Hey
I felt bad about people who followed me for writing and art and just get me yelling so I made a rant account
My main is @livingdatura , follow that if you want stuff I'm actually proud of
If i ever stop posting for a wide bit of time, know I'm not dead, I just can't think of anything to say
Dusting off the rant account hello
I just saw a post of someone getting mad at an Odysseus ask blog because they joked about mpreg
Straight up telling them to kill themself
And. You do know you're on tumblr, right? The website where weird kinks shine?
Also. The Epic fandom constantly jokes about Odysseus being pregnant and giving birth, especially on tumblr.
If you're not comfortable with it, why are you still here??
Also, I genuinely don't trust people who hate mpreg like this, because it feels borderline transphobic, but that's a rant for another day
Fun fact totally not related to recent events: I have had a script ready for a Epic the Musical video ready for months, and felt kind of bad over how critical I was in it.
I don't feel as bad anymore
This isn't me trying to start shit, this is more just me being..confused?
Has anybody else on here seen the abuse allegations against Jorge? And if yes, why is nobody talking about them?
I've only seen a few people talk about them (and one of them was in the discord server, which got them warned, what else is new), and just..why is nobody talking about them??
To preface, I don't use Twitter anymore, so I don't have the link to the original post, nor do I know of it's even up anymore
EDIT: FOR PEOPLE WHO DONR KNOW SOMEONE MADE A VIDEO ABOUT IT !! https://youtu.be/e26N5MZs4rI?si=FOS-w1U8TlRmsfeI
I'm back hi
One of the things that pisses me off the most in the Epic fandom, has nothing to do with the hate itself, but the reactions to it.
If you're on the Epic the musical side of tiktok, then you know about those white as fucking paper individuals who claim to want to "make the Epic fandom a better place", but they never talk about the actual issues in the fandom.
You know, the RAMPANT RACISM.
And they know they can't talk about it, so they just say that God damn high school pep rally bullshit to try and get people to listen.
WHICH HAS NEVER AND WILL NEVER FUCKING WORK.
BECAUSE YOU HAVE NO AUTHORITY IN THIS FANDOM.
At most, Jorge and the Epic cast will be the people that the fandom will listen to. And while the cast speaks out about issues sometimes (if it effects their current careers like Mico telling people to not suggest epic songs at his shows), Jorge never says a word.
Not about the Calypso discourse, not about artists getting harassed, not about people being racist, nothing.
And i get he's working on a new musical, but this is your fanbase. A fanbase that not a lot of people trust or like. Because you never talk to them about what's right and wrong.
Just. GRGRGRGEHSJJSJSSH.
Odysseus is canonically a crier. my fav part of the odyssey is that this very masculine man is not afraid to burst into tears at any moment
On Calypso's Island- [Odysseus] was sitting disconsolate on the shore in his accustomed place, tormenting himself with tears and sighs and heartache, and looking out across the barren sea with streaming eyes. (V.80-90)
When hearing a bard sing about Troy- Odysseus' heart was melting with grief and his cheeks were wet with the tears than ran from his eyes. He wept as a woman weeps (VIII.520-530)
When seeing Elpenor (his dead crewmate) in the underworld- Now, when I saw him, tears started to my eyes and I was stirred with pity for him (XI.50-60)
When seeing his mother in the underworld- My eyes filled with tears when I saw her there (XI.80-90)
Reuniting with Telemachus- And now a passionate longing for tears arose in them both and they cried aloud piercingly and more convulsively than birds of prey [...] So did these two let the piteous tears run streaming from their eyes. And sunset would have found them still weeping, If Telemachus had not suddenly asked his father a question. (XVI.210-220)
Reuniting with Penelope- Her words stirred a great longing for tears in Odysseus' heart, and he wept as he held his dear and loyal wife in his arms. (XXIII.230-240)
theres more (pretty sure he cries when returning to Ithica and when seeing Argus, too) but this is a quick list of all the ones I could find in five minutes.
Here's something I said on tiktok because I like being annoying/j
(Context, the post was about hot takes about musicals)
(Cut off: "The music and voices are the saving grace of it. The story is an insult.")
At this point im expecting someone in this fandom to make a "if Argos was in God Games!!" video oh my god.
