will darkwhitetron ever return from the war?
Does anyone ever really return from a fandom war((Real answer: idk we were never very active here and some stuff is going on for me-Mod Chuchule))
Hai hello, listen, I just want to thank you. Thank you so much for what you did on my Hance's post, I reeeeeeally appreciate that. You weren't wrong when you said ppl gave me trouble. A lot of have a lot of time honestly, and I'm just so tired because of them mentally that I rarely go to tumblr anymore because of them. -sigh- I'm so glad ppl like you exist, I'm rly happy to know that you're in my circle. Again thank u so much, and please have a blissful and great day!
I’m so so sorry that fandom has done what it has to you. I remember finding your old Lance art and then some recent stuff and it took one look for me to know people had been giving you a hard time. These so-called whitewash-call outers never get it right: it’s jaw droppingly amazing to me how stupid, ignorant, and lazy they are. They have no shame about harassing artists without even bothering to check with screenshots which is some level of prideful saviour bs I cannot comprehend. The same people who’ll scream and complain if Lance Hunk or Allura are a literally smidge lighter than the key cards have no qualms about making them 30 shades darker. They scream about protecting “rep” while shitting on and bullying real life artists (who are woc! my apologies if I’m wrong or you dont like the term). So thank YOU for the beautiful Voltron art! Thank YOU for staying strong and continuing to draw in the face of the haters and THANK YOU for this lovely message! You are not alone, far from the only artist to receive this treatment and not the only onewhose tired of it!((idk if you wanted this private but I can delete it if so))
Hance/Hanceome! (。’▽’。)♡
this is such a great Hank and Larry I couldn’t help but edit it to look like my favorites, Hunk and Lance from VLD!! hope you don’t mind!!
@larry
I know your blog hasn't posted in a while which means I hope you've given up this bullshit
But never forget how much of an idiot you were
She looks the same in every picture of the lighting I'm finding though. Unless it's fan art or an edit diskskwksowj and the lighting shouldn't matter because it's still her skin tone
“lighting shouldn’t matter” mhm okay
COLOUR IS LIGHT
Yeah, don’t worry dear disciple, We didn’t read that as malicious at all. ( ´ ▽ ` )b
See, the key difference here is the context. You don’t shit on the original designs & while you DO draw them differently, it’s because of your own personal style & not because you want brownie points for making them look more “ethnic”. Also you said you try to keep things true to model, which is something THOSE types of artists avoid like the plague (“whew, got rid of Lance’s ugly pointy chin & made his hair extra curly, like & reblog my Cuban Lance edit~”).
The “fanon VLD characters” we were mocking? Those all had captions & tags saying (or the artist themself later saying) that the show’s artists were stupid & racist (”Give her black features you cowards”, “Dreamworks should hire me because I can actually draw POC :)”).
That type of art very clearly doesn’t use references (Human Lance with white freckles??? Vitiligo on Hunk but it looks like a giraffe pattern instead???) & the end result is more racist caricature than actual fanart. (And in those cases, it’s very clear that it’s not because “oh the artist just has that sort of style”.)
You also have people screaming about how Allura is black rep (solely because of her skin color & nothing else) while shaming or outright ignoring South East Asian Allura or Native American Allura even though those races also have dark skin like canon Allura does. (So warbonnets are inappropriate on actual warrior princess Allura, but dreads & afros aren’t? 🤔)
There were even people yelling how Lotor (whose mother is as dark-skinned as Allura) could not possibly BE dark-skinned & that any fanart of human Lotor being dark-skinned was unacceptable because Galra are oppressive, white people are oppressive & so Lotor HAS to be white. It doesn’t matter that he’s mixed race, he’s a villain so he MUST be Caucasian in fanart.
Not to mention - these same fucking people cannot even recognize the actual canon skin tone of the characters from the show.
