SCENE: “The Bison’s Shadow
EXT. EARTH KINGDOM MARSHLAND EDGE – LATE AFTERNOON
The ground is soft, damp, and uneven — a miserable place to track anything except a creature the size of a house.
Which is exactly what Kai is doing.
He crouches low, fingers brushing a deep, wide indentation in the mud. The print is unmistakable: Appa’s massive paw. But the edges are uneven, the depth inconsistent.
KAI
He’s hurt. Front right leg. He’s dragging it. He’s also alone.
Azula steps beside him, arms folded, eyes sharp.
AZULA
So the Avatar’s pet is wounded and alone. How… convenient.
Mai and Ty Lee dismount behind them.
TY LEE
Alone? Are you sure?
Kai nods once, still studying the ground.
KAI
No human footprints. No signs of the Avatar or his friends.
He’s been flying low. Crashing through branches. He’s panicked.
Mai looks around the marsh.
MAI
If I were a giant flying bison, this is the last place I’d want to be.
Azula smirks.
AZULA
Which is why he’s here. Desperation makes creatures stupid.
Kai rises, scanning the treeline. Something else catches his eye — faint impressions in the mud, lighter, narrower, more disciplined.
He rises an approach He kneels again.
KAI
We’re not the only ones tracking him.
Azula’s expression tightens.
AZULA
The Avatar?
KAI
No. These prints are too uniform. Too coordinated.
(he touches a shallow heel mark)
Five… maybe six individuals. All moving together. Light armor. Balanced stances.
Ty Lee leans over his shoulder.
TY LEE
So… Earth Kingdom soldiers?
Kai shakes his head.
KAI
No. Soldiers drag their feet more. These people move like—
(he stops himself)
—like trained fighters. But not military.
Mai sighs.
MAI
Great. Mystery warriors. Just what we needed.
Azula’s eyes narrow with interest rather than concern.
AZULA
Whoever they are, they’re after the same prize. And they’re ahead of us.
Kai stands, gaze following the second set of tracks.
KAI
They crossed the marsh quickly. They know how to move in terrain like this.
(beat)
We’ll catch them at the ridge. They’ll have to slow down there.
Azula mounts her mongoose-lizard, posture regal and predatory.
AZULA
Then we’ll take the bison… and deal with our uninvited guests.
Kai mounts behind her, bow angled across his back.
As they ride, Kai glances once more at the dual trails — Appa’s heavy, desperate path and the lighter, disciplined footprints following him.
He doesn’t know who they belong to yet.
But he knows one thing:
KAI (quietly)
They’re good. Whoever they are.
Azula hears him, and her smile sharpens.
AZULA
Then this will be fun.
