Work Text:
The morning sun seeped into the empty autumn classroom. The warm haze spreaded across the brown wood of the table and chairs, complementing its natural tone as specks of dust quietly danced in and out of the sunbeams. The stillness of the air was not suffocating but comfortable as if locked in time in its serene beauty.
The calm ambience was quickly broken when the wooden door to the classroom opened. A girl with a lean frame and sharp, angular facial features stepped into the classroom. Her sleek navy hair trailed behind her as if loyally following her as she stepped through the door and into the silent classroom. Her equally dark blue eyes scanned the room she was in, and gave a small smirk to herself when she saw that the room was empty.
Rin walked over to her allocated seat and placed her bag on her chair as she started to take her books and stationery out of it. She was always satisfied with herself when she was the first one to arrive in the classroom. The warm sun shone on parts of her moving pale skin as she moved her upper body to take things out of her bag and place them on her desk.
When the high school senior was finally done removing, sorting and arranging all her books and stationery on her desk, she sat down and started to flip through a textbook to commence studying while waiting for her other classmates to show up and for the first bell to ring. Even though she was 30 minutes early, she used whatever time to revise her coursework - she was the class president and top scorer in her grade, after all.
Finally, after what seemed like a decent period of time, the wooden door slid open again and her classmates started trickling into the room. They all greeted her as they walked past her to get to their own allocated desk.
“Morning, Miss class president”
“Morning, Rin!”
Rin would briefly look up with her gleaned eyes and give a curt nod in their direction each time.
“Morning.” Would be all that she would respond back. Nothing more than their face would register within her mind as it was not her priority to make small talk or be intimate with their personal lives.
She would quickly go back to her studies and not continue the conversation. Most students in her class are used to this interaction, and would say nothing or mind as they continue their morning routine of preparing their books for the day. Her eyes would scan over the course material with great precision as she mindlessly ignored the increasing chatter around her. Her ambition to get into the best Japanese university was always at the forefront of her mind, and it had tripled in flaming passion since she started her final year of high school.
Her parents were CEOs of a large business corporation that played an integral part in the Japanese economy. Since she was young, her parents always drilled in her mind that she was going to be the successor of their business and hence they want her to enrol in the best institutes in the country in order to show the public their offspring is worthy to have the business passed onto them instead of some greedy corporate businessmen.
The pressure to succeed had not been too harsh on her mentality throughout her schooling life (at least that was what Rin thought), but she did not dare dwell on the idea of not doing well on her exams and schoolwork.
She had a reputation to uphold, after all.
Rin’s ears perked up at the wooden door opening once again, however her subconscious alerted her to look up to see who entered the door as the speed and strength that the door was pulled open was very familiar and ingrained in Rin’s mind.
In came a student with short hazelnut hair and aura that expelled she was not to be messed with. Her indifferent brown eyes scanned the room and landed on Rin. A similar smirk extended on her lips as she recognised her friend. Yumi sauntered her way to Rin’s desk with several textbooks opened on different pages. The two students stared at each other for a while longer with a comfortable pause.
“Yo.” Yumi nudged her chin upwards as a greeting, bored eyes never leaving Rin.
“Morning.” Rin replied with a nod, a small smile gracing her lips.
Yumi’s chocolate eyes shifted to the books and pens on the table. Nothing in her expression gave away her thoughts, but she commented, “It’s only the second week of the term and you look like you are studying for finals week.”
“You can never be too prepared for upcoming quizzes.” Rin said bluntly but not in a sour tone.
Rin had known Yumi since she could remember. They were childhood friends since their parents were close business partners and knew each other very well, and thus they saw each other quite often and were always by each other’s side throughout their schooling life.
Yumi flung herself to sit on top of the desk next to hers, even though it was not her allocated desk. She gave a long sigh and looked to the ceiling, annoyance evident on her face.
“Urgh, you never gonna believe what my dad said to me this morning.”
“What did he say?” Rin asked in a mildly monotone voice, clearly sounding not interested in what her friend had to say and wanted to get back to finishing her biology chapter.
Yumi looked back down to Rin and rolled her eyes. “He said if my grades kept being the way it was, he is going to send me to cram school to help me get into a good university.”
Rin finally showed some expression on her face by raising an eyebrow. “I think ‘help’ is an overstatement. ‘A miracle’ would be a better term.”
“Oi!” Yumi snapped back, her brown narrow eyes flared in frustration at the comment. “Just because I am not in the top 10 of the grade, doesn’t mean I am not trying.”
“I am not saying you weren’t. I am saying to even get into The University of Tokyo, you would have to at least be in the top 5 of the grade.” Rin’s attention reverted back to her work, clearly not planning to entertain this conversation any longer than necessary.
