Hi! I’m Sid, I’ve been drawing for like at least ten years at this point, but I’ve been pretty inconsistent up until recently. The strip was finally in sight, and right now the only thing keeping Jane’s boots trudging through the Mojave dust was the prospect of finding the man that had shot her.

After plenty of smooth talking and a whole lot of ammo she’d finally accumulated enough tips to lead her to the gates of the new Vegas strip, she didn’t even second guess pushing forward. She raised a curious eyebrow as one of the securitrons rolled towards her, its wheel making a loud ‘crunch’ noise as it rolled over all of the broken concrete and right up to her.

She rolled her eyes nearly to the back of her skull when she was told there was a mandatory ‘credit check’ just to enter the strip. She begrudgingly provided the needed proof by shaking a large container of caps she’d pulled out of the cross body messenger bag she was wearing, the securitron scanned the box before slowly rolling back “keep moving.” The robot barked.

She shoved the box back into the correct pocket, taking one final glance at the large expanse of the Mojave before entering the large red gates that separated her from the strip and potentially the man she’d come to know as ‘Benny’ from tips and word of mouth.

He had figured at best, maybe the woman he had shot wouldn’t remember him, actually. Fuck that, he figured at first she would be dead because he shot her in the head with Maria and people who are shot in the head with Maria don’t usually get up and start skipping through the Mojave all giddy like.

He thought Mr New Vegas had been bluffing for whatever reason, that the threat of the Courier still being alive was simply House’s way of telling him he knew and that Benny was in for it. A simple threat. A ‘Get out while you still can’ type of deal. Which he wouldn’t have listened to anyway.

Hearing the fact that anyone new had entered town always wounded him up, because he knew that she was coming there. To kill him? To..to scold him? Clearly it would be to kill him, right? Thats what he would do if some asshole shot him in the head mid delivery.

As soon as the Courier entered the Tops, Benny could hear Swank saying something. And for once in his life he was hoping Swank was gonna do his damn job.

“Tell her to give up her weapons, Swank. Make yourself useful.” He muttered through his hand, masking a cough, even though there was no possible way for Swank to hear him from where he was standing.

And hey. If she didn’t like Swank saying that? If she decided to unload every bullet she had into Swank and the other man at the desk? Well.

..Well, Benny would miss the poor cat. But between Swank and him? Benny knew exactly who’d he rather have die.

He flinched, moving his head to the side as if he were expecting her to pull a gun out on him, and apparently his guards must’ve thought that too because even they had paused for a moment.

Benny stated at the chip in her hands. His jaw dropping open before snapping shut. “Well isn’t that just peachy?” He croaked, “Must’ve.. slipped out of my pocket on the way here, eh? Happens to the best of us.”

He shoved his hands into his suit pockets, trying to give off an aura of calmness. “Now look, you and I both know House isn’t sending anybody. Cuz if he was I think they’d have been here before you. But I don’t think he’d do that, knowing him..it’s too messy. Too loud. Bad for business.” He grinned, It’s been..what? Days since I shot you? Yeah. Days. I’m guessing you’re here to kill me?”

He pulled his hands out then, holding his palms up like he was trying to soothe a wild animal. “But let’s keep this smooth, huh? Real smooth. I don’t think you have a single clue about what that thing does.”

“Yea, well maybe you’d get to know the answer to that question under different circumstances…it’s really too bad you’re such a loser under that fancy suit and all of that fake swagger.” She said, eyeing him up and down as if he was wearing the most hideous outfit in the entire wasteland.

She watched the guards visibly take pause when she didn’t pull a gun, but instead the chip. It was small, easy to lose if you weren’t careful. Hard to believe this was what everyone was after.

She couldn’t help but scoff to herself before laughing dryly, the chip clutched tight in her palm “even so..” she began, holding up the chip closer to her face and looking at it under the dim casino lighting “what if nobody gets it?” She asked, shrugging casually like it was the easiest question in the world.

“What if I just crush it?” She asked, her grip squeezing ever so slightly around the silver chip. She couldn’t help but get the feeling nothing good would come of her destroying the chip all together, but she couldn’t resist pushing it jut a little further. “Sell it, shoot it…” she muttered just loud enough for him to hear before eying his guards “excuse your men and we can negotiate something.” She finally offered, her arms crossing over her chest impatiently.

