I was just checking in on the status of the Quileute tribe's Move to Higher Ground (MTHG) project!

Phase 1, the construction of a new school outside of the tsunami zone, has been completed.

"Our priority was the relocation of the Quileute Tribal School (QTS). Formerly located on a deserted US Coast Guard site, QTS was a few feet above sea level at the Quillayute River estuary, within the Pacific Ocean tsunami inundation zone. On August 5, 2022, the Quileute Tribe celebrated the completion of its newly constructed school on the designated MTHG relocation zone, beyond the threat from tsunamis. The new facility includes a full-size gymnasium with high school regulation sized basketball and volleyball courts, computer and technical skills labs, science laboratories with lockable chemical preparation rooms, a fully equipped woodshop, state of the art technology to enhance student learning, and an upper school lounge where the older students can gather to collaborate, study, or relax during free time. With Phase 1 completed, the Tribe is now working to establish the next phase of the project."

Following Phase 1, the project leads completed a survey to identify priorities for continued housing development needs and is in a planning phase for the next stage of the project.

I’m gonna keep this short so people read it but the activist camp at Riehpovuotna (norwegian: repparfjorden) have been protesting for over four months against the building of a copper mine that plans to dump 30 million tons of toxic mining waste into the fjord. This will have devastating consequences for the local ecosystem, the salmon fjord and the indigenous reindeer herders in the area. The camp is run by sámi and environmental activists, and they need support to keep it going. They are planning to stay the winter and this is in the far north, so temperatures are dropping fast, last I was there it reached -6 degrees in october, and it might get down to -25 or lower later in the winter. The money will go to supplies, food and legal funds for the activists who are getting unreasonably high fines for civil disobedience and need lawyers. I don’t know if you can donate outside of the country, but please share this so people can donate and sign the petition

We are facing a catastrophic disaster. I know I know a lot is going on, my heart is so heavy for Sudan and El Fashir, also for Palestine (Gaza and the West Bank), Congo and too many other places. The islands in the tropics are largely ignored during hurricane season though and we are on the brutal receiving end of climate change when we barely contribute to it.