Looking into musicals in Broadway or the West end makes you realize
Wow..epics writing is bad/J
Because, those musicals are full of original music and lyrics, going back to other songs as a reprise near the end of the musical
Compared to epic, where almost every song is a call back.
Like. Holy shit.
This is such a fucking random tangent but
I feel like there's enough evidence (in both the Homeric odyssey and in Epic) to show that Odysseus was some form of demisexual
Okay, definition of demisexual is " a sexual orientation in which a person feels sexually attracted to someone only after they've developed a close emotional bond with them "
And, in both the Odyssey and in Epic, we see just that with Odysseus. Both times he ends up in bed with a woman that was not his wife, it was not with his consent.
There isn't really any evidence he even had any attraction to these women, at most There's Odysseus calling Calypso beautiful when speaking with the Phaeacian council, but that can be connected to the abuse he went through from her.
And, keep in mind that queer identities are not a new thing. They've existed for as long as humans have, maybe even longer. And queer characters in mythology do exist, Achilles and Patroclus for example.
Also, one more thing, this is not me trying to say you can only ship Odysseus with Penelope. Quite the opposite, actually. I feel like ships with him work better if they know each other, not like a one night stand situation, y'know?
It is genuinely so pathetic to me how some people won't let themselves have fun in this fandom
Like, no one cares that Odysseus and Eurylochus were canonically married. Take the stick out of your ass and have fun every once in a while.
You're not better than everybody else for shipping odypen or eurymene. Get over yourself.
I will still never understand why Epic changed Calypso from being a rapist and made Antinous one
Like, my only guess is that they didn't want to seem sexist? Or that they hated women?
Which, confuses me if that's the case. Because, Circe does some evil shit, and that's okay. Because it's fiction. (He also removed the sa there as well??)
But then, the Ithaca saga, just?? Why is one of the most queer coded men in the entire odyssey suddenly wanting to rape/or even fuck a woman for that matter??
Just for context, Antinous never once in the odyssey, talks about wanting Penelope. He was only there in the palace because he wanted power. And that makes him terrible. He also planned to kill Telemachus, that's still canon.
SO WHERE THE FUCK DID THE RAPE COME FROM??
One of the worst lines in Epic (which there aren't a lot but when they're bad there bad) is when Athena says "I've no respect for bullies" in Little Wolf
Bullies. BULLIES.
SHE IS CALLING THESE 20-50 YEAR OLD MEN BULLIES LIKE WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
HOW DID JORGE WRITE THAT LINE, HAVE TEAGAN SING IT, EDIT IT ALL TOGETHER AND RELEASE IT AND THING THAT IT WAS A GOOD LINE.
Here's something I've been thinking about a lot
!! CW: DISCUSSION OF SUICIDE + NTN SPOILERS !!
"There is a world" from Next to Normal is what the end of "Get in the water" wanted to be.
First of all, this is not a hate post again Jorge or his writing, nor is it saying that one musical is better then another. This is just something I've noticed.
Now, what do I mean by this?
Think about there is a world. This song has a hallucination convincing someone to let go. To kill themselves. And what does the end of Get in the water have? Hallucinations convincing someone to let go. To stop breathing.
Why does one work better then the other? The emotion. In my personal opinion, I don't find the end of get in the water sad or emotional. Comparing that to there is a world, I sobbed like a baby at that song.
I don't know if saying "we don't know the characters well" is a good argument. Gabe died years before the musicals story even starts. Compared to epic, we knew Polites, and yet I still didn't care for him.
I honestly think it's a character writing issue. Polites isn't given enough character/personality before he dies, so he just feels kind of boring.
We know why we should care about Gabe. Even by that point.
There's just so much more emotion in there is a world.
Here's a hot take
The only interesting part of song of Achilles is Achilles keeping a corpse in his bed
The rest of it is so painfully boring I almost regret getting a physical copy
This has been something I've been thinking about for awhile now
Y'know those Hermes and Tiresias skits?
They've been making me progressively uncomfortable because most of the jokes are just "blind people are funny"
I understand that's not all of the jokes, and no I'm not saying that Troy and Mason hate blind people.
It's more just. I hate how often that joke is used both in those videos, and in the fandom
It just feels icky, y'know?