We’ve discussed before on Whitetron smugly “advising” artists to use the eyedropper tool, but even when people actually DID do that (INCLUDING the Canon vs Fanon pic - the OP for that explicitly decided to use the eyedropper tool & not just pick a similar tone to it), they were still yelled at by Whitetron & other antis in a condescending smug tone.
Because those antis literally do not know what the characters actually looked like.
It’s all performative. They don’t & have never actually cared about POC or those characters in the first place.
oh goody the whitewashing discourse has reared its ugly head again. anyway, here’s a “fun” game.
here I have a Lance palette I made around a year ago now. one of these swatches is sourced from a piece of “whitewashed” Lance fanart featured on whitetron, the rest are sourced from different screenshots of the show. can you tell which one is from the fanart?

obviously i’ll do more but for now have these 👀☕️
The darker skinned you draw allura, the more valid you are
No
I'm really tired of fanartists acting as if drawing brown characters super dark is somehow more progressive
For one thing, many of these artists, usually young and inexperienced draw her so dark and don't compensate in any way to make facial features visible
Secondly, it comes off as *black face*
Nothing is wrong with Alluras canon skin tone and you are not a better person, more progressive, more woke ad naus. for drawing her five shades darker
New worst part of the cover wank is 3 billion parrots screaming how they hate DreamWorks and how the response they got instantly isn't good enough, more complaining about Hunk and Lance's development (as if Allura and Shiro arent also characters of colour**) while also ignoring all the material of Hunk and Lance they have gotten. Plus this fandom is constantly ready to eat anyone alive if they step out of line because they are devoid of all empathy and critical thought and don't know how to process things in a positive manner
Now I gotta skim past another 200 posts whimpering variations of "Beautiful brown skin boys uwu" and "my brown babies" sounding creepy af and like they have a hardcore race fetish
What this fandom thinks whitewashing looks like
What actual whitewashing looks like (and from a source that actually matters):
Anyways here’s hoping this preview is a bad photo or an editor gets in there and lets the colourist know this aint no Voltron Force
EDIT; (2 seconds later): Lion Forge has ALREADY responded and assured us this is not the final coloration!!
https://twitter.com/lionforge/status/949406324156190720
mega confusion on why people ask why you draw lance all “whitewashed” when you use the same skin tone (maybe even slightly darker) as the official Lance picture from the wikia
it’s because being proven Morally Superior on a bullshit point is more gratifying than just adjusting your screen brightness
Make no mistake, there’s no problem with Lance getting a gnarly tan or artists drawing him darker because they want him to look more like themselves: but at what point do artistic liberties make him unrecognizable? How many features can you change before your character looks like a racebend? And whats up with the freckle fetishism? Of course with a blog like whitetron calling out artists for colouring Lance his canon skin tone, being too saturated (orangewashing??) or too pink (pinkwashing!?) then of course artists will draw Lance darker to avoid getting called out.
Full offense but if I see you out here drawing keith like this:
You’re getting blocked
Here at dwt....we have no idea why the above is a thing ™
-Mod Chuchule
why r u so scared to draw allura and lance with actual dark skin lol
When going through the vo/tron tag, I feel like I'm watching a completely different show. So many people screech things like "Hûnk and P&dge have zero development!" and "Let A//ura grieve and express trauma!", like... Where were you the last 3 seasons? While Hûnk and P&dge did get sidelined, they had entire episodes in S1 dedicated to their development. As for A//ura, she expresses trauma literally every seaspon (holo-dad, the Ga/ra, Alt!A/teans). I think they're just pretending to care tbh.
They love to forget about Hunk’s Ba/mera arc. P/idge had a shit ton of screen time in Season 1 & 2. And they dismiss A//ura’s ongoing arc of dealing with her past and the Ga/ra as “the writers being racist by making her sympathise with her oppressors”.
They erase A//ura’s, H/unk’s and L/ance’s defining character traits completely - instead A//ura is depicted as a goddess, H/unk is a pure, innocent cinnamon roll and L/ance is downright perfect - because we can’t let brown & black characters have flaws, now, can we? Can’t let them be human.