Benny’s gaze flicked to his guards, and he let out a sigh, giving them a smile that seemed way too wide to be genuine and snapping his fingers, “Boys, take five.” He said through clenched teeth.

The guards hesitated, because even they could tell this was a terrible idea, but Benny just snapped his fingers again. “Scram. Beat it. Go be useful somewhere else.” He hissed out.

“Alright, fine. You’ve got my undivided attention, see? No backup. Just you and me. What sort of negotiation are you lookin’ for exactly?”

She grinned slightly as he begrudgingly shoed his men away, now she could really stop wasting time.

“Did I ever mention a negotiation? All I said was I wanted to talk to you alone.” She said, leaning In conspiratorially “I just wanted to make sure I got to stab you first before your men blow my head off.” She said, tilting her hand slightly.

The dim casino lights caught a shiny object sticking slightly out of her worn cardigan sleeve “you yell, you make any sudden moves or god forbid you say some stupid bullshit—I will jam this so far into your neck that it’ll come out the other side.” She said, her eyes boring holes into him as she made sure to keep it well enough out of sight from others.

“So, I think we should take a little walk.” She said, raising her brows slightly and gesturing over to a long hallway by nodding her head in its direction “I think it’s about time you start doing what I ask before you get hurt. Sure, your men can pump me full of all the iron they own, but you’ll be dead before that—we’ll both go down.” She said, her voice even like she’d rehearsed this several times before.

Sure living with a hole in the side of her head took some getting used to, but honestly she was grateful she was even alive no matter how much she did complain about it. In her mind, the only logical answer was to go after the bastard and give him a taste of his own medicine if not worse. The Wasteland had changed her for the worst—almost as if drawing out the inner turmoil that she usually managed to keep well hidden.

She stared at the tall building, her eyes scanning the signage. “The tops” was written on the very front. It was almost too easy. She considered walking In like she owned the place, but she decided right now wasn’t exactly the time to be flashy if she wanted to get a decent ways into the casino and find Benny. She went in, her eyes immediately landing on a man with light brown hair that was asking her to hand over her weapons. She figured as much.

She handed over her alarming amount of weapons and ammo, although of course she kept a couple hold outs. She didn’t exactly expect to be able to get too close to the guy. Once that was done, she wasted no time stepping into the casino and glancing around as if she was looking for him. Of course she was. She looked unassuming enough—besides all of the guns she’d given up, except there was an undeniable hint of anger present in her gaze.

Just as she was about to turn her eyes landed on something familiar. A black and white checkered suit. She had to resist the urge to pull out the knife she had stored away on her, it felt near impossible for her fingers not to itch for it. She was unfamiliar with her hands being empty for once, but despite her lack of weaponry she turned to look right at him. Even though he was across the room, the air was already heavy with the weight of what she knew she came here to do.

She’d thought about this very moment so many times before—but it was only now that she was realizing it wouldn’t play out like in the movies. They wouldn’t be alone, and there certainly wouldn’t be any gunfire from her like she’d expected. It was between her, the man across the room from her and the knife concealed on her person.

Benny swallowed, tugging at his collar and bringing his cigarette back to his lips. Suddenly his suit felt like it was two sizes too tight. Maybe..maybe he could talk her down, shit, he could certainly try at least. He’d sweet talked his way out of worse. What was one courier? And he had his bodyguards if things went out the window. So what was he so worried about?

He turned, accidentally making eye contact for a sharp moment before turning again, pretending that he hadn’t seen her.

“Your name suits you.” She finally spoke, it was calculated, thought out. “Benny,” she said, almost as if she was testing how his name felt on her tongue “Sounds like it would belong to a guy like you.” She said, her voice pointed. “You didn’t expect me to just…come back from the dead, now did you?” She asked, her hand slowly and definitely not at all suspiciously reaching for something in her back pocket.

She pulled something , quick enough that he only had a few mere seconds to react. A chip. “Were you looking for this at some point?” She asked, raising a brow before smirking slightly “because I know another guy who would potentially be very interested in this.” She said, a sigh escaping her. “It’s a good thing he happens to have a lot of reinforcement.” There was no way she would actually give the Platinum chip to Mr. House—but it sure served as a good bargaining chip.
