I want to take a second to talk about this moment because there has been some discussion on Diego pointing out that Lila doesn't like bracelets, as if a bracelet wasn't a major plot point in their relationship for 2 seasons. I understand the gripes with this, as it feels a little sloppy, but I feel like it was meant to highlight Diego's disconnect with Lila at this time... or at least in their marriage. First of all, let's recognize that Diego is actually incredibly perceptive. His instincts tell him to pay attention and take notice and each time he does he is right in doing so. However, his folly is that he just slightly misses the mark. So he pays attention to the fact that she traded in the gifted bracelet for a vacuum and believes this means she must HATE bracelets. All bracelets! Is that the obvious conclusion? To me, that feels as silly as if he came to the conclusion that she prefers vacuums to jewelry, that she must really LOVE vacuums. Now, why might a woman trade a bracelet for a vacuum? Perhaps she's been asking for a new vacuum for months? Perhaps their vacuum just broke, they are struggling financially (judging by their vehicle this is very likely), and she couldn't stomach him spending such a large amount on something just for her when they need things for the family? Where I live Dyson vacuums are quite expensive. They usually sell for $500-$600. To trade in the bracelet for a vacuum implies that the bracelet was also quite expensive. It's not like she traded the bracelet for a pair of earrings or a necklace or a fancy pair of shoes. She traded a frivolous (although kind) purchase for a practical one. So when Diego points out that she hates bracelets, Lila actually seems confused by this, responding bluntly that she doesn't. After his explaination, you see both Lila and Five register the same thought, mimicking each other with a head nod and pursed smile, that Diego doesn't really know his wife at all. Lila with the somber air of a person who is used to having her needs overlooked, and Five with that smug "what an idiot" smirk.

This obviously is symbolic of them developing feelings for one another despite their initial thinly-veiled “white-hot hatred” in previous seasons but also fits seamlessly as a puzzle piece into a greater metanarrative about international politics, global powers, and the perils of monoculture/ethno-nationalism, which is a major underlying thread of the entire series, but i will hopefully find the wherewithal to elaborate on that whole can of worms in another post bc it demands a more conscientious analysis than just “awe look how he already lowkey fell in love with her” as an entry point lmao…