“I don’t even want to go there. My stupid parents want me to go there so that I can help run their company some day.” Yumi sighed in resignation and crossed her arms.
Rin decided to not comment on her response, and proceeded to focus on her school work. Her blatantly disregard was quickly dismissed when the first school bell rang, signalling the start of the school day. She quickly and efficiently closed her school books and organised them into their designated piles. The class quickly reorganised themselves into their allocated seats and became silent as their homeroom teacher opened the door and entered the classroom.
Upon noticing this, Rin immediately snapped to attention and promptly shouted, “Class, stand up!”
At once, the whole room stood up from their seats in attention and in an unified voice called, “Good morning, Masako sensei!”
Masako sensei looked at the whole classroom and smiled warmly as she made her way over to the teacher’s desk. After she quickly placed her books and items down that were in her arms, she looked back at the class and said happily, “Good morning everyone! Happy Monday and please return to your seats.”
All the students sat back quietly after the greeting, while Rin continued to stand up. She soon moved herself out from her desk and promptly made her way towards the front of the classroom. Masako sensei saw the top student approaching the front and flashed her another smile. Rin gave a quick nod as she finally made her way to the front.
Masako sensei made quick work of what to tell the class next. “Listen up, everyone! It’s time for the school update by our class president, Rin.”
Every Monday morning is the same; Rin got up to the front of the class to read out any new updates the school or student council board had decided from the previous week. And as the chairman of the student council body, Rin made sure all events were on notified to her class and announced on time.
Nothing was to be delayed under her watch.
As she stood in front of the class and faced the students, her cool azure eyes gleaned over the students who were waiting for her to do her weekly announcements. She gave an internal nod of satisfaction when she saw that everyone was paying attention to her to convey the news.
“All right everyone, the first big school update is-”
At the moment, the door to the classroom swung open and broke the silence in the classroom. Irritation flooded Rin as one of her biggest pet peeves was getting interrupted when she was in the middle of speaking.
Her furious eyes shot over to the intruder at the door frame, but as her eyes adjusted to the shadow, she saw a student with equally sharp yellow eyes and long, spiky silver hair. Her glare kept steady on the student who wore a constant mad face, who then turned to look at the other students and teacher. His hard features softened when he realised all the students were staring at him.
“…sorry.” He grumbled out a soft apology to nobody in particular and sauntered over to his empty desk. Rin’s angry eyes followed the brooding figure with distain, cursing the world as to why he had to enter the class just when she was about to start talking.
“Garou, it’s nice for you to actually show up at the start of a Monday.” Masako sensei finally broke the awkward silence with her cheerful nature. Her soft personality makes even the toughest students listen to what she has to say.
All Garou did was give a quick hmph back, and Rin decided his abrupt presence was not worth any more cognitive space in her mind and proceeded to talk in her usual sharp voice that cut through to all corners of the classroom.
“Alright, before I was rudely interrupted, I was about to announce that the school sports festival is only two months away. This means that preparations by the student council and school faculty have commenced. We all want to have our final year end on a high especially with the fireworks show at the end of the festival, so I promptly suggest that you all start thinking about what kind of stalls you want to contribute to. Fundraising will begin right away as we are in the right period for the community to help donate for sports day. The student council has begun organising charity events to help raise this year’s sports festival, and our events planner will send out an update once the schedule has been finalised.”
Quiet chatter and soft groans drifted around the classroom, as the students disliked the fundraising part of sports day. They were going to be asked to go into groups in a few weeks to participate in small fundraising events in the public to help get donations for the event. Plus the fact they were all in their final year which meant they were responsible for looking after their junior class men during those boring charity drives.
“Lastly.” Rin’s hard voice broke the murmur like a lethal sword through paper, and silence swiftly ensued once again.
“This is our last year, meaning final exams are approaching us quicker than ever. Please be prepared to study extra hard this year, as we all try to reach our target tertiary education institute. Thank you for listening.”
Rin gave a quick but low bow, and made her way back to her desk. She ignored the growing chatter around the room as it was not her duty then to keep the class in order. Conversations of the sports festival, final exams, and even about weekend activities dimly buzzed around her but she quickly shut them out when she saw who was sitting near her desk.
Or more so, who was sitting behind her desk.
As she approached her table, hard admiral eyes clashed with gleaming yellow ones as Garou coldly stared at her as she approached her usual spot. It was a battle of indifference and stubbornness when Rin arrived at her seat, and she paused before she sat down and sent a nod towards the late student who sat at the desk behind her.
