fans like the movie because they relate to neil and what he goes through.

and i know that right know is a very easy time to spiral into a bad place and it’s very easy to think “who would miss me”. and if you’ve felt like this for a long time you’ve heard it all but i’m going to give you a stupid, very real reason because i don’t know a lot but i do know that it’s been thirty one years since dead poets society came out and we’re all still mourning neil’s death and he’s a fucking fictional character. and you’re a real person. so i know the dps fandom is a kind of wild place but i see all of you out there who love dead poets society because you feel like neil or have todd level of social anxiety and self hate or try to act larger than life to hide the fact you clearly have underlying issues like charlie or identify with any of the poets for one reason or another. we’re all here for you because as batshit as fandoms are i think when it comes down to it, it’s not only about the distraction and the loving of the piece of media; it’s also because there are other people in this fandom who love this movie for the same exact reason you do and you always have that support.

thinks to himself “carpe diem” every time he goes to a terror professor’s class

is part of the over 75% of welton graduates who move onto the ivy league

drinks wine when having to study core subjects he does not care about

misses classes way too much

overanalyzes for poetry classes, almost fails college-level math

just goes along with how neil wants to spend date night

he loves suits because he gets to blend into the crowd even if he is the most frightened college student that has ever existed

his parents buy him ugly suits and he pretends to like them

studies at the coffee shop until 2 AM, unless neil is studying a role because he joins neil at the diner and withstands the terrible coffee

exam season breakfast is either nothing, or something while on the subway (he tries to be as discreet as possible)