“Garou.” Her cold words were curt with no breath wasted in the short exchange. Her parents taught her to be polite wherever she went, and that meant even greeting somebody that was like dirt under her fingernails.
She did not even bother to wait for a response before she sat down, nor did she care if he did respond. Rin quickly turned her attention to take out her workbooks for the first subject period. Her momentary period of peace and routine was disdainfully interrupted when a gruff voice from behind her broke into her ear drums.
“Why don’tcha pay for the stupid circus show yourself.”
A nerve in her temple twitched with pure annoyance as her brain comprehended the snide remark. Her whole body screamed at her to ignore the idiot behind her, but her stubborn brain overrode her pride to make sure she had the last word in this stupid interaction.
She shot around and glared daggers at the unbothered student who carelessly decided he was going to ruin her day by just his existence. Sharp blue eyes pierced equally ferocious golden ones as the silence between them tenfold with suffocating hatred. A stare of wits and determination blossomed between the teacher’s pet and troublemaker, and the two students aimed to bring the other person down to where they belong.
“Excuse me?” Rin’s tone was dangerous and low, and any student or teacher would fear to be at the receiving end of her fierce personality.
Garou bared his teeth in a twisted smile, leering her to do her worst. “You heard me. Doesn’t your student council have enough budget for this bullshit? You were yapping last week about how you made the school get the most amount of profit last year.”
She narrowed her eyes in hatred and at how indifferent his defiance against her was. A small part in her brain was surprised when she registered the fact Garou was actually listening to her student council update last week, however she fiercely shot that thought down with frigid stubbornness. Rin was speechless at how this nobody did not know his place in her world, and that irks her soul to her deathbed.
Rin took a deep breath and remembered her teachings from when she was training to be class president and when she was applying to become chairman in the student council. She attempted to find her inner zen - an important skill when dealing with… hard to deal with personnel. When she found her tiny yet present internal peace, she breathed out and looked at the muscular yet lean teen with new determination.
“This school event is focused on community participation and donations. None of the money we earn for this festival goes to the student council and it all goes towards the sports day funding.”
Garou did not respond, as if finally understanding in resignation. Rin knew she had triumphed over him in that moment, and felt the need to stroke her pride some more by smugly adding, “Speaking of student council, we were reviewing students who had a high absence rate last term, and not surprisingly … your name showed up.”
Rin turned her lips into a small smirk. “The teachers say your grades are a sight for sore eyes. You need to bring your game up if you want to graduate on time, Garou.”
Expecting herself to win with a clear indication, Rin was once again too busy congratulating herself to notice an unreadable yet dark emotion that temporarily flashed within Garou’s gaze. When she looked back, she was shocked that Garou did not leave it or cower in defeat after that taunt. Instead, his grin grew in size and a nasty spark blazed in his eyes. He leaned in suddenly but Rin made no indication of flinching. Their heated glare with each other seared into their souls, but not wanting to be outwitted by the other.
“Oh,” Garou sneered, “I didn’t know you all were so obsessed with my whereabouts. Next time, just ask me to schedule a date, won’t you?”
The absolute nerve of this guy!
Rin’s eyes slightly widened in horror and disgust at the taunt. Her mind froze with disbelief and had no idea how to respond to the outrageous statement, or even to entertain it. The nerve of him even suggesting he has any suitors made her want to vomit right onto his table.
“How dare you…” Rin started as her eyes darkened at a dangerous level, anger emitting from her aura.
“You know it’s true.” The silver-haired teen was utterly unfazed by the fury seeping from the class president in front of him.
“In what world could that be remotely true?!”
The tension between Rin and Garou crackled like static electricity, their words honed to perfection, cutting through the air with precision. Lost in their verbal duel, time slipped away unnoticed until a subtle clearing of the throat pierced through their verbal sparring. Rin's blazing sapphire eyes widened abruptly as she belatedly grasped the presence of their first-period teacher.
"Class stand!" Her command sliced through the lingering tension, her voice sharp and authoritative, betraying none of the embarrassment that now painted her cheeks crimson. The realization of her oversight washed over her like a chilling wave, drowning her momentarily in horror at her lapse in attention.
Anger smouldered within her, a fiery ember fueled by self-directed frustration at failing to uphold her duties flawlessly. As she hastily gathered her chemistry books, a surge of resentment towards Garou surged within her, his presence an unwelcome reminder of the disruption he had caused.
Internally seething with indignation, Rin's gaze bore into Garou with an intensity that matched the blaze of emotions raging within her. In that moment of humiliation and anger, she silently shifted the weight of blame onto him, allowing the flames of her ire to consume any remnants of self-doubt or vulnerability.
